Here is something that should be useful for bathrooms in our homes. The toilet is known to be one of the causes for wasted water and the one which escalates our water bill. This could be due to leaks or some defect. But now, all you have to do is attach this device called the H2Orb from AquaOne Technologies.

Simply attach it directly to the water valve behind the toilet and when it spots a leak, it shuts off the water and alerts the user of the leak with an alarm and icon via the featured LCD screen. The whole system operates on a single 3V lithium coin cell battery.

HDTV Hack – How to Connect your Computer to HDTV Wirelessly

For those of you looking to ways to hook up your desktop to your HDTV wirelessly using either HDMI digital connection or standard analog VGA, there IS a way, you can use Atlona’s AT-HDAir product which is a USB HDMI/VGA wireless converter. The unit also supports audio for HDMI connections as of recently (see press release), which means you will no longer need cables nor have your desktop close to your HDTV in order to watch crisp, clear 720P YouTube videos.

As for me, I have been looking for a solution like this one as I have most of my desktops just far enough away where cables will not be an option. I do have a netbook that I thought about hooking up to my HDTV but the CPUs on netbooks are still lacking and I can’t truly stream 720P videos from the internet with an Intel Atom 1.6Ghz processor.

Honestly, you might do better using a real camera (such as a DSLR) for taking photos rather than a smartphone like iPhone but if you must, you can make yourself one of these cool magnifying camera lens along with an LED flash that will let you take close-up, macro shots with ease. Also, don’t forget to adjust your iPhone Lens to focus for macro by hacking it if you are going to use this gizmo.

At first, I just had small metal bezels that I used to hold the lenses up to the camera lens. This was clumsy and upon getting the camera close enough to focus, all of the light was crowded out. These are the problems I intended to solve with this device. This is what I came up with.

NEC, the Japanese consumer electronics company, is having a blast developing TV remotes that work off kinetic energy, meaning it needs no batteries at all. The kinetic energy derived from the user picking up the remote itself and pushing buttons are apparently enough to power the remote itself. Well, why didn’t they make this earlier, think of how much energy could have been save in the last 20 years. I am sure the cost of making one of these remotes is still very high but good innovation, I can see the rest of the world following NEC’s steps now.

It’s the holidays season coming up soon, specifically Thanksgivings where most of you will get 5 or more days off work and visit your parents/family. Well, for that, there’s a perfect gift, a digital photo frame.

Not all digital photo frames are made the same though. Especially for your elders who have less knowledge of computers, you might want to consider getting them a wireless digital photo frame.

Why?

Because the with WiFi digital photo frames you can easily stream them your latest photos via services like Flickr or Picasa. This also is great since they can see your latest photos without fiddling with memory cards, USB connections, and whatnot.

I also tend to like to listen to a lot of free internet radio, so I added internet radio as a requirement here also.

The HP DreamScreen and Intouch UT7150 digital photo frames are probably the best on the market right now that can do both WiFi and internet radio.

Plus, a digital photo frame is even better when you can easily scan through the photos and videos. These two digital frames both come with either touch-controls on the front (for HP) and touchscreen controls.

I find that having touch/touchscreen controls very important for browsing through the photos. Plus, these digital frames allow you to do some more stuff like connect to Facebook or check the news from your favorite blogs without a real computer/laptop on your hand.

Of course, you will need a live internet connection to make these digital frames perform to its fullest so make sure your parents/family have one.

And don’t forget to set it up all the WiFi connections and photo streaming for your parents. You should be able to set it and forget it.

Both HP DreamScreen and the Intouch UT7150 are in the similar price range, I prefer the Intouch one since it’s a full touchscreen while the HP has much bigger screen.

It’s very easy to use a computer LCD monitor (with DVI inputs) as TV by simply plugging in an HDMI to DVI cable. Of course, you will need a separate sound system/speakers unless your LCD comes with speakers too.

Of course, it’s also easy to do the reverse, using your HDTV as computer screen, you will just need an HDMI cable from your graphic card to the HDTV. (all HDTVs have HDMI inputs)

LCD TVs have come down in price, but not enough. If you have a cable box, than your tv tuner is in the that box, not in the tv, so then why buy a tv with a tuner you will never use? Believe it or not you can save almost $200 when you buy a computer monitor instead of a tv.

Here’s a rather interesting hack that involves a regular lawnmower converted into an RC lawnmower. Brilliant!

This should make lawnmowing much more fun. Better yet, your kids will have a blast cutting the lawn.

This instructable will show you how to make your Arduino into an R/C interface that you can use for just about anything requiring remote control. I will also show you how I built an R/C lawnmower using my Arduino, a cheap R/C transmitter and receiver pair, and a couple of electric-wheelchair motors from Ebay. I have used this interface to control anything from basic LED’s to Bipolar stepper motors, mini-robots, lifeless R/C cars from the thrift store, and even a 100lb lawnmower (all with appropriate motor controllers). It is very flexible and easy to change and very simple to set up.

Here’s a really cheap HDMI to DVI cable for those of you who want to connect your computer/laptop to your monitor that has an input for DVI but not HDMI.

I think this is the cheapest I found right now at less than $1.

Btw, you don’t need to shell out like $40 to $60 at your local Best Buy, these cables to the same thing. So long as they are digital, you won’t see any improvements by using better cables. (unless you have a TON of eletromagnetic interference, then it might make a slight difference)

In the analog days, you needed good cables with good eletromagnetic shielding but in digital, you don’t.

For those of you who want to make your own bike trailer (and save about $200 buying a one), you might want to read up on this cool bike hack that shows you how to make a bike trailer. I think this is a great idea for custom bike modders out there who need to make more use of their bikes, especially if they need to lug around luggage to work on a bike. I think this is highly useful as I did lug my Alto Saxophone on my regular cheapy bike rack for years during middle school and that wasn’t a lot of fun to be commuting 5 miles to school everyday.

I made this trailer out of wood as I am a woodworker. I used metal electrical junction box covers cut in half to make my plates for the wheels. The fenders are made out of the middle of a piece of vinyl gutter that I bought at Lowe’s. A 10′ piece of gutter was only about $7.00 and you score it with a utility knife and then just snap it off. Flexes nice and Krylon fusion paint will stick to it well if you let it dry overnight.

Here’s a good hack that will let you install GoogleMaps Navigation on your G1 Phone. I believe the new navigation is only supported with the new Android 2.0 but with this hack, all G1 phone users should still be able to access the new GoogleMaps navigation, yey!

Make sure you have CyanogenMod 4.2.3.1, by the way.

1) Unzip zip to desktop
2) Run Part 1.bat
3) When prompted to press any key, do so; the phone will reboot
4) When your phone is running again, run Part 2.bat
5) When prompted to press any key, the installation process is done.
6) Make sure GPS is enabled
7) Open Maps and press OK
Press Menu
9) Press Directions
10) Enter an end point
11) Click Go
12) Just under “Show on map”, click Navigate.
13) When prompted to install the voice codec, do so.

HD Hack – How to Render Full 1080P or 720P in Sony Vegas Pro 9 Without Freezing or Large Filesize!

While trying to render some of my new videos for upload on YouTube with Sony Vegas Pro 9, I encountered a problem where the rendering process would crawl to a stop after 1% or simply freeze. Well, I found a quick solution around it, that is to render it in MP4 instead of AVI.

This works really well btw, now I can do a 20 minute 1080P video rendering in about 5 minutes.

Use the above screenshot settings and change the frame size to 1920×1024 pixels for 1080P. You can also try the above settings for 720P, which should be pretty good also.

Btw, my first short film with Canon 7D is almost done uploading!

Electronic Paper is a cool looking digital display that is better than just a plain LCD digital display because it offers a thick black figure almost like it has been drawn by a thick marker pen.
It is quite technical but basically, it is the same technology that is used in the modern style eBooks, so you get the idea of what this is all about.

I probably won’t use these cameras for nothing other than slow-motion videos, it seems the color quality and HD videos are average, nothing to rant about but definitely, the high speed feature is the highlight of these cameras.

This is so Star Trek, and yet it is a kit that you buy and it comes with everything that you need. But surely, that cannot be right so let us have a look.

You get a laser diode so care is needed there, but it really looks as if it is possible to produce a proper 3D holographic image, however we could do with a video to see if this actually produces what they claim.

Features – The kit includes a small model car (you can use any number of similarly-sized objects) that is placed in front of the holographic film plate. A laser diode illuminates the object and creates an interference pattern that is captured on the holographic film, creating a three-dimensional image of the object. Palm Pre not updating with Google Contacts!

I’ve just received an e-mail from a Palm Pre user (and also a Zedomax.com subscriber) who is having a big deal of problems synchronizing his Palm Pre with Google Contacts.

Mine works fine but for some reason, his doesn’t.

He has contacted Palm(PALM) and Sprint(S) with no solution to date for over a month now, will you do something about it Palm? You can e-mail me zedomax [at] gmail.com for the customer’s contact. Thanks!

I had contacted you before about the Pre contacts not be catagorized. Palm was
of no help. Just gave the scripted answer and apologized. Big deal. Still no answer.
I do have Outlook.

I have a major problem with my gmail. It has not downloaded since Oct 25. This
also affects my Yahoo accounts. Had it over to the Sprint store, and they can’t
figure it out. It is back there today, supposedly they are calling Palm on a “Hot Line.”

Sprint spent about 5 hours on it yesterday. They were on the phone with Palm, and

came to the conclusion that Google Apps is not supposed to work with the Pre.

They said that they did a work around, and it is working. Kind of make me very

cautious about loading any other Google programs. I have a Google Voice acount,

but have not installed it yet. Do you know if anyone has installed it on the Pre?

Maybe a blog on the Contacts categories would help. I am sure that I am not the only

one that has this issue..

My Canon 7D DSLR Camera Order at Amazon Today!

Yes, today, I finally got the guts to charge some money on my credit cards to buy a whole bunch of DSLR gadgets, mainly for use at CES 2010, I really need it as I can’t compete against other tech bloggers unless I have the right tools at the show. (And yes, you can expect some high, quality HD Youtube videos and pics from Zedomax.com when January hits. I’ve also invested a bunch of money on a week of airfare, hotel, and whatnot. Btw, I am going on Virgin airlines, get WiFi and live blogging on the airplane! Yey!)

So, here’s the sum of what I’ve bought today for my Canon 7D DSLR Camera:
(And btw, I did about a month of researching online and talking to my photographer friends beforewards)

Canon 7D DSLR Camera Body w/ 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM standard zoom lens – $1899.99 on Amazon
SanDisk 16GB Compact Flash 60MB/s – $146.80 on Amazon – Yes, you will definitely need some compact flash, this is the best and fastest Compact Flash you can buy right now. (Alternative Kingston 32GB might be a good option although rated less at 40MB/s. Read this thread for advice on CF cards.)
Extra Battery – I will need an extra battery pack just in case I do some long HD footages, which I will at CES 2010.
The Tamrac Aero Speed Pack 85 Camera/Laptop Backpack – This I will use so I can store both my Canon 7d and my future-wife-to-be 13.3″ ASUS UL30A laptop (which I haven’t got, waiting for the price to drop on/after Black Friday).
Manfrotto Tripod – I will need a tripod definitely for taking some videos or doing interviews. This one seemed ideal as it’s portable yet Manfrotto-quality for durability.
Camera Flash? – I was looking at this cheapo flash that swivels 360 degrees but figured CES will be full of lights anyways, I might just stick with the on-board flash on the Canon.

I spent a total of about $2300 in the new camera equipment. Well, I think it’s definitely going to be worth the investment as I am planning to go to a LOT of shows next year including home shows, web 2.0 shows, and others especially a lot of shows are held in downtown SF where I live 10 minutes away from.

This will be a lot of fun because this is the first DSLR camera I will ever own plus I have been playing a lot with my brother-in-law’s Canon 5d, expect some higher quality vids/photos soon!

JH 13 Pro Review!

CNet’s Steve Guttenburg has just posted a hands-on review of the custom-fitted JH 13 Pro. As an earbud addict who reviews (cheaper) earbuds consistently, this is good to know that the JH 13 Pro comes with 6 drivers consisting of 2 woofers, 2 midranges, and 2 tweeters. That’s awful a lot of sound in an earbud if you ask me.

I probably won’t get one as I don’t think it’s worth the $1000+ price tag but perhaps some of you out there might be willing to cash out for some of the most expensive earbuds in the world.

The JH 13 Pro’s resolution of fine detail is extraordinary, drums sound more realistic than I’ve heard from any other type of headphone. The JH 13 Pro is “fast,” cymbals’ shimmer and sparkle the way they do in real life, and when a drummer whacks his sticks against the drums’ metal rims, the sound is more realistic. Dynamic oomph and slam are the best I’ve heard from an in-ear headphone.

JH 13 Pro Review!

iPhone Hack ALERT- How to Secure Your Jailbroken iPhone!

Here’s a quick alert for iPhone users who have jailbroke their iPhones, you need to secure your iPhone by changing your SSH root password if you haven’t.

Otherwise, it’s very easy for someone to hack your iPhone!

As correctly pointed out by some users in the comments section below, the instruction in Step 2 will change your mobile password only. In order to change root password, type ‘login’ command (without quotes) and then press enter. Now type ‘passwd’ command (without quotes) again and press enter. It will now prompt you to enter your old root password which is ‘alpine’ followed by a new one (twice). Simply enter your old and new password again as you did in Step 3 (for changing mobile password) and you should be all fine. It is highly recommended that you change, both your mobile and root passwords to make sure you are completely safe from any outside SSH attack.
