Money Hack – How to Deal with Debt Settlement Services!

Frankly, I used to be very broke about 2 years ago when I was barely trying to be independent with my blogging business. Gladly, I never had to get a job after I got to a point where I was making enough money with blogging. Well, during those times, literally hundreds of debt resolution services called me on a daily basis. I always turned them down because what they “don’t” tell you is that having your debts settled with the credit card companies WILL LOWER YOUR CREDIT SCORE.

Of course, if you owe like more than $100,000 AND you have no way of paying them back EVER AND your interests are higher than $1000 a month, THEN you might want to really settle your debt by yourself (remember, credit card companies are always willing to negotiate if you talk to the managers, especially if you tell them there’s no way you can pay them back) or use one of the debt settlement services.

My credit score is still bad because I had about 6 months of straight late payments or no-payments due to the fact that I was trying to barely get by month to month but in the end, I found a way to pay them back. (and I am STILL paying) I won’t regret my decision though, freedom I have now for that risk is greater than any money can pay for, blogging for a living.

Anyways, there’s also a good book Debt Cures you can read up on that shows you how to negotiate with credit card companies yourself, lower your APRs, and more.

Remember, credit cards are great to use to build your credit. I am not saying not to use your credit cards, just keep a good balance check on a weekly basis so you are only spending as much as you can pay.

Car dealers/salesmen have been touted as one of the worst people in the world for ripping off consumers. It’s true, even today, car buying process in America isn’t easy as paying for the retail sticker, you must haggle, haggle, and haggle.

Well, I just came across the “secrets” of car negotiation that could possibly make you a better negotiator the next time you shop for cars.

Salesman: So let me ask you this, Oren. I know you’re a businessman, and we’re both real busy. So if I were to offer you the car at $47,900, would that work?
Weintraub: I would say that if you can do $44K on the car, we would probably have a deal. But I don’t want to present it to him unless it’s a real offer.
Salesman: OK. I’ll see if I can make that deal happen. One more question: Are you in the market for any other vehicles at this time?
Weintraub: What you do right now could lead to more business for you. If we find the people we’re dealing with to be professional and tenacious about price, we’ll send you more business.
Salesman: I’ll call you right back.

Notice also that Weintraub reviewed the specifications on the car: It’s a 2005, certified with 29,000 miles on it. It’s essential to establish — and then confirm — the details of the car you are buying. Year, make, model, number of miles, condition level and warranty details all affect the value of the car.

After a few more rounds of car negotiating, Weintraub got the price of the Mercedes, which was originally on sale for $49,995, down to $45,500. His client bought the car.

Recession DIY – How to Watch Fireworks on a Budget this July 4th, Independence Day!

July 4th Independence Day is one of my favorite days as I do highly enjoy celebrating my freedom as an independent person who doesn’t depend on his parents to make a living. I’ve been such a July 4th nut and I have been going to every firework in San Francisco last couple years but this year, I’ve decided to save money and watch the fireworks.

So, here’s how to save money during one of the biggest holidays in America:

1. Don’t go out to see the fireworks, stay home! If you are going to go out clubbing on July 4th or even to a bar, don’t expect to pay less than $40 to get into any bar. This will add up and you will probably end up spending hundreds of dollars, especially if you go out with bunch of close friends and buy drinks for them all night long. I took this route couple years ago but it ain’t the smartest choice as I spent about $200 easy on this night when everything was super expensive.

Besides spending so much money on bars and liquor, you might regret waking up next day, only to find out there’s another stranger on your bed. (hopefully good lookin’ and fine plz)

If you must go, please make sure you find a good party spot where you can actually see the fireworks and pay in advance. (usually you will get discounts on paying early for special events)

2. Now, if you somehow got yourself to not go out like me, you will save a bunch of money. But how to see the fireworks? Heck, you don’t have to see the fireworks in real life, just watch your nice HD LCD TV and drink beers or wine at home. (That $200 you didn’t spend at the bars will go a LONG ways for a nice bottle of Hennessey or whatever.)

3. If there’s a China town around, go there and buy some cheap fireworks that you can light off in your home or around where you live.

4. Again, this DIY is for those people on a budget, who’s barely surviving the recession. If you must go out, do so but do remember what you spend on Independence Day could take a big bite out of your lifestyle over the next few weeks. If you are willing to live on McDonald’s $1 burgers, by all means go ahead but I rather put that money to some good liquor than overspending at your local pub, which the bartenders don’t really deserve anyways. (it’s just a hallucination that your brain feels happier and pays more…)

The recession economy is increasing auto insurance fraud like no other in history. According to Autoblog,

Despondent over being financially strapped and unable to cover car payments, vehicle owners are ditching, sinking, or torching their vehicles and reporting the loss to collect insurance payoffs.

It is definitely a shame to see honest citizens affected by the economy and end up burning their cars.

My honest advice is to really get a grip on your life before you attempt to recover money from insurance companies. Life isn’t supposed to be easy but there’s always going to be solutions to problems if you keep looking.

Autoblog also says you can “re-negotiate” your current plans before deciding to burn your car and end up in jail:

A better solution for cash-strapped owners, say experts, is to attempt to renegotiate payments, sell the car, or trade it in for a less expensive model. While you generally won’t come out ahead, those transactions are legal and they’ll keep you out of the slammer.

I actually know someone who does insurance fraud stuff on consistent basis. Just remember, “what you do will come back to you ten fold whether that’s good or bad.”

Everytime I goto the Apple Store in San Francisco, I am amazed at how quickly you can check out without a receipt, the receipt actually can be sent to my e-mail box, which I can confirm in real-time using my Blackberry GMail app.

Apart from the Apple Store, I don’t see that many other retailers using paperless receipts, perhaps it’s ahead of its time.

Best Receipt Scanner Review!

Bally Fitness (BallyFitness.com) – The Worst Fitness Center Ever!

I have been going to Bally’s Fitness Center in San Francisco on Alemany for past 6 months or so and I have to say it’s a great gym until about 3 months ago when my fitness trainer left.

Usually, I don’t do posts like this but since my “money” was “had” by Bally Fitness I will have to rant about it right here on my blog. Of course, I have heard tons of horror stories about fitness centers taking advantage of customers but here’s my horror story:

1. I signed up with Chris, who is a personal trainer at Bally’s Fitness Center about 6 months ago for 8 sessions of 30 minutes each. (About $300 total)

2. On my 3rd session, Chris did not show up. I left Chris a message to meet me next week and it wasn’t a big deal. The next week, I showed up at the gym to find Chris there, except he’s working with another person!

3. When I approached Chris, he said he’s leaving the company and that he will get some “other” personal trainer to call me. (No mention that my money should be refunded.)

4. About 2 month past and no phone calls from either Chris or anyone from Bally Fitness.

5. So I talk to the “supposed” manager there Rein, and I told him I would rather have my remaining 6 sessions refunded or at least credited towards my future monthly payments. Rein told me he would call his company headquarters and “call” me the next week.

6. About 2 weeks past and no call from Rein or anyone from Bally Fitness.

7. I went to work out today and talk to Rein, he told me he had the “wrong” number showing me his scribbles on his notebook. (I didn’t get that part when my correct number was listed in Bally’s computer system, he must have been too “busy” to look up my number.)

He tells me, “It’s company policy, we cannot give out refunds for personal training.” I told him to get me the number of the person who “signs” his paychecks so I can talk to the guy who has authority.

Rein tells me they cannot give out numbers of people in charge for security reasons.

Frustrated, I come back home and blogging about it, maybe I will get attention of some executives at Bally Fitness who care about brand image of their company. (Yes, I would like my money back in my credit card, I worked hard for that, and I don’t want to work with another personal trainer at Bally period.)

At this point, I don’t care about getting my money back but the pain is that this whole process took about 2 and a half months without anyone really calling me back, they are just putting my money in their pockets.

I could simply decide to let go of this situation but I am tired of not being treated fairly, I rather let the world know about it and be aware of certain evilness when you sign up for personal training. (never buy a lump sum, buy 1 session at a time, change the company’s policy first.)

I went online and confirmed my experience at Bally Fitness as #2 on Google for the “Worst Fitness Center” in the world! I did also read some really horrible reviews on Yelp about this particular Bally Fitness and I am now regretting that I did not listen to the Yelpers.

Needless to say, I am very disappointed at customer service from Bally Fitness.

I liked “everything” until they took my money and ran. (ran hard)

For any Bally Fitness executives reading this, I would like for you to e-mail me (zedomax at gmail.com) so I can get my refund and spend it on something else.

If this situation gets revolved, I will update this post.

I just feel that in this hard economy, and since I have been going almost bankrupt at one time couple years ago, I want to get every dollar I make spent right, not paying someone’s wages for free.

If I were working at Bally Fitness, I would even take money out of my own wage to make the customer happy, that’s customer service and will grow the brand positively. But taking customer’s money and telling him “wait, wait, wait….” is not going to solve problems and will eventually make your company the worst fitness center in the world. (Good thing I am not the only one…)

UPDATE: Okay, I found additional information from an former employee of Bally Fitness which might explain why I was treated like a 5 year old kid, these guys must stopped from doing further bad business and scamming people’s hard earned money:

There’s been a lot of rumors that Web 2.0 Expo this year really sucked and I have to agree that there were less innovative companies than last year but it’s a good thing I took my crappy HD camera to take vids of the handfuls that are very, very innovative including this Znak It, launched just 1 day before Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco.

Znak It is a company that focuses on creating pay-as-you-go solution for your e-commerce, blog, or anything you are trying to sell such as “premium” content on your website.

It’s a really good idea since a lot of bloggers have “premium” content they could charge some money for. For example, maybe you have a DIY on how to make a POV golf club, and you wouldn’t be able to find this anywhere else in the world, I am sure people would pay for that content. (not that I would)

Here’s Znak It from their solution page:

From what I’ve seen at their Web 2.0 expo booth, Znak It pretty much allows you to use a virtual currency that people can buy with real money to use on buying other stuff. It’s good because Znak It pretty much takes care of small transactions. (e.g. You can charge 20 cents for your premium content. You couldn’t do that with Paypal since Paypal charges at least 30 cents per transaction.)

If Znak-It gets big enough, it might become a viable alternative to Paypal. As for now, we will have to sit and wait, or even go try it out yourself here.

Recovery rebate credit. This credit is last year’s stimulus payment with a slightly different name. Most taxpayers who filed taxes last year already got their full payment—up to $1,200 per couple, $600 per individual, and $300 per child—but a few may not have. For example, if you had a baby in 2008, you can apply on your 2008 return for the $300 child credit, provided the child has a Social Security number. Folks who didn’t earn enough in 2007 to qualify but earned more in 2008 might also be eligible.

Well, I am not saying you should rob anything including diamond vaults and banks but here’s an interesting write-up of how Leonardo Notarbartolo, who was convicted of robbing the Antwerp Diamond Center vault of $100 million worth of inventory, has explained how to rob a diamond vault.

Well, all security systems have flaws, this proves how vulnerable even the most secure vaults in the world are.

At first, Notarbartolo was confused. He seemed to be standing in the vault antechamber. To his left, he saw the vault door. He was inside an exact replica of the Diamond Center’s vault level. Everything was the same. As far as Notarbartolo could tell, the dealer had reconstructed it based on the photographs he had provided. Notarbartolo felt like he had stepped into a movie.

Inside the fake vault, three Italians were having a quiet conversation. They stopped talking when they saw the dealer and Notarbartolo. The dealer introduced them, though Notarbartolo refuses to reveal their names, referring to them only by nicknames.

The Genius specialized in alarm systems. According to the dealer, he could disable any kind of alarm.

“You can disable this?” Notarbartolo asked, pointing at the replica vault.

“I can disable most of it,” the Genius said with a smile. “You’re going to have to do one or two things yourself, though.”

Credit Hack – How to Use Your Credit to Re-Build Your Credit Even If You Have Debt!

One of the worst advice I’ve got in my life was, “CASH IS KING”. Well, I am here to tell you that is completely wrong, “CREDIT IS KING”.

Why?

Well, think of it this way. If you have $10,000 and you spend it all cash, that’s $10,000 you can spend.

Let’s say instead you use that whole $10,000 on your credit card and spend the whole $10,000. A lot of credit card companies will offer you 1-5% cashback on any purchases that you make with their credit card.

Now let’s say you get 5% back, (which I have on one of my credit cards) that’s about $500 extra you can.

Plus, when you spend $10,000 on your credit card and simply pay $10,000 within the 30-day grace period, you pay no interest plus your credit goes up since you are using credit.

Now, if your credit limit was at $10,000 before doing this, the credit card company will likely to raise your limit to another $5000, meaning your credit limit will increase to $15,000.

Why is good?

Well, your credit rating is partly based on how much credit limit you have versus how much credit you have used.

If you paid off $10,000 and increased your credit line to $15,000 from $10,000, you have effectively increased your credit limit by a whopping 50%! That makes your credit better so long as you paid that $10,000 off.

If you keep doing this with every dollar you make, you will eventually be able to raise your credit to a lot, even $50,000 easy.

Now, let’s say for some reason you lost your job. You have $10,000 in the bank. Now, if you didn’t use your credit card a lot (and believed in “Cash is King”), your “emergency” money is $10,000 plus whatever credit you have.(let’s say another $10,000) That’s $20,000 of money and credit you can spend when you lose your job.

Instead, if you have been using credit cards and increased your credit limit to $50,000, you will effectively have $60,000 of money to help you while you find a new job!

Of course, the most important thing here is that you need to be a good spender and accountant, you can’t simply spend without knowing how much you can pay back the credit card company.

The point is, you can “use” your cash to increase your credit limit and your credit rating rather quickly.

If you fall into the trap of “Cash is King”, think again, that’s for dumb people in the 21st century.

Even if you have debt, you can use this method to effectively reduce your APR, increase credit limit, and get a better credit rating.

Even me, I have a good amount of debt but I am prone to using credit cards to get out, don’t become a victim to “Cash is King”.

Credit Card DIY – How to Lower Your APR!

As a person who had over $40,000 in credit card debts, I can tell you how I lowered my APR and effectively paid off most of my debts in a course of a year.

First off, I did read Debt Cures by Kevin Trudeau, which help me understand the credit card companies better and that they are “evil”. (I highly recommended it for those of you with a lot of credit card debt but don’t know what to do about it.)

Anyways, you don’t have to buy the book, the lessons are pretty common sense and I can tell you in my words how to go about lowering your APR.

Here’s the Steps:

1. Call your credit card company. (or the next time you call them for anything)

2. Ask them to lower your APR.

3. If they tell you they can’t, ask them to talk to a supervisor.

4. Tell the supervisor that you have been a great customer (customer since 1990 for example) and you need their help so “please lower my APR”.

5. If they say yes, that’s good but if they say no, simply keep paying your bills on time for 2-3 months and keep trying again.

This simply call-method has effectively reduced my APR from 29.99% to near 9% now.

The hardest part is really making the call but do it if you got high APR.

Once you lower couple of your credit card APRs, the other ones will be a lot easier to bring down as credit card companies work together.

I have to admit, I have had a big debt last year and credit card collectors would call me every hour starting from 8am to 9pm. Of course, they “somehow” found the phone numbers of my former jobs and called them too.

But I guess there’s a way to stop them from harassing you, simply by writing them a written letter.

Of course, I am doing okay now and no one is calling me but if you are in debt and you just want those phone calls to stop, this will help you do just that:

The most important provision allows you to write to a credit card company collector and get them to stop contacting you. It doesn’t make the debt go away and it doesn’t help your credit rating. The credit card company can still sue you, and it might do just that.

But it does stop the phone calls and the harassing letters. It forbids collectors to call your work or call your neighbors.

People need time to organize their finances. People make poor decisions when pressured by collectors. The FDCPA gives people time to think, consult with attorneys and do what is best for them.

Apple Store Hit 500 Million Downloads but 3G is Still Too Slow!

Yey, Apple has hit their 500 million app downloads! Well, I am honestly happy about my iPod Touch since it doesn’t use AT&T’s slow 3G network but come on guys, Apple has really been ripping off us consumers ever since the invention of iPods. (When I first started using iPods and found that you couldn’t transfer a regular MP3 file into it, I knew something was up.)

Of course, I am happy and sad at the same time here just because iPhone is such a ripoff with its super-slow 3G network. Other than AT&T, I’d be very happy with the iPhone but what a deceptive advertising it is.

A lot of you won’t agree with me but bear with me and imagine you are an engineer and marketer who can see through Apple’s evil cash-flow plan.

What Apple did that pisses me and others off:

1. Make iPods and iPhones use proprietary music transfer software so people will have to buy music from the Apple Store.

2. Apple went with AT&T, formerly Cingular, the network I found to be the slowest ever for mobile internet.

3. More deceptive advertising that make iPhones “faster” than it is.

4. Grab a whole bunch more Apple loyalists through their deceptive marketing and “Make Believe”.

Now, if Apple can fix those things, I am right on the Apple bandwagon but so far, MISERABLE FAILURE.

Great designs, great products, but bad execution.

Heck, Apple won’t change because they are making more money doing the way they are doing but at least I know what “should” be done.

Here, I will leave you with these question you can answer: (or ponder about)

Why does Apple have to use proprietary software?

Why can’t I simply copy over my MP3s and AVIs to my iPod and iPod Touch? (Of course, there’s free software out there that can do that but it should come with the iPod as default and that’s my point. People shouldn’t have to jailbreak iPhones just to download some free software, music and whatnot.)

Why is iPhone not available for Sprint or Verizon, where speeds are blazingly faster. (and everyone who’s slightly mobile smart knows AT&T is really really slow.)

(Probably because they want to make ridiculous amounts of money but that’s killing their sales of iPhones to smart consumers like me)

Well, here’s a really simply advice but it could possibly save you a LOT of money next year when you report taxes to the U.S. government. (Now, if you live elsewhere, this might be different)

Since you have until April 2009 to report your taxes for 2008 but your tax deductions only count until end of 2008, you need to really spend before the year is over.

Here’s some tips for saving taxes:

1. If you are going to buy that $20,000 printer for your small business, buy it now and write it off as 2008 expense. Any expenses you know you are going to spend early next year, you might be better off buying it this year. As an example, I just bought bunch of new computers because I know I will need them around February but better to write it off this year then next year.

2. Do you have anything you can donate? Any old computer, gadgets, clothing, or whatever?

Don’t wait, get all that stuff together and take it to your local goodwill store. There’s a $500 limit on this but you might as well donate, help people, and write it off taxes.

3. Get your accounting done in January. Don’t wait until the last minute. One of my friend who owns a small business does his accounting in December. Better to be ready than sorry.

Well, today I am going to do a quick blog DIY on how to increase your revenue by 25% by adding Chitika Premium ads to your blog/website.

Of course, this increase is in comparison to how much you might already be making with Google Adsense ads.

One of the most important things bloggers forget is that making money with Adsense or Chitika, is all about ad placement. Where you place your ads on your site could make a difference of making $100/month or $500 to $1000/month. That’s right, when you optimize your ad placements, you can make 5-10 times more.

Anyways, I will tell you right off the bat that if you are going to increase your Adsense revenue by 25% or more, you need to do the following:

1. Use 550×120 size, if it doesn’t fit in your website, try to use the next biggest, widest size available.

2. Place 1 ad before your content and 1 ad after your content. For correct placement along with AdSense, please refer to the Adsense/Chitika HeatMap I made here.

That’s it. The best part about the Chitika Premium ads is that they only show up on your “search” traffic so they are practically invisible to your regular readers. (Talk about really invisible ads… Of course, you can also do this with Adsense too by adding some PHP code, if anyone wants it, I can do another blog post on it, just let me know.)

December 4th, 2008 marks the start of new Zedomax Network LLC. I wanted to hold off until I was sure I had a foot in the door. (btw, August 14th, 2006 was the very first day Zedomax was re-born as a blog)

Although I have made corporations various times at various different start-up companies I’ve worked for, this time around it feels even more exciting because I am making my own company, a dream that I had since 9 years old.

Well, let me not get too corny here but we are officially now Zedomax Network LLC baby!

I finally paid up most of my initial $30K investment from last couple years and broke even just about now. Not a whole lot of investment but then it is for a guy who had a job making $60-80K/year, barely paying rent and getting to play golf. (Of course, I have all those credit card interest I have to pay off still but the trip was well worth it.)

Zedomax Celebrates Thanksgiving!

Yey, I am up early today and today’s thanksgiving, time to celebrate and be thankful for everything that has happened including just the fact that you are alive.

I want to shout out to our current blogger Andrew, who has been helping me out while I am converting all the blogs in the network to “blog search engine”. Well, I will also have updated version of the Zedomax Search Engine Wordpress Theme available free of charge. (The current version has some bugs and I need to fix some CSS for IE6)

I am also planning a Pro-version of the Blog Search Engine Theme that not only includes the theme itself, I will include an E-book called, “Search“. Basically, it’s all the secrets that I didn’t put in the free theme that’s on the E-book.

Here’s some of the features included:

1. Ability for people to vote on blog posts like digg. (Simplified version)

2. Search engine features that can show your readers recent and popular searches.

3. SEO optimized blog that includes all the “right” plugins you need. (I’ve realized that a Wordpress blog is nothing without having the right plugins, similar to having a stock Nissan-Z versus a Nissan-Z equipped with high perfomance clutch, intake, turbo, etc…etc…)

4. How search-oriented blog theme will help you make more money and grow web traffic faster.

5. Okay, enough business, Happy Thanksgivin’!

Basically, this new E-book will have all the information you will need to build a blog search engine, all the plugins you need, including how to hire bloggers, explanation of how search-oriented people tend to click on ads more, AND the secrets behind Google’s marketing. I think I just figured out how to maximize your Adsense income, you can watch my video here. (But that’s just the tip of the iceburg, I’ve got so many ideas in my bag, THAT will be in the E-book and the Wordpress Theme I will be selling)

I figured I need to actually charge people for the good stuff, otherwise no one will care. That’s the only reason I am selling it, valued knowledge people can appreciate.
