For those of you who want to make your own bike trailer (and save about $200 buying a one), you might want to read up on this cool bike hack that shows you how to make a bike trailer. I think this is a great idea for custom bike modders out there who need to make more use of their bikes, especially if they need to lug around luggage to work on a bike. I think this is highly useful as I did lug my Alto Saxophone on my regular cheapy bike rack for years during middle school and that wasn’t a lot of fun to be commuting 5 miles to school everyday.

I made this trailer out of wood as I am a woodworker. I used metal electrical junction box covers cut in half to make my plates for the wheels. The fenders are made out of the middle of a piece of vinyl gutter that I bought at Lowe’s. A 10′ piece of gutter was only about $7.00 and you score it with a utility knife and then just snap it off. Flexes nice and Krylon fusion paint will stick to it well if you let it dry overnight.

Why do bike manufacturers still have no factory-default brake lights? Well, that’s probably too much added cost but for those of you who with some hacking skills, you might want to consider “hacking” one of these awesome bike handlebar brake lights into your bike bars.

Group riding would be much safer if bikes had brake lights. The lack of brake lighting on bicycles has lead to the audio cues of “SLOWING” or “STOPPING” being shouted at every turn. While this may enhance safety, it certainly cuts into the serenity of a ride.

This project offers a viable solution that can increase both safety and serenity on a group ride. With embedded programming made easy by the Arduino integrated development environment, electronics getting smaller, more capable, and cheaper, this project possible for the do-it-your-selfer.

Imagine an arcade style bike simulator that is available for inside your home, it is educational tool as it has been devised to teach about the riding in a busy city or town environment. However, of course that is not going happen, as it is going to be like free roaming on GTA but without the weapons!

If the price is right and I suspect the price is not going to be right, but if the price was right, then this could be a brilliant game. Oh sorry, learning tool!

Honda to launch bike sim next year

Google Trike, I want one!

Google Trike may be one of the first signs that Google may indeed planning to take photographs of virtually everything that exists on earth today. (well, maybe they will eventually go into space someday, we will never know)

Google is actually offering visitors to submit places that you want the Google Trike to go such as amusement parks, zoos, or anywhere a Google Trike can go. (and Google Van can’t. I’ve actually submitted one myself, the SF Zoo. I just don’t see why a zoo in Japan is already on GoogleMaps in ultra high-res while my local SF Zoo (which is one of the best zoos in California) isn’t discoverable on GoogleMaps. Well, so goes my wishes to Googlers. (And yes, I LOVE ANIMALS! I feel like I am one too!)

Google Trike may be also be a great idea for building one yourself to take continuous photos of where you travel to. (on the trike that is…)

I think Google also may offer some jobs to people to for riding the Google Trike around, that maybe one of the best jobs out there, look for it at your local job posting. (or craiglist)

I know my friend does this all the time as he’s crazy about bikes but if you are too, it might save you a bunch of money for the future if you learn these skills.

Bike Hack – How to Add a Stepper Motor Powered LED Light!

I’ve seen a ton of bike lights that use the power of pedaling to provide bikers with nice array of lights as they drive down the road. Well, here’s another awesome bike hack that shows you how to add a stepper motor-powered LED light. I really like this one as I do actually have a bunch of unused stepper motors laying around. (and I am sure you do too if you hack around a bit…)

Steppers come with different resolutions. Virtually all steppers are either 1.8° or 7.5° per step; (200 steps or 48 steps per revolution) the difference can be felt easily if you turn the spindle by hand. The 1.8° ones are obviously better for generating at really low revs, but also ‘top out’ lower. The coils in steppers have a relatively large inductance, and beyond a certain speed the output frequency gets so high that the impedance of the coils starts to become significant and limits the current. When making a stepper based generator, you need to keep the motor speed to around a couple of hundred revs per minute – something like the normal speed of a bicycle wheel.

WOW, I’ve seen a handful of great electric motorcycles in the past few years but this is the first electric “Sports Bike” that I have seen.

What is more amazing is that this is a by-product of a 22-year old college student, who has built more amazing electric bike than a whole team of engineers at Kawasaki.

Kudos for such a great job on the bike and design too.

And yes, you can learn how to ride a motorcycle here too.

Two months. That’s all the time a 22-year-old college kid who spent his school days drawing fast cars needed to build one off the coolest electric motorcycles we’ve ever seen. It’s enough to make us want to slap all the grade school teachers who ever told us to quit doodling during social studies.

Tom Miceli built the Ion during his final year at Appalachian State University. He studied industrial design, and his senior project required him to create something that reflected all he’d learned. Given his love for getting from Point A to Point C while passing Point B in a blur, his choice for a project was a no-brainer.

“I wanted something eco-friendly that didn’t sacrifice performance,” Miceli told Wired.com.

It seems strange that nobody has come up with this idea before now, especially as there are plenty of cyclists out there these days. The idea is simple enough, to build a trailer home that is small and light enough for a cyclist to tow.

Obviously, things are going to be a little cramped inside as everything is included inside and has to be made so that it is compact, light and can be easily stored away. This trailer home actually weighs just a hundred pounds and so can be easily towed behind a bike.

Sometimes you get a couple where one likes a bike while the other likes a car. Often this has ended up in disastrous consequences. But now that would seem to have to be the case, as some genius has come up with the bike and car combination.

Naturally, this comes from Italy, it is the only place where something like this could have been thought up and then built. What would be even better, is if this was able to be separated and driven independently of each other, I am just being a bit picky there aren’t I?

I am not really sure what the point of gathering data on a motorcycle would be for, (as I rather just go really fast) but you can surely make one of these motorcycle control panel from Arduino and gather data for fine-tuning your motorcycle.

Hey, I’m really pleased with how this is going. This is still a prototype but it’s functionally complete and works very well. It’s messy because I hacked up a generalized arduino proto-shield to mount it but there’s really not a lot to the hardware and now that it’s working I can refine it to something much smaller and neater. The functions that are there at the moment are speedo, tach, and gear indicator the speedo and tach are dead accurate and the gear indicator responds very crisply to shifting up or down.

Bixi is the bike sharing scheme that uses technology to keep track of the bikes, they have a computer chip on board, are solar powered and of course are Wi-Fi enabled, although they are an average looking bike the shape and colour means that it would hard to steal one of these bikes and get away with it.

The bikes are fitted with LED lights to the front and rear, these save power but have been found to be brighter than a conventional bike light. Montreal is the first city to get this scheme where will it pop up next?

It is ok Google driving around the wide roads and highways of the USA, but in Europe, it is a different matter, with winding roads that a car simply cannot navigate. So what now for Google Street View?

Well they simply do not give up, when the car fails to get the desired results then a bike could do the job, it may twenty years to cover Europe but they will get there in the end. I just cannot wait for the human Google Street View camera for those lanes that even a bike cannot travel down.

Here’s a cool Eye Lamp that will open up as it sees human presence. (or animals too for that matter)

I do like it but it’s still a design, here’s a bunch more eye lamps you can buy though:

Eye Plasma Lamp is a good one for your livingroom, get bunch of these and turn all the lights off, that will be creepy!

Hella Eye Truck Lamp is great for brightening up your vehicle, I think you can put this on some import cars too.

Biker’s eye lamp is obviously a good choice for bikers who need that special, unique way to deter bad drivers.

Here’s a simple picture of how much space that cars, bus, and bikes take in comparison to the number of people using it. I have to say they should add skateboards, which should definitely come on top for the most eco-friendliest vehicle.

In this image, you can see three interpretations of what it takes to get the same amount of people into town for work, shopping or for whatever reason they would need to travel. They have chosen three modes of travel, car, bus and cycle, this picture says it all.

I do remember giving up on my bike while going to college, simply due to the fact that Police in Davis are not as bike-friendly. (Davis, California is one of the only cities in California that forces you to get a BIKE PERMIT otherwise you can easily get a BIKE parking ticket. What a bunch of jokes, that’s why I started skateboarding after receiving my first bike parking ticket for $40, no more biking there. Fu** the David Police and the City Officials who made those stupid laws that don’t help skateboarders. I know being a bike-friendly city is great but it’s not when all the students are paying for the ticket. I am glad that police in San Francisco have better things to do than go after bikes.)

Enough of my past history, here’s how to make a “waterproof” bike seat cover that resembles a condom. (and probably get more chicks’ attention too)

During the Fall semester I started riding my bike to school and learned I hated riding in the rain after a seven hour class. I dreaded the idea of riding in the rain with a wet bike seat causing me to stand while pedaling. Luckily, being surrounded by Low density polyethylene (LDPE) cutoffs in the studio I began experimenting with vacuum forming this material to create a reusable bicycle seat cover that is durable, flexible, and waterproof.

Most of us have heard of those cycle schemes that can be found in some of the larger cities, they work well so long as you do not mind riding a bike. However, in New South Wales, Australia, they have come up a cool scooter sharing scheme that is a bit more like it.

The Link Urban Scooter Scheme works just like a bike sharing scheme, except the hubs don’t take up as much room as the cycle hubs because they are fixed to lamp posts, this is where they get the power from. This idea is good for younger people as it is a fast and easy way of getting around.

This isn’t the best bike rack hack I have ever saw but it’s still worthy of a blog post. You can easily hack your bike rack to hold more weight by re-using old pieces of metal and wires as shown in the picture.

Random piece of metal + bailing wire = not only a great way to support the milk-crate carryall, but also a great hack! Simple, cheap, effective…I like.

When I used to go to middle school about 20 years ago, I used to have a rack for my alto saxophone I’d carry to school. It was very heavy and the ropes made my bike look like a bike SUV. (if there’s such a thing)

Anyways, here’s a cool bicycle DIY on how to make a cargo trailer for your bike, sorta like motorcycles.

The front half is an old 26er mtb frame that I had been using as an errand/beater bike. The back half is a 29er mtb frame that I had purchased online a couple years ago… it showed up with a bad head tube/down tube weld. When I talked to the shop about getting a new one, they told me to make the frame un-rideable and email them pics. Once they saw that I destroyed the frame, they’d send me a new one.

The two frames are held together at two attachment points: a 127.5mm spindle BB (w/ some washers) in the rear frame is bolted into the rear dropouts of the front frame. Two 3/4″ pieces of 6063-T52 aluminum tubing are bolted to the rear frame (through the seat tube and seatpost) and then attach to the front frame (via half an old stem bolted to the front bike’s seatpost with a 28.6-27.2 seatpost shim).

I have to admit during my stay in South Korea, I probably saw more DIY tractors/moving creations than I have ever did in my life but here’s a bunch of DIY tractors from Poland.

I have seen this one too before, a motorcycle hooked up to a tractor, it’s a good, cheap way to farm.

Since 2005 Łukasz Skąpski has been traveling all over Poland to document the story of the tractors hand-constructed by farmers. He also made a video where farmers talk fondly about their machines, how it goes faster than it is allowed, how they can drive very steep roads with it and how robust the vehicle is. Considered that somewere built decades ago most of them look like little marvels.

This is a great idea for people who want pimp their bike but do not actually want to go too far as to make their bike look like that it has been used for a carnival of something. These lights are actually fixed onto the spokes of the wheel and provide fantastic light effects but only when the light is dull enough to make the effect worthwhile.

They are made by Monkey Electric and have been names Monkey Lights, they are in fact self contained units of thirty two coloured LED’s the lighting effect is already pre-programmed into each device to produce the light effect. The power comes from three AA batteries that are placed in the units control box.

The bike chair shown above is made using recycled chromed steel rims. It was recently featured on Forever Geek, which is where i happen to stumble upon the modern design (and eco) beauty. As you know re-purposed furniture and accessories is my fave type of green item. This one ranks right up there with the best of them.

I have to say that although I’ve seen slew of electric bikes on the market these days, this homemade electric trike is probably the one I would want to get or build at the least.

It looks pretty simple enough to build as you can see above with 2 batteries, fuse, switches, bunch of wires, and what looks like a control unit of some sort for the motors.

Here’s the parts list:

This part of the project was a strange mixture of quality and last minute bodging.

- I used two 12v 32amp batteries
- A 75amp 24V speed controller made by 4QD in England- quite pricey but really reliable
- 5 LED battery condition meter
- Plunger pot for throttle
- Lots of cable
- Connectors for batteries
- Two 24v 300W DC motors

This is probably the best bike mod I have seen in awhile, someone figured out how to make a Leaf Blower Powered Bike! It will definitely make some noise but great for city commuting and getting that anger out of you into the streets.

This was one of those projects I couldn’t get out of my head. I had seen, on the internet and in person, the small 2-stroke engine powered scooters which were becoming increasingly popular. Naturally I wanted one, but I’m not the type that would just buy a commercially available scooter that will work well and last for years and be happy about it: I would have to build my own.

New Years event in New York City Times Square “next” year, will be powered in part by pedals by humans.

How cool is that? Save earth.

Duracell has set up a “power lodge” in Times Square where visitors are ushered to a row of bicycles with generators connected to a set of massive batteries.

So far the project has collected 95 hours of pedal power, or about 35 percent of the total needed, Iverson told Reuters.

The power is generated from old-fashioned rotary technology — pedal power and spinning wheels.

“We estimate our goal is to get 230 hours of people doing the cycle over the course of December and then we will have enough charge in the batteries for at least 10 to 15 minutes during the live telecast,” said Iverson.

For those of us traveling by non-motorized conveyance (bicycle e.g.), visibility is important in both forenoon and post-twilight conditions. The best way to ensure such visibility is through the use of excessively bright lights, of which the latest light emitting diodes (LEDs) are the acme. The following account will detail the process of building an LED based head-light capable of of more than 500 lumens of output using about 6W of electrical power. For comparison, this is the same output as a typical 45W halogen bulb.
