Looking for a great Christmas gift for your whiz kid? Here’s a great DIY that shows you how to make a solar powered ball robot. Of course, there exactly isn’t a kit for this but all the parts are easily findable so it might actually work better than any other gift you can buy off the shelf.

This technology of using minimal electronics and simple mechanical design is call BEAM robotics.

The Miniball itself was originally invented by Richard Weait of North York, Toronto.The Miniball is a amazing robot – it uses a simple circuit and the robot itself proves to be very capable, rarely getting stuck. The Miniball is mechanically complex and electronically simple. (But don’t worry – the mechanical part is still pretty easy)

In this case, we aren’t going to build the original Miniball, but a smaller, more basic wannabe version. This robot is extremely simple and can take a beginner less than 2 hours to build.

It’s the holidays season coming up soon, specifically Thanksgivings where most of you will get 5 or more days off work and visit your parents/family. Well, for that, there’s a perfect gift, a digital photo frame.

Not all digital photo frames are made the same though. Especially for your elders who have less knowledge of computers, you might want to consider getting them a wireless digital photo frame.

Why?

Because the with WiFi digital photo frames you can easily stream them your latest photos via services like Flickr or Picasa. This also is great since they can see your latest photos without fiddling with memory cards, USB connections, and whatnot.

I also tend to like to listen to a lot of free internet radio, so I added internet radio as a requirement here also.

The HP DreamScreen and Intouch UT7150 digital photo frames are probably the best on the market right now that can do both WiFi and internet radio.

Plus, a digital photo frame is even better when you can easily scan through the photos and videos. These two digital frames both come with either touch-controls on the front (for HP) and touchscreen controls.

I find that having touch/touchscreen controls very important for browsing through the photos. Plus, these digital frames allow you to do some more stuff like connect to Facebook or check the news from your favorite blogs without a real computer/laptop on your hand.

Of course, you will need a live internet connection to make these digital frames perform to its fullest so make sure your parents/family have one.

And don’t forget to set it up all the WiFi connections and photo streaming for your parents. You should be able to set it and forget it.

Both HP DreamScreen and the Intouch UT7150 are in the similar price range, I prefer the Intouch one since it’s a full touchscreen while the HP has much bigger screen.

This is a nice lamp that can literally go anywhere because it is battery powered so that is one good point.

Another interesting feature here is the fact that the fibres are black and the light appearing at the end of each piece of fibre is a very nice dark blue.

This could of course make a really interesting xmas tree, just though that I would point that out as there are only just over fifty days to go!

I have always been amazed at the price drops of laptops every year and that’s why I never spend more than $700 on a new laptop because I can get a decent one every year instead of being stuck with a $2000 laptop for 2-3 years.

Anyways, this post isn’t about how to buy a laptop but that spy camera prices have dropped drastically. This cool spy camera pen sells for ONLY $26.45 at Amazon. That is unbelievable because I know this type of product cost easily $300-400 just couple years ago nevermind it wasn’t easy to get.

The Spy Camera comes with 4 gigs of storage, emergency charger, and can record 640×480 pixels of video. There’s no specs on how long the videos can be recorded but I imagine it’d be around 1-2 hours at that resolution, still not bad considering the price and functionality of the spy camera pen.

This spy camera can be perfect for protecting yourself against bad cops or just for spying on your competition. Already I can think of dozen ideas to utilize this $26.45 spy camera, you should get one and play with it.

Bamboo has been undeniably the most eco-friendly choice for wooden products today. According to Wikipedia, bamboo is the “fastest” growing wooden plant in the world today.

Of course, I have seen many many bamboo plants/trees in South Korea and other parts of Asia but is probably lacking here in San Francisco bay area. (I have yet to see a single naturally grown bamboo plant…)

If you are luck enough to live in the parts of the world where bamboo grows everywhere, please do make use of this awesome DIY and make yourself a cool fruit bowl. Put some real fruit and give it to your elderly parents who will appreciate your hard DIY work and the fruits too of course.

This beautiful bowl is made of 20 layers of laser-cut bamboo tied together with copper wire.

I am posting it as an entry for the “Epilog Challenge”. It is a “green” product in that the design makes minimal use of materials.

Easter is right around the corner and here’s a cool DIY that shows you how to make fiber easter eggs. It might be a fun project for those of you trying to be even more creative this Easter holidays.

The concept behind felting is pretty simple–when wool fiber is introduced to hot water, soap, and some friction, the scales of the fiber tack to one another and the result is a compressed mass of the fiber. It’s similar to what happens when a wool sweater meets the hot washing machine.

Here’s a great way to re-use and re-make your old CDs into a fully, functional discoball. (Why didn’t I think of this before?)

The steps are pretty simple as you can see in these pics:

1) Cut up the CDs into small pieces.

2) Get a nice styrofoam ball for the discoball itself.

3) Glue the pieces on!

There, that is so simple and a great idea for making a bunch of discoballs for your next house party. Of course, you will need to also attach a sturdy string to hang it somewhere and let it “twirrrrrrl”.

Cool stuff.

I am not buddhist but my girlfriend is and I had the chance to go to a Thai Temple here in SF Bay Area. Of course, you are supposed to give the monks a gift basket, filled with stuff they would need such as fruits, shaver, toothpaste, etc…etc…

Well, I just happened to see a cool DIY on how to make these cool fruit baskets out of newspaper, maybe I will make one for my girlfriend who can then give it to the monks and keep our karma happy.

I’d have to say this is one of the coolest toys I’ve seen in awhile. It’s a lego-like pieces that can be assembled together and it requires NO BATTERY! The Topobo runs on some sorta kinetic motors, meaning it’s great for kids to learn movement without use of any electricity.

That’s right, no batteries are required to make these toys move, as the Topodo comes with a special set of kinetic memory motors. They work by having the user moving the limbs or body parts, and these special parts will reproduce the action, enabling creations to walk across the floor without power.
