Roadrunner Supercomputer - The Fastest $133 Million computer in the World!

I’ve always been fond of supercomputers and I even did a college final project on supercomputers. (That’s 10 years ago..)

Here’s Roadrunner Supercomputer, based out of Los Alamos National Laboratory, supposedly a lot faster than the now-runner-up BlueGene from Lawrence Livermore Laboratory in Livermore, California.

Damn, I wish Google released how big their computers are, I bet it lists high on the list too.

The new machine is more than twice as fast as the previous fastest supercomputer, the I.B.M. BlueGene/L, which is based at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.

The new $133 million supercomputer, called Roadrunner in a reference to the state bird of New Mexico, was devised and built by engineers and scientists at I.B.M. and Los Alamos National Laboratory, based in Los Alamos, N.M. It will be used principally to solve classified military problems to ensure that the nation’s stockpile of nuclear weapons will continue to work correctly as they age. The Roadrunner will simulate the behavior of the weapons in the first fraction of a second during an explosion.

WiMax, Mini-Laptops, and Intel\'s Support

A lot of tech bloggers (I won’t name them here) have been bashing how crappy WiMAX is when they haven’t even used it or don’t even know what the chip manufacturers are doing.

Well, finally here’s proof.  At least if Intel is thinking of new CPUs with WiMAX support, it’s going to explode!

I am going to get one of these cool UMPC with WiMax embedded.

Yikes, this looks like a spider alien to me more than a useful machine.  Neverthless, way too cool…

We should see these replacing traditional tractor machines in the near future.

It’s a Plustech Oy / John Deere hexapod logging machine prototype. It looks amazing! Plustech Oy Walking Machine(it seems to down) has strong six-legged, it features to make a logging machine that does less damage to the forest and can move through more challenging terrain than wheeled or tracked logging machines. Depending on the terrain, the ground pressure can be adjusted by changing the machines six shoes, according to Plustech Oy. When the machine confronts obstacles, it simply steps over them. Check out see the video of walking Logging Spider( a very cool video, it really likes a spider).

Hand Ladder Truck!

Here’s a nifty hand ladder that acts as both a ladder and a hand truck.

he 2-in-1 Ladder/Hand Truck.
Unlike traditional step ladders, this unit easily converts to a heavy-duty hand truck, combining two indispensable household tools in one, while taking up half the storage space of keeping both items at hand. The strong, durable aluminum frame supports 300 lbs. as a ladder and 250 lbs. as a truck, while the oversized polypropylene steps provide sure footing. Rated for “Industrial-Heavy” use, the ladder-truck has a padded foam handle, 4″ rubber wheels, and light overall weight make transport more comfortable, and its compact folded depth (6 1/2″) ensures simple, compact storage.

StatoilHydro is building world’s first Floating Wind Turbine!

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Gadgets, Industrial, technology by max on the May 25th, 2008 at 11:37 pm

StatoilHydro is set to launch a full scale floating wind turbine that will open up a ocean-size opportunity of generating energy through wind.

A 2.3Mw wind turbine is attached to a Spar-buoy, similar to offshore loading buoys used in offshore gas mining.

The blades on the floating wind turbines will have diameter of 80 meters, rise 65 meters above sea surface, and also the floatation element will be 100 meters below the sea level anchored by 3 different points.

The wind tubines can be mounted on water depths from 120 to 700 meters initially so not every part of the ocean will be able to be utilized.

The company has already signed all contracts and is in testing phase so once this testing is completed successfully, we will be able to use the floating wind turbine in countless ways.

How will this change the world?

Well, if this floating wind turbine succeeds, we have almost limitless ocean to use this and generate power, meaning this might enough to generate enough electricity for a major seaside cities such as San Francisco where winds are always high but no floating wind turbines exist.

Ultrasonic Distance Measuring Tool, is it better than a Laser one?

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Gadgets, Industrial by max on the May 25th, 2008 at 2:43 pm

All gadgeteers and DIYers know that an ultrasonic distance measuring tool is not hard to make but here’s a company who has put it on the market as a product for about 30 bucks, much cheaper than your laser counterpart.
