With advances in radar/laser detectors that can detect cops from miles away, police officers have been using radar/laser guns that are more sophisticated so they cannot be detected with some of the older radar/laser detectors.

By learning how to make a LIDAR gun simulator, you will be able to actually test whether your current radar/laser detector can detect them all, perhaps saving you some money in the future from getting tickets.

Of course, my advice is just to drive slow enough that you don’t get tickets. In my experience, cops don’t give you a ticket unless you are going at least 15MPH above speed limit and perhaps driving a bit crazy such as weaving in and out of lanes or cutting off other innocent drivers for no reason.

Also, don’t forget you can get PhantomAlert, which is a software add-on for your GPS and lets you know where the cops are.

Check out this awesome custom-built snowcar that goes practically faster than anything on snow I have ever seen. Based one a Subaru, the Subaru Trax Si sports a funky wheel system (or cat tracks), this is the “ultimate” snowmobile of the year. I am sure just driving this thing around the mountain is as fun as snowboarding.

It combines a two of my favorite things in life: driving a rally car in the snow and snowboarding in the powder in the backcountry. It’s incredibly fun having the ability to push the high-power Subaru on the slopes and to backcountry spots that normal cars could never go!

I’ve always been fond of new technology such as the self parking cars which have been around now for couple years. I have to say though, I don’t think they can actually park the cars in super-tight spots like some here in San Francisco where sometimes it requires you to actually “bump” cars.

Do I really need to spend another $2000 on self parking car feature when I have learned how to do it myself over the 15+ years of driving in metropolitan cities? No thanks robots, I will still park my big, fat SUV with no cameras and self parking car feature.

But for those of you parallel-parking dummies who live in the country, you might definitely need this, no pun intended.

Self-parking cars aren’t really a new idea, but with the design the Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Laboratory is working on, only minimal modifications are required a vehicle’s stock options. The main sensor systems consist of a camera mounted on the rear view mirror, a front radar, and ” couple little off the shelf LIDAR units mounted on the sides.” They’ll need to make a few more modification to take care of the system’s inability to detect obstacles (be it people or terrain), but other than that tiny detail, this is the best autonomous parking prototype I’ve seen so far.

For those of you who are desperately needing to jump start your car (and for some reason even all your cellphones died/you don’t own land lines), you can try this simple method of connecting 12V DC adaptors in parallel to jump-start your car.

So long as you can provide ample 12VDC power, it really doesn’t matter how you jump-start your car. One time, I even used a 12VDC laptop battery to jump-start my car so…

Rummaging through the parts on hand, [Richard] went with his old friend Sonic the Hedgehog. He used two 12-volt, 1 amp Sega Genesis power adapters in parallel hooked up to a 12 volt, 3 amp power supply. The end result is a 12-volt 5 amp source hooked to the car’s electrical system and used to get their road machine started.

Driving Hack – How to Get More Mileage on Your Car by Driving More Efficiently!

Recently, I found out a “secret” on how to get more mileage from your car without any kind of gimicks or gadgets but by doing less, waaaay less.

I admit I am a city boy or city man if you want to call it that. I used to drive very fast, tailgate everyone, cut off everything. That’s just the environment I grew up in South Korea where yelling at your fellow drivers was just like eating breakfast.

Well, I have done that over 15 years of my life but sadly, my fast life has come to an end.

Of course, I did go from 15.4 miles per gallon to a whopping 19 miles per gallon on my V6 gas-powered 2002 Chevy Trailblazer SUV. Now, that’s a whopping 23.38% increase in efficiency of my SUV!

LMAO, I am thinking if EVERYONE in the world did what I did, it could possibly save more gas than any hybrids can.

So, here’s my secret.

1. Accelerate your car gradually at all times unless it’s an emergency. By not acclerating hard on your car, you will use your gas as efficiently as possible.

2. Try to accelerate more on downhills but less on uphills. By accelerating on downhills, you are in effect using your momentum so your gas is used more efficiently. If you try to accelerate too much on an uphill, it’s simply not efficient and you will end up using more gas.

3. This is one of the biggest secrets I found for my SUV. Most cars are most fuel-effcient at speeds between 25 to 55 MPH. Anything less or more will probably be inefficient. What I found was that these speeds are most common during modest traffic.

I used to frown when I encounter traffic on the road, now I smile because I can save more gas.

How?

Simply keep a good distance (about 5-10 seconds) between you and the car in front of you. Then, make sure to let off on the gas if you see brake lights. The 5 to 10 second gap will let you “coast” while your car will get near 99 MPG during that highly efficient mileage time. Of course, the 5-10 second gap also gives you a good chance that the traffic ahead will start moving again.

I have an MPG meter on my SUV and by doing this I found that I got about 60 to 99+ MPG during modest traffic where speeds are around 25 to 45MPH.

YES! That means you can actually get more miles per gallon during TRAFFIC!

As crazy as that sounds, it works.

Modest traffic is your best friend when it comes to driving on the highway. Plus, by keeping a gap between your car and the car in front of you, you will be able to erase traffic waves.

I see that 99% of people in traffic don’t do this. They do the opposite and press on the gas, brake, gas, brake, while I am never even hitting brake most of the time, just gassing as it’s needed to keep my 5-10 second gap.

Think of how much gas the world will save if everyone did this.

You don’t need an electric car, you just need to “drive more efficiently” to save earth.

That’s a whopping 23.38% increase in gas efficiency, THINK ABOUT THAT!

I am sure we can surely use that 23.38% to better use, don’t you think so?

Of course, most of us humans do not have the patience to achieve this because we are humans and we like the gas/brake combo by nature.

But I highly suggest you to try my methods and see if you can become more efficient at driving your gas guzzler. (and save earth)

Besides saving gas and earth, driving in this fashion will lower your heart rate, lessen your risk of heart diseases/cancer, and ultimately let you live longer.

There’s never a good reason to be in a hurry anyways unless your wife is pregnant or someone’s sick. If you must get to work in time, just get up earlier. If you must make it to an appointment, leave earlier. If you just need to go really fast and furious for an adrenaline rush, get a motorcycle like me; it’s much faster and furious than cars anyways.

Hurrying never helps anyone’s life, it just makes you feel like you are doing something faster when in reality, you are simply doing things less efficiently.

Again, there’s absolutely no reason to hurry unless you drive the fire truck.

Mobile DIY – How to Boost Cellphone Signals in Your Car!

Today, I find a great spot near the SF Bay where the winds blog and I can enjoy the outdoors while working on my netbook inside my car. Well, one of the problems I encountered was that the spot didn’t get great cellular signals for my Sprint broadband card. It was one of those remote locations where I got 1xRT instead of EDVO Rev A signals.

There’s actually a lot of ways you can boost your voice/data cellular signals such as a mobile cellular repeaters but I didn’t want to spend a lot of money.

I started rotating my own tires when I was 17 years old with a crappy jack. Of course, not knowing a thing about cars in my younger teen years, I probably used the wrong jack points. Watch the video below to learn how to rotate your tires and also “where” to jack up your car so you don’t unknowingly mess up your car.

Rotating tires isn’t that hard, if you are actually paying money to someone to do this for you, you might reconsider doing it yourself in the future as the recession economy will reward you for that.

My #1 advice?

Get a proper pump jack and jack stands, don’t try to use your emergency, factory jacks.

Jack stands will also guard against any stupid mistakes that could lead to your body crushed under the car. (or RIP yes please be careful when you do this.)

If you can afford it, you can forget the jack and jack stands in favor of a car ramp, which is much safer and quicker.

Car dealers/salesmen have been touted as one of the worst people in the world for ripping off consumers. It’s true, even today, car buying process in America isn’t easy as paying for the retail sticker, you must haggle, haggle, and haggle.

Well, I just came across the “secrets” of car negotiation that could possibly make you a better negotiator the next time you shop for cars.

Salesman: So let me ask you this, Oren. I know you’re a businessman, and we’re both real busy. So if I were to offer you the car at $47,900, would that work?
Weintraub: I would say that if you can do $44K on the car, we would probably have a deal. But I don’t want to present it to him unless it’s a real offer.
Salesman: OK. I’ll see if I can make that deal happen. One more question: Are you in the market for any other vehicles at this time?
Weintraub: What you do right now could lead to more business for you. If we find the people we’re dealing with to be professional and tenacious about price, we’ll send you more business.
Salesman: I’ll call you right back.

Notice also that Weintraub reviewed the specifications on the car: It’s a 2005, certified with 29,000 miles on it. It’s essential to establish — and then confirm — the details of the car you are buying. Year, make, model, number of miles, condition level and warranty details all affect the value of the car.

After a few more rounds of car negotiating, Weintraub got the price of the Mercedes, which was originally on sale for $49,995, down to $45,500. His client bought the car.

Naturally, this comes from Italy, it is the only place where something like this could have been thought up and then built. What would be even better, is if this was able to be separated and driven independently of each other, I am just being a bit picky there aren’t I?

The recession economy is increasing auto insurance fraud like no other in history. According to Autoblog,

Despondent over being financially strapped and unable to cover car payments, vehicle owners are ditching, sinking, or torching their vehicles and reporting the loss to collect insurance payoffs.

It is definitely a shame to see honest citizens affected by the economy and end up burning their cars.

My honest advice is to really get a grip on your life before you attempt to recover money from insurance companies. Life isn’t supposed to be easy but there’s always going to be solutions to problems if you keep looking.

Autoblog also says you can “re-negotiate” your current plans before deciding to burn your car and end up in jail:

A better solution for cash-strapped owners, say experts, is to attempt to renegotiate payments, sell the car, or trade it in for a less expensive model. While you generally won’t come out ahead, those transactions are legal and they’ll keep you out of the slammer.

I actually know someone who does insurance fraud stuff on consistent basis. Just remember, “what you do will come back to you ten fold whether that’s good or bad.”

Well, Toyota has just announced a fully-capable brain-powered wheelchair that you can control with your favorite human body part, the brain! I too, wonder when we will be able to drive a car with our brains but the wheelchair is no small feat for sheezy.

According to Toyota, the company’s BMI technology has advanced to the point where it’s practically instantaneous (the delay is just 125 milliseconds), is 95-percent accurate and will adapt itself to any user’s thought patterns. Next logical question: How long until our cars come sans pedals and steering wheels?
