While Apple has been fighting over Google for VOIP in the US over its over-marketed iPhones, South Koreans have been enjoying the future of smartphones, AMOLED-based phones with NVIDIA chip that can play DivX videos like this flawlessly: (and also stream very fast using WiMax) Also, the phone comes with GPS navigation, 5 megapixel camera w/ cropping software, SRS surround sound, and more it looks like.

*Note – Compare WVGA AMOLED 800×480 pixel LCD on the Samsung versus 480×320 pixel LCD on an iPhone 3GS. Sorry, I am definitely not an Apple fan boy.

The on-board 5 megapixel camera has auto-zoom, auto-color detection/correction, practically beats the pants off iPhone, Palm Pre, or any other smartphone we have seen here in the States.

This particular model is the SPH-W8500. According to Reuters, Sprint will be rolling out phones similar to this NEXT YEAR. Well, there goes the fun. South Korea is always about 1-2 years ahead of all the new Samsung phones we actually see in the States. Perhaps, I will have to bring one back next time I go to Korea.

What is AMOLED? See here on Wikipedia:

AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) is an emerging display technology for use in mobile devices like mobile phones. OLED describes a specific type of ultra thin, ultra bright display technology which doesn’t require a backlight and Active-Matrix refers to the technology behind the addressing of pixels. AMOLED technology continues to make progress towards low-power and low-cost large size (e.g. 40-inch) for applications such as TV.

iPhone users, don’t fret that your phone is really actually way behind the world. I don’t think iPhone will get anywhere near there for another 2 years at least.

Now, where is AMOLED Apple? Where are all the features like AMOLED, why is iPhone so hyped and priced so high? That’s my thought for the day.

Mark my words, iPhone isn’t going to live too long if they don’t start rolling out new versions soon.

Everyone, start believing me, not the (dumb) people who sold you over-priced phones with outdated technology. haha.

Samsung Omnia II Hands-On Review!

Samsung Omnia II has been caught in the wild, the new Samsung smartphone features a Windows Mobile 6.1, 3.7″ 800×480 pixel LCD, and support for HDSPA/GPS/WiFi.

The core feature of the new Samsung Omnia II isn’t its laggy Windows Mobile operating system but the on-board 5 megapixel camera and DVD-quality camcorder that also does DivX and xViD.

For storage, the Samsung Omnia II does great with its 8 gigabyte internal storage plus ability to add more with a microSD slot.

Overall, I am not impressed by the size of the Samsung Omnia II as it’s slightly bigger than the iPhone and there’s no localization support for US users.

The Opera Mobile browser is nothing new, it’s a good browser but nothing like browsers on the iPhones and Palm Pres.

The #1 thing overseas companies like Samsung have to realize is the importance of social networking and Web 2.0, which obviously they haven’t.

But I do know Samsung is always on the verge of great mobile phones, it’s sad to see them use Windows Mobile operating system while companies like Sprint and Palm are pushing open-source linux platforms. As someone who grew up in South Korea and worked there for a year, I know Koreans in general LOVE Microsoft and Windows. I don’t think they will ever get out of that box because most websites in Korea “require” you to use Internet Explorer, especially bank websites that require IE security add-on before you can even log in. Talk about monopoly, I hate IE browsers because they are so susceptible to viruses and really, there has to come a time when Samsung starts embracing the world instead of just the people in South Korea.

Anyways, the Samsung Omnia II looks great but I will stick with my more awesome Palm Pre that can be hacked as a WiFi Router. Long live linux!

Universal mobile phone charger next year

It has been some time since the first time that a universal mobile phone charger was spoken about and as usual, the idea of such a convenient device has been put onto the back burner. However, not all phone makers have been sitting on their hands as it would seem that next we could be getting a universal mobile phone charger with all new films.

Get this from AT&T from the end of the month, its great phone full of features and being Samsung it is going to be very reliable, well they normally are! These phones are great for messaging on the move and to make that easier they have included a full QWERTY keyboard, makes typing so much easier.

The new Samsung PIXON M8800 comes with an 8 Megapixel camera capable of taking photos with 3264×2448 pixel resolution. As far as digital camera ability, this Samsung phone is better than most digital cameras at taking pictures.

The M8800 Pixon will feature autofocus and a flash obviously, but also face/smile/blink detection, panoramic shooting, image stabalisation and shake reduction software, all of which are to be found on ‘proper’ point-and-shoot cameras.

Although iPhone and Google new G1 phone are gaining masive popularity, let’s not forget that Samsung has been making cellphones a lot longer than both Apple and Google, their competitive edge is the ability to make phones like this.

The phone is also able to do geotagging, play DivX videos, and you can even connect it to your TV for videos!

If you are looking for a new cellphone that’s also capable of taking great digital photos, this might be the way to go, you can’t lose on an 8 Megapixel digital camera coupled with touchscreen interface. As far as digital photo capabilities, this Samsung PIXON M8800 proves to be an iPhone Killer.

You won’t get Wi-Fi inside the Pixon, but it is a 3G handset with full 7.2Mbps HSDPA support, so it should speed along quite nicely on the right network. Interestingly, the Pixon has Samsung’s SRS Virtual Surround (often found on the company’s television sets) system inside plus DivX support for watching videos and a TV-Out socket for displaying them on a larger screen.

With everyone in the industry and consumers going green, Samsung has no choice but to follow in people’s footsteps by introducing an Eco-Friendly cellphone made from corn.

Now, I kinda like this concept of making phones from edibles. Will they make some new phones out of milk too? Even better, maybe they can use barley, the same stuff used for making my favorite beverage.

The E200 features a 1.3 megapixel camera, video messaging capabilities and an MP3 player.

Although the device will be available in Europe next month, it doesn’t yet have a release date in the United States.

There are bunch of videos on how to use the new Sprint Samsung Instinct but there’s NO VIDEOS on the browser of the Samsung Instinct.

If Sprint is serious about competing with the iPhone (from a marketing perspective), they gotta get rid of all that voice activated live search crap and make some videos of YouTube playing on the phone OR loading Zedomax.com on the browser.

I think whoever is managing the video marketing section of Samsun Instinct need to be fired. That’s what I’d do. Hire someone who’s capable of making good vids.

I personally HATE voice-activated commands because my Blackberry 8830 always ask me, “Say a command” like 10 times a day, it’s annoying and people don’t need voice activated stuff. I wish manufacturers start focusing more on the internet browser of the phone instead of voice activated technology I’d never use.

Great phone + bad marketing, Sprint better get their act straight soon otherwise people will laugh at them. (if they are not laughing now)

Is Samsung i900 an iPhone Killer?

Is Samsung i900 an iPhone Killer? I think not with a Windows Mobile and no flash support.

An orientation sensor is built into the i900. When rotated, it does this fancy transition whereby the display shrinks and expands back to fill the screen in a different orientation. The 240 x 400 display does seem a little weird, but is not unheard of–we’ve seen it in the ASUS M930’s internal display. It makes sense, too, if you are to use it as a media player because the aspect ratio is much closer to the 16:9 aspect ratio commonly seen in movie files. To that end, the i900 also comes with a media application that supports DivX and Xvid out of the box.
