Blackberry Storm 2 First Images and Gizmodo thinks Storm 2 is a Piece of SH**!

Here’s some of the first images of the new Blackberry Storm 2. This grabbed my attention because part of the reason why I didn’t buy a new Blackberry was because the new Blackberries really sucked. (no real improvements over previous versions other than new packaging)

Don’t get me wrong, I used to LOVE my Blackberry (8830), it was the most versatile piece of gadget I had as it fit in my pocket snuggly plus it actually had a physical keyboard so I can type blinded while driving 80MPH interstate highway 101. I had that Blackberry 8830 for almost 2 years until it broke on me couple months ago. I went to the store to buy the new Blackberry Tour, only to end up buying Palm Pre, which has a WiFi router capabilities.

For the 2 years I had the 8830, I was very tempted to get the Blackberry Curve or the Blackberry Storm, both of which I ended up NOT getting, simply because my friends got them. In my testings, the Curve and the Storm both had a camera (which was great) but they were about twice as thick as my 8830. Plus, the browser wasn’t much improved, I would have to keep using my Opera Mini, which is still lacking for multi-media. I even tested out the Curve/Storm’s YouTube video playing capabilities, which it uses not flash but Windows Media Player like thingee and not 300×250 pixels. (like iPhone and Palm Pre) I didn’t see why I had to upgrade my old blackberry, I decided to wait for the next Blackberry.

Of course, Blackberry Tour recently introduced and that sucked too. Good thing Palm Pre came out at around the same time so, good by Blackberry!

I wish Blackberry would actually start introducing innovations like they used to. Right now, as far as I can see, there’s no competitive advantage for Blackberries especially since more smartphones are being created by big companies like Samsung and LG. Btw, have you SEEN the new Samsung and LG smartphones they have in South Korea? (It’s ridiculous, like iPhone times 45!)

Anyways, I have to agree with Brian Lam’s point that Blackberry Storm 2 is probably piece of sh*t if it doesn’t already come with AMOLED and a physical keyboard. It seems Blackberry is actually trying things that have failed, WHY?!?

But truly, I hope Blackberry starts acting like Blackberry again instead of making 2nd-grade smartphones that can’t compete with iPhones and Palm Pres. At least they should treat bloggers nicer.

P.S. Me and the guys are secretly happy we don’t have to review yet another piece of shit touchscreen handset (our opinion was informed by Walt and Engadget’s impressions, FYI, and has nothing to do with the politics of the situation.) If was really worth reviewing, we’d go out and buy one for testing.

Blackberry saves a Skiers from Falling 700 Feet!

Here’s a rather interesting story where a skier got wedged between two rocks. The blackberry in his pocket made his body just wide enough to fall 700 feet and saved his life.

At first I thought the Blackberry saved the skier by letting him call 911 but I guess there’s more uses with Blackberries than just calling the emergency department.

Very interesting, I am sure someone is already using a Blackberry to put butter on their bread already. (Congrats to David Fitzherbert for making it alive!)

“After 70 feet it narrowed and I became stuck like a cork in a bottle between the walls.

It’s interesting to note that Blackberries may be pretty secure, so long as you are using the Enterprise Server, which I don’t.

I don’t believe that the Blackberries are THAT secure, it’s a machine, you simply can’t rely too much on machines. I am sure there’s a better way to secure your data but for right now, I do agree using Blackberry Enterprise Server might be the smartest thing for thugs and drug dealers alike to do.

So if you are a high-profile gangster, make sure to get that Blackberry, not the iPhone.

BlackBerry 9630 Niagara Spotted in the Wild with Qualcomm CDMA!

Tight, looks like Blackberry 9630 is not far away for people like me who’s still holding onto the 8830. Anyways, it’s a good news that the 9630 will probably like its predecessors but better, faster, and meaner. Lookin’ forward to it RIM.

Not only is the phone turned on this time, but we’ve also caught it lying across some shagadelic leopard print. Additionally, the fine folks over at the Crackberry forums have a couple of less stylish pics, allegedly uploaded by someone trying to hawk the phone on craigslist for a cool $800. Those images show off what appears to be a battery slot on the back that’s slimmer than current models.

I am not a big fan of diamond-studded cellphones, I honestly think it’s waste of valuable resources but this diamond-studded Blackberry Bold makes me think twice. What’s up with the AZERTY keyboard? Is that for another country??? (Excuse my ignorance, I live in the USA)

Wow, check out the new Blackberry Gemini 9300! It doesn’t look whole lot different from my 8830 but the inside may be much faster, let’s look at the pre-specs here:

The screen will be larger than the BlackBerry 8900, and that will also include a higher resolution

The CPU will also be beefed up. We’re not sure if this means it will include something more powerful than the Bold’s 624MHz processor or not, but we’d like to think so.

The device is said to be silver (think BlackBerry 8830)

The keyboard is a little more rounded than the BlackBerry 8900

The Send/End keys are rounded instead of being flat on the sides

Styling is not drastically different — it keeps with the 8900/Storm styling

It of course rocks quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, and tri-band UMTS/HSDPA

Wi-Fi and GPS was not confirmed, but we’d say there’s about a 99.99% chance

Camera specs were not confirmed as well, but you can bet you’re looking at 3.2 megapixels or better

Hmmm, well, I just hope the size is smaller than the Bold or Storm, I find the they are too bulky over my 8830 so I am not switching until this 9300 comes out. (and hopefully smaller or same size as an 8830)

Well while I *thought* for sure that Obama would be keeping his blackberry with special encryption provided by the NSA, that’s not the case and Obama might be ditching his RIM Blackberry for a Windows Mobile phone.

Now, when you think of stability of security, do you think of anything *Windows*???

Arghhh, this might be the worst decision ever if the President does decide to go with a virus-susceptible Windows phone.

I’ve personally have had numerous Windows-based smartphones and I am glad to say they all SUCK. (Basically the operating system starts clogging after a month of use.)

BOOOOO Windows, go away, we don’t want your stinkin’ mobile products to represent America, at least start giving out free software like Ubuntu.

AT&T BlackBerry Bold Review – Don’t Buy It!

As many of you readers know, I only post things that I can backup on this blog and to say the least, don’t buy the AT&T Blackberry Bold because I tried it last night and it’s as slow as your 3G iPhone.

It was my friend’s birthday in downtown San Francisco, (I also did test the 3G iPhone along with the Blackberry Bold) and had the chance to use his new AT&T Blackberry Bold.

Well, the benchmark was of course with my Sprint Blackberry 8830. Aside from mobile internet speed issues, the Blackberry Bold proved to be bulkier in size while the built-in camera was definitely a plus over my 8830.

In my speed tests, I pulled up Zedomax.com and couple of other sites. My Sprint Blackberry 8830 took about 15 seconds while the AT&T Blackberry Bold took over a minute! (Same thing happened with the iPhone 3G, which my friend’s girlfriend had in the same testing room.)

A lot of you consumers are mislead by over-fed advertising online, on TV, and elsewhere.

But I can explain exactly WHY AT&T’s network is simply too slow for mobile browsing:

1. AT&T is on HSDPA. HSDPA is simply the 3G version of GSM, which most of telecommunication companies in the world use. Now this HSDPA is SLOW in America. (I have however heard that it’s faster in Finland where Nokia is based from)

Also read up on GSM, which is the backbone of HSDPA.

2. Sprint is on CDMA and EDVO. Basically, CDMA is used in only few countries such as South Korea, where CDMA proved to be super-fast, and is the backbone for WiMAX, the 4G technology.

I have lived in South Korea couple years ago and I have to say, cellphone technology is really about 2-3 years behind in the U.S. as far as customer usability goes. (Btw, WiMAX was developed in Korea, now being implemented slowly by Sprint.)

Well, before you can attack me with your comments, please do read up on these too:

EDVO on Wikipedia

CDMA on Wikipedia, which is basically backbone behind EDVO and WiMAX.

If you have took college classes on computer networking like me, you know why CDMA is faster, because it’s digital channels divided, perfect for mobile internet.

You do have to realize GSM was really built for voice while CDMA was built for making efficient use of digital signals.

Well, to sum it all up, real live testing is always a good measure of which mobile internet is the fastest. Even me, I do theorize a lot but it came to me yesterday, I was indeed right. (Thank you very much. )

3. Lastly, but not least, AT&T is basically Cingular since they bought Cingular couple years ago. I used to be on Cingular and switched to Sprint after extensive testing of all U.S. telecommunication companies. (You will probably find a lot of data on this blog by searching for it if you really want.)

In all, I just want to inform you of the features you need to look at before buying a phone. I don’t work for Sprint, I just know that my Sprint Blackberry has the fastest mobile internet speeds.

In addition, Verizon Wireless is also on CDMA, and they are probably as fast as Sprint.

In all of my previous testings in the U.S. in SF downtown (we even rented a hotel room just for that), CDMA proved to be superior to GSM as far as mobile internet speeds go.

Now, if you don’t really browse on the internet and still want to get the Blackberry Bold from AT&T, go ahead but if you need the fastest, fastest mobile internet, I highly and strongly advise you to wait until Blackberry Bold or similar model becomes available on Sprint or Verizon Wireless.

Again, I am not biased, I can see through the mass-media marketing of telecommunication companies in the U.S. If you are pretty expert on this topic, I am sure you will agree too.

Besides the fact that CDMA is superior over GSM, another thing you have to note is the number of cellphone towers that Sprint has over AT&T is enormous, also due to the fact that Sprint bought Nextel, one of the biggest (if not one and only) walkie-talkie-style networks.

I am sure AT&T’s network can be slightly faster in certain locations in highly metropolitan areas. But overall on average, AT&T never had their own network. They bought the dying Cingular and simply marketed with billions of dollars. (Which is why they are successful)

Well, that’s enough banging for today and like I told you, I know this mobile internet stuff because I use it everyday to make sure my site is running. Everytime my site goes down for more than an hour, I am losing a lot of money so even seconds are important to me on the cellphone.

I am sure I will get a lot of positive and negative comments on this post, please don’t post dumb, negative comments, only comments that can be backed up with real facts, or they will be marked “spam” immediately and permanently IP-banned from Zedomax.

Happy smart cellphone shopping! (I know I know, Steve Jobs and AT&T hates me by now. Hey, but I am stating facts here, not just spending billions of dollars into advertising and cellphone-wash the masses.)

AT&T Blackberry Bold Review and Thoughts!

Blackberry Bold is now available to order through Best Buy. Of course, you will want to avoid being on AT&T’s slow network. My best suggestion is to wait until Sprint has Blackberry Bold available. (You can buy this straight up for $679.99 and ask your Sprint dealer to switch over your plan if you want.)

As far as the Blackberry Bold goes, I think it’s a real good buy, perhaps a lot better than the touchscreen Blackberry Storm as you cannot replace the reliable physical keyboard with “touchscreen” keys. Even iPhone users’ most complained feature is the hard-to-use keyboard.

For anyone who needs a good phone for business, I do highly recommend this Bold over the Storm as keyboard just simply sucks on anything touch.

As I have stated in my previous DIY on how to effectively use a mobile phone, a physical keyboard is great for navigating through Mobile GoogleMaps while you drive. (although not recommended) For advanced GoogleMaps commuters (including me), you need to be able to type with your right hand while driving with the other. (I am sure you could do this on the iPhone, but trust me, it’s a lot easier on a Blackberry with a good keyboard)

The best part about ALL (NEW) Blackberries is that they support both CDMA and GSM on one phone. Not many other phones do this although I’ve seen some Samsung phones do it. If you are an international traveler, this will be great phone that you can use all over the world(GSM Sim Card)) while taking advantage of Sprint’s fast network. (CDMA-based, and WiMAX 4G coming soon)

Well, that’s my 2 cents on your next Blackberry investment, if you really want it, go knock yourself out.

Life Hack – How to Save Time using Mobile Internet and GoogleMaps!

Last night, I was cooking some great sirloin beef that I bought at Costco the other day. And of course, the sourdough bread I bought 2 weeks ago was too hard to eat. (I could have wacked someone in the head with the hard sourdough bread and killed him/her.)

Anyways, in order to search for a solution for my too-hard, outdated San Francisco’s genuine sourdough bread, I immediately launched my Opera Mini browser on my Blackberry in my kitchen.

Upon enter “How to revive bread” on Google, I immediately found couple articles and one told me to soak bread in water and put it in the oven at 375 degrees for about 10 minutes.

Well, it turns out I did “revive” my sourdough bread and was able to cook a full meal.

The point of story?

Mobile internet is helping each and every individual who use it. Of course, I could have simply went into my livingroom and search on Google but the point is that I didn’t need to and all that “information” I needed was right there in the palm of my hands, my Internet-enabled Blackberry.

If that doesn’t convince you, I can give you another story from the other day when I was helping my friend move stuff.

I was supposed to follow his car to his house but I got lost while on the Bay Bridge. Well, I was lucky that I had saved his home location as Favorites on my GoogleMaps (on my Blackberry).

I simply asked GoogleMaps to find the best direction from Bay Bridge (Current location using GPS) to his house and that did save me the headache of getting lost.

The day before, I was in Pier 39 in San Francisco, I needed to get some water but I didn’t want to get ripped off by buying water from one of the tourist shops. I simply looked up “liquor store” and walked to the liquor store about 3 blocks away. I saved about a dollar and also noted the liquor store for future visits to Pier 39.

That’s just 3 examples of how mobile internet could save you time and money while on the go. If I hadn’t had those tools on my Blackberry, it would have probably cost me a lot more time.

Blackberry Bold will be coming out soon on October 27th along with AT&T’s (crappy) 3G network.

The good news is that we will finally have a physical new Blackberry model out as I am a Blackberry-lover.

I do like my Blackberry over any other cellphones simply because the call “quality” is comparable to a landline while other great phones like iPhone don’t have that voice quality.

Of course, Blackberries are also great for GPS-enabled GoogleMaps, typing with 1 hand while driving, and you can accomplish a whole lot more in comparison to other lesser-business-oriented phones.

Oh boy, here’s some leaked photos of the Blackberry Storm. I do like it because it’s looks just like my Blackberry 8830 except everything is touchscreen.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Blackberry Storm outperforms iPhones as far as keyboards are concerned. (as they always have, Blackberry still leads iPhones in sales)

Here’s a video of the new Mobile GoogleMaps version 2.3.1 with StreetView on my Blackberry 8830. Above is me spying on Google’s San Francisco headquarter on 345 Spear Street.

Anyways, the new mobile GoogleMaps is pretty darn slow but I ain’t complaining since I am sure they will make it faster in the upcoming versions.

Google has just launched its new Mobile GoogleMaps that includes Street View. Now you can see the street view on your Blackberry or PDA just like the destop version.

Today we’re launching a new version of Google Maps for mobile with the same street-level imagery available on desktop. Wondering if the restaurant in your search results is the one you’re thinking of? Just click “Street View” after your search to see the storefront. Unsure about a complicated intersection in your directions? Use Street View to see a photo, so there’s no mistaking your turn. You can also launch Street View from any address where we have photography, or simply by clicking on the map and selecting “Street View”. You can browse Street View overlaid on the map or in full screen, rotate your view to see more of your surroundings, and move along the street.

Verizon Blackberry Storm Leakage...

Looks like Verizon will be offering Blackberry Storm real soon as they have sent out flyers to their reps (and above is that).

As expected, the 9530 Storm will feature that controversial “click” touchscreen with built-in tactile feedback, GSM connectivity for global use in addition to EV-DO, visual voicemail, a 3.2 megapixel camera with video, and a full HTML browser. Sadly, there’s no pricing information or specific release date, but we’ve got a feeling we’ll get those soon — stay tuned.

Here’s a video demo of the new Blackberry Bold. It looks pretty good, I think you need to install Opera Mini take advantage of the Blackberry though.

Something we should point out as well is that when using Internet Explorer or Firefox browser emulation, a lot of sites don’t load and it gives an error, even over 3G or Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi was turned off for the first part of the video, and then later turned on. What do you think of the browser now that you’ve seen it in action?

BlackBerry (or as it’s commonly known, crackberry) addiction is actually getting to be somewhat passé, what with the iPhone mania. Still, look at every train, plane, and automobile, and you can generally find someone buried in their blackberry, furiously typing on those tiny keys and scrolling through their email.

Well, here’s some spy peek into the Blackberry Javelin. It does look promising, I can wait to get my hands on one.

Not much has come to light about a release date as of yet, but we can tell you that the Javelin will feature a 480 x 360 display, 3.2-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, quad-band GSM/EDGE support and of course the full QWERTY keyboard. The Javelin will be running OS 4.6 and powered by the ArgonV processor.

GoogleMaps working on Voice Search with Blackberries

Google is working on voice search functions with their GoogleMaps on Blackberries. Now, this is really old news as I have covered Microsoft’s TellMe service which does exact same thing for more Blackberries except using Microsoft’s LIVE search and LIVE maps.

Now, in the long run, I would predict Google win this voice-search race since Google does have better search engine and better maps.

Well, it looks like the Blackberry revolution will be here soon to compete against the iPhone. Of course, Verizon and Sprint networks are so much faster, that’s the only reason I’d use it over the iPhone.

The Boy Genius has a bunch of new details on the upcoming touchscreen Blackberry, including the interesting tidbit that it’ll be a lifetime exclusive on Verizon in the US and Vodafone in Europe. It’ll have a mere four physical keys and will run on 3G EV-DO Rev. C as well as GSM HSPA for international use. No word on when this thing is going to drop, or whether or not anyone who uses a Blackberry will allow a physical QWERTY keyboard to be pried from their grip, but we’ll keep you updated.

Okay, we did a quick post about the rumored Blackberry 9000 without 3G. I guess now the rumor has changed so it will have 3G. Duh, why would Blackberry sell something without high speed broadband? We should have realized this beforehand.

It looks like The Boy Genius Report has scored some more information on the BlackBerry Niagara. Apparently it’s a 3G (EVDO) device after all, planned for Verizon in May 2009. It’s said to feature QWERTY, 480×360 LCD, aGPS, 3.2MP camera and OS 4.7.

Blackberry 9000 is rumored to come in cheaper form and without 3G. As a user of the latest 8830, “Are u kidding me?”

Without high speed data, it will make the Blackberry useless, especially for people like me who can use it as a broadband modem simply by connecting a USB cable.

So you know how we’ve been talking about the BlackBerry 9000’s ridiculously high selling price? Well, it looks like RIM is gearing up to launch a 3G-less BlackBerry 9000 so to speak. It looks pretty similar but there are also a few changes to the design like a larger bezel around the front, and a whole different back case. Besides no 3G, we’d imagine the specs to be pretty similar to the BlackBerry 9000. Enjoy a larger-sized photo of this conceptual sketch after the jump!

I have lived in South Korea couple years ago and I have to say, cellphone technology is really about 2-3 years behind in the U.S. as far as customer usability goes. (Btw, WiMAX was developed in Korea, now being implemented slowly by Sprint.)
