Honestly, you might do better using a real camera (such as a DSLR) for taking photos rather than a smartphone like iPhone but if you must, you can make yourself one of these cool magnifying camera lens along with an LED flash that will let you take close-up, macro shots with ease. Also, don’t forget to adjust your iPhone Lens to focus for macro by hacking it if you are going to use this gizmo.

At first, I just had small metal bezels that I used to hold the lenses up to the camera lens. This was clumsy and upon getting the camera close enough to focus, all of the light was crowded out. These are the problems I intended to solve with this device. This is what I came up with.

Here’s a good hack that will let you install GoogleMaps Navigation on your G1 Phone. I believe the new navigation is only supported with the new Android 2.0 but with this hack, all G1 phone users should still be able to access the new GoogleMaps navigation, yey!

Make sure you have CyanogenMod 4.2.3.1, by the way.

1) Unzip zip to desktop
2) Run Part 1.bat
3) When prompted to press any key, do so; the phone will reboot
4) When your phone is running again, run Part 2.bat
5) When prompted to press any key, the installation process is done.
6) Make sure GPS is enabled
7) Open Maps and press OK
Press Menu
9) Press Directions
10) Enter an end point
11) Click Go
12) Just under “Show on map”, click Navigate.
13) When prompted to install the voice codec, do so.

Palm Pre not updating with Google Contacts!

I’ve just received an e-mail from a Palm Pre user (and also a Zedomax.com subscriber) who is having a big deal of problems synchronizing his Palm Pre with Google Contacts.

Mine works fine but for some reason, his doesn’t.

He has contacted Palm(PALM) and Sprint(S) with no solution to date for over a month now, will you do something about it Palm? You can e-mail me zedomax [at] gmail.com for the customer’s contact. Thanks!

I had contacted you before about the Pre contacts not be catagorized. Palm was
of no help. Just gave the scripted answer and apologized. Big deal. Still no answer.
I do have Outlook.

I have a major problem with my gmail. It has not downloaded since Oct 25. This
also affects my Yahoo accounts. Had it over to the Sprint store, and they can’t
figure it out. It is back there today, supposedly they are calling Palm on a “Hot Line.”

Sprint spent about 5 hours on it yesterday. They were on the phone with Palm, and

came to the conclusion that Google Apps is not supposed to work with the Pre.

They said that they did a work around, and it is working. Kind of make me very

cautious about loading any other Google programs. I have a Google Voice acount,

but have not installed it yet. Do you know if anyone has installed it on the Pre?

Maybe a blog on the Contacts categories would help. I am sure that I am not the only

one that has this issue..

iPhone Hack ALERT- How to Secure Your Jailbroken iPhone!

Here’s a quick alert for iPhone users who have jailbroke their iPhones, you need to secure your iPhone by changing your SSH root password if you haven’t.

Otherwise, it’s very easy for someone to hack your iPhone!

As correctly pointed out by some users in the comments section below, the instruction in Step 2 will change your mobile password only. In order to change root password, type ‘login’ command (without quotes) and then press enter. Now type ‘passwd’ command (without quotes) again and press enter. It will now prompt you to enter your old root password which is ‘alpine’ followed by a new one (twice). Simply enter your old and new password again as you did in Step 3 (for changing mobile password) and you should be all fine. It is highly recommended that you change, both your mobile and root passwords to make sure you are completely safe from any outside SSH attack.

It should come to no surprise that the HTC Dream can run Android 2.0 since its running a predecessor already but here it is, someone hacked it so it runs the same 2.0 version like the new Motorola DROID.

Rather than hacking it, I would say to wait until upgrades are available from your wireless network carriers, I am sure Google will have the upgrades available soon for all Android-based smartphones including the G1 phone. (Then again, I guess updates might not be available unless you hack it for older Anroid phones. Why? I would certainly believe it would be easy to upgrade if Android is linux-based. OR maybe… keep your fingers crossed and subscribe to Zedomax.com until we have the good news.)

Google has just announced GoogleMaps Navigation for Android platform smartphones like the G1 Phone and more. I think this is going to be big in the next few years and definitely take a big chunk out of the current on-board GPS market.

I think this is actually good for the GPS navigation business since more competition means lower prices and better GPS systems. Even now, I see all these outdated GPS systems on new cars, they simply can’t compete against even my Palm Pre’s (or Blackberry’s) GoogleMaps.

AT&T now clearly “guilty” of messing with net neutrality, doesn’t allow tethering nor MMS on iPhone 2G with OS 3.1.2. Well, you don’t have to worry about AT&T, they don’t control your own iPhone, simply hack it and learn how to tether iPhone 2G plus enable MMS here:

1. Backup original CommCenter (goes without saying…)
2. Replace CommCenter in: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreTelephony.framework/Support/ with a patched one.
3. Chmod the new CommCenter to 755
4. Open /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/M68AP.plist and insert a true boolean value for “mms” under capabilities

Blackberry Storm 2 First Images and Gizmodo thinks Storm 2 is a Piece of SH**!

Here’s some of the first images of the new Blackberry Storm 2. This grabbed my attention because part of the reason why I didn’t buy a new Blackberry was because the new Blackberries really sucked. (no real improvements over previous versions other than new packaging)

Don’t get me wrong, I used to LOVE my Blackberry (8830), it was the most versatile piece of gadget I had as it fit in my pocket snuggly plus it actually had a physical keyboard so I can type blinded while driving 80MPH interstate highway 101. I had that Blackberry 8830 for almost 2 years until it broke on me couple months ago. I went to the store to buy the new Blackberry Tour, only to end up buying Palm Pre, which has a WiFi router capabilities.

For the 2 years I had the 8830, I was very tempted to get the Blackberry Curve or the Blackberry Storm, both of which I ended up NOT getting, simply because my friends got them. In my testings, the Curve and the Storm both had a camera (which was great) but they were about twice as thick as my 8830. Plus, the browser wasn’t much improved, I would have to keep using my Opera Mini, which is still lacking for multi-media. I even tested out the Curve/Storm’s YouTube video playing capabilities, which it uses not flash but Windows Media Player like thingee and not 300×250 pixels. (like iPhone and Palm Pre) I didn’t see why I had to upgrade my old blackberry, I decided to wait for the next Blackberry.

Of course, Blackberry Tour recently introduced and that sucked too. Good thing Palm Pre came out at around the same time so, good by Blackberry!

I wish Blackberry would actually start introducing innovations like they used to. Right now, as far as I can see, there’s no competitive advantage for Blackberries especially since more smartphones are being created by big companies like Samsung and LG. Btw, have you SEEN the new Samsung and LG smartphones they have in South Korea? (It’s ridiculous, like iPhone times 45!)

Anyways, I have to agree with Brian Lam’s point that Blackberry Storm 2 is probably piece of sh*t if it doesn’t already come with AMOLED and a physical keyboard. It seems Blackberry is actually trying things that have failed, WHY?!?

But truly, I hope Blackberry starts acting like Blackberry again instead of making 2nd-grade smartphones that can’t compete with iPhones and Palm Pres. At least they should treat bloggers nicer.

P.S. Me and the guys are secretly happy we don’t have to review yet another piece of shit touchscreen handset (our opinion was informed by Walt and Engadget’s impressions, FYI, and has nothing to do with the politics of the situation.) If was really worth reviewing, we’d go out and buy one for testing.

Wow, I am impressed, the South Koreans are really creating a new standard for smartphones. Clearly, the new LG Chocolate phone going by model numbers LG-SU630, LG-KU6300, and LU6300 are right on the mark for the next revolution of iPhone killers.

Like the new line of Samsung W8500, this new LG Chocolate features a whopping 800×345 pixel WVGA AMOLED LCD, plays DivX movies, a whopping 8 megapixel camera, and a 3D GUI. (Launched 9/29/09)

It looks like this phone has been launched since only about a week ago so, we should expect it here in the States about next year.

This particular model is the SPH-W8500. According to Reuters, Sprint will be rolling out phones similar to this NEXT YEAR. Well, there goes the fun. South Korea is always about 1-2 years ahead of all the new Samsung phones we actually see in the States. Perhaps, I will have to bring one back next time I go to Korea.

What is AMOLED? See here on Wikipedia:

AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) is an emerging display technology for use in mobile devices like mobile phones. OLED describes a specific type of ultra thin, ultra bright display technology which doesn’t require a backlight and Active-Matrix refers to the technology behind the addressing of pixels. AMOLED technology continues to make progress towards low-power and low-cost large size (e.g. 40-inch) for applications such as TV.

iPhone users, don’t fret that your phone is really actually way behind the world. I don’t think iPhone will get anywhere near there for another 2 years at least.

Orange will be Offering iPhone in the UK!

It’s interesting because I have been refusing to get the iPhone because of AT&T here in the States while all of Europe is getting blazingly fast network speeds on their iPhones. One of my friends “claim” that Skype Mobile works flawlessly in Ukraine and Dubai, which I believe is probably true.

On the side note, Orange will be offering iphones in the UK and O2’s previous exclusive deal with Apple will end soon according to BBC News (which I don’t read much but for all you bloody readers out there…):

The deal ends an exclusive arrangement between UK network operator O2 and the Californian phone maker, which has been in place since 2007.

Orange said its customers would be able to buy the phone “later this year” but did not specify a date or pricing.

Orange will also be merging their network with German T-Mobile it looks like:

Orange recently revealed plans to merge its UK network with Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile to create a business with 28.4 million customers.

The development of flexible screens could be the way forward to developing small flexible screens suitable for mobile communications. Of course, this technology is not going to be available in the immediate time but it shows possibilities for the future.

It seems that organic LED’s are a lot cheaper to produce, whereas the LED’s that you see in buildings and in advertising boards are a lot more expensive and therefore are totally impractical for the purpose. This new technology is produced by placing the LED material onto really thin layer to produce a sheet of this material. As the process gets established the costs will fall.

Hack your Palm Pre to act as a WiFi Router. – This is what I did to my Palm Pre the very second day I got it. Don’t forget, you can tether using USB too. Sprint so far has been pretty nice about this so you shouldn’t worry about them “tracking” you, just don’t abuse it by connecting your mom and sister’s computer to the Pre wifi.
Learn how to SSH into your Pre. – Since Palm Pre is based on Linux, there exists literally MILLIONS of linux software you can install. The first thing you need to do is install SSH (secure shell access), so you can install all types of linux software.
