Al Linke, the creator of the DIY Magic Mirror, has just buzzed me on his cool Magic Mirror, which was featured on Instructables as winner of the Halloween contest.

Well, I don’t know how I missed it if it was on Instructables but here it is and Al is actually selling kits you can buy to make a magic mirror yourself.

I have to say, this is really cool stuff, I think I have seen something similar, the Magic Message mirror but this one beats it hands-off as far as using it for different DIY projects is concerned.

You supply the PC, monitor, picture frame, and choose which sensors to use. Build the Magic Mirror Sensor Hub yourself by purchasing this hardware and following these instructions or buy one pre-built. Then plug it into a PC USB port and install the DIY Magic Mirror Software.

Are you suffering from athlete’s foot? The symptoms may never go away unless you treat it right.

For one, you should be trying to get out of your shoes whenever possible to let your foot breath. If you sit in a cubicle all day, you are prone to “grow” your athlete’s foot until it gets too ugly.

Second, try “peeing” urine on your foot while in the shower. Urine has acidic liquids that will kill the germs in athlete’s foot. I know, it sounds stupid and I thought the same thing too until I started regularly “peeing” on my foot, and my God, my athlete’s foot has vanished!

It was actually an advice from one of my redneck friends and have to say it’s a life saver.

Of course, you will have to keep urinating on yourself until you are completely cured so don’t forget to pee on your foot when you shower!

This is probably the best bike mod I have seen in awhile, someone figured out how to make a Leaf Blower Powered Bike! It will definitely make some noise but great for city commuting and getting that anger out of you into the streets.

This was one of those projects I couldn’t get out of my head. I had seen, on the internet and in person, the small 2-stroke engine powered scooters which were becoming increasingly popular. Naturally I wanted one, but I’m not the type that would just buy a commercially available scooter that will work well and last for years and be happy about it: I would have to build my own.

Wow, check out this man who’ve had a hand transplant after 35 years of non-use on his amputated arm. I am still amazed at the fact the hand transplant itself was successful, I dearly hope for every amputated person to get their arms/legs back through transplants.

When Savage had both hands, part of his right brain responded to his left hand, and a corresponding part of his left brain responded to his right hand. After the amputation, that same part of his left brain would have been sensory-deprived and thus ready to adopt duties of adjacent sensory areas, such as those for the right arm and possibly his face.

Much animal and human research has documented that such neural reorganization begins within hours of limb loss or debilitation…

“It’s remarkable that an original neural pathway for the hand can be reinstated after years and years,” (Vanderbilt University neuroscientist Jon) Kaas says.

Remember my Green Laser Projectr DIY? Well, here’s a similar DIY project except it uses a speaker to send vibrating pulses to the end-results beams instead of a motor.

So how does one go about making one of these things? Well, I made every effort to make construction as simple as possible for two reasons. One, electrical engineering is far from my speciality and I didn’t want to kill myself/ruin a laser I could only afford one of. Two, I always hated seeing incredibly awesome projects on the internet that I never had any hope of building due to funds and bizarre parts. That’s not to say you don’t need some basic soldering and construction skills, as well as a healthy respect for the power of laser light, but it’s definitely doable if you put your mind to it.

Wow, check out this Jacobs Ladder too!

This is how I used a neon sign transformer to create my own classic sci-fi prop the Jacobs Ladder. A Jacobs Ladder is nothing more than two vertical wires attached to a very high voltage. The wires which form the ladder are close together at the base but diverge as they go up. When switched on an electric arc forms at the base of the wires. The arc heats the air above it and in doing so forms an easier path for the electricity to take. The arc moves upwards continually heating the air above itself and rising to take the easier path until eventually the arc reaches the end of the wires and leaps into the air. Once free of the wires it dies but a new arc starts again at the bottom of the ladder. The arc itself moves with a very distinctive buzzing noise. These devices are most usually seen in old sci-fi and horror films and the houses of strange people.

Here’s a cool DIY on making your very own Jacobs Ladder. I always goto Fry’s with my friend Eric and find that they have this giant Jacobs Ladder that’d go off as soon as you were about to touch motherboards and whatnot. But this is great that now I know how it’s made.

The basic construction and principle of a Jacobs ladder is that a metal vee is formed from two bits of wire and a high voltage is applied across them. The electricity arcs across at the bottom of the vee where the electrodes are closest together. The air that the spark is passing through is ionised making it a preffered route for the arc, so when it heats up and begins to rise it drags the arc up the metal vee pulling it wider as it goes. In a correctly set up ladder the arc will travel all the way to the top where the wires have a sharp outward bend in them to pull the arc apart to the point that it extinguishes and the whole process starts again at the bottom of the vee. Here’s a picture of the base of my own Jacobs ladder showing the mounting of the wires.

Basically this little device produces HHO and feeds it into your fuel line in your car. The HHO is produced by distilled water and baking soda. The only drawback is that you much keep adding the distilled water and baking soda once a week.

This is a very good idea. I’ve heard of water injection systems but this one actually injects HHO.

Looks pretty cool to me, has anyone tried it yet?

Check out this cool Multi-Touch Multimedia device. This could be a cool combination of touch, sound, and video for future video game controls.

MultiTouch is the ability of an input controller to detect multiple fingers simultaneously. Multitouch input devices are just starting to be seen in the real world, rather than just in the movies (the most famous being “Minority Report”). MAKE magazine has even declared them the The Future of Interfaces.

For Maker Faire 2007, I propose to demonstrate a variety of graphical, musical, video, and browser-based applications that I’ve developed that show some of the unique capabilities of use of MultiTouch controllers. Below is a picture of the custom controller I’ve built containing 3 Fingerworks iGesture pads (each capable of detecting multiple fingers simultaneously with excellent resolution and responsiveness), and a JLCooper CS32 with lots of sliders and buttons for additional control.

I was at work trying to draw some stuff and Garrett came over with his USB Hid Portal device and plugged it into my USB hub (which was annoying at first) then suddenly my mouse started making circles on its own! So we decided to call this the USB Mouse Prank Device… There’s really no howto on this but you can check out Garrett’s past USB projects such as:

Physicists figured out the complex mathematical equations for making objects invisible by bending light around them last year.

A group of engineers at Purdue University in Indiana have now used those calculations to design a relatively simple device that ought to be able to—one day soon—make objects as big as an airplane simply disappear.

Wow, check out this awesome window shade that also acts as a solar powered light!

This is a continuation of a project from Design for the 5 Senses that I worked on with Michael Jefferson and Jae In Lee. It’s a window shade that doubles as a light. One set of strings would be to control the level of sunlight by adjusting the height of the shade. The other set of strings controls the light level. I didn’t have time to add a solar component to it for that class, so I decided to work on this for Advanced Tech. There is some general “design” info here and a list of resources, but this page is mainly tech documentation of the solar component. DIY HACK – How to make your own Metal Detector!

I’ve noticed many people using metal detectors on the beach lately to find treasures or junk but here’s a great way to make one of those yourself!

BFO ( beat frequency oscillator ) metal detectors use two oscillators, each of which produces a radio frequency. One of these oscillators uses a coil of wire that we call the search loop. The second oscillator uses a much smaller coil of wire, and is usually inside the control box and is called the reference oscillator. By adjusting the oscillators so their frequencies are very nearly the same, the difference between them is made audible as a beat note, this beat note changes slightly when the search loop is moved over or near to a piece of metal. It has been found in practice best to make the search oscillator fixed say at 100khz and to arrange for the reference oscillator to be adjustable 100khz plus or minus 250hz. This gives a beat note of 250hz to 0 to 250hz. The beat note disappears or nulls when the two oscillators are about equal. This type of detector is most sensitive when the beat note is close to zero, about 5hz ( motor boating ) any slight change being noticeable.

This means the 2.1-inch panel will look sharp regardless of whether you’re in a dark room or out in direct sunlight. Samsung calls the new technology Automatic Brightness Adjustment. The QVGA display will also use 20&ndash30 percent less power than other screens its size. It’s expected to hit production the second half of this year.

Cool, Samsung is making some new USB monitors. I wonder if they are going to be powered by USB. Probably not at 5V… But it’d be cool if you could daisy link couple USB monitors together using some USB cables…

Samsung has introduced what it claims is the world’s first USB-connected display, which also needs no graphics card.

The UbiSync LCD monitor has a 19-inch 1280-by-1024 screen that uses a software graphics adapter which it downloads to the PC when it is plugged into a USB 2.0 port.

Samsung senior vice president Ha Yoon-ho suggested that UbiSync would be ideal for laptop users wanting a second display, and for workers who need multiple PC screens. It includes a four-port USB hub, so up to five monitors can be connected via a single USB port on the PC.

From the 1950’s until about 1970, nixies were a dominant display technology. “NIXIE” is actually a brand name for display tubes made by Burroughs, and the proper generic name might be “cold cathode neon readout tube.” However, as with facial tissue, a single short word involving the letter ‘X’ had more widespread appeal. Whatever you call it, they were used in all manner of electronic instruments that needed to display numerical data until they were ultimately made obsolete by the introduction of LEDs. One of the common places that you can find nixie tubes is in old scientific instruments, like this old HP 5321B frequency counter which has been converted into a clock. (It’s 10:53:49 PM.)

Wow, check out this guy who hacked a wireless detector to vibrate whenever he was near wireless networks.

This project is for a small electronic unit that allows the user to sense the presence and relative signal strength of wireless hotspots. It can be worn as a pendant or carried in a pocket. A team of students at the University of Waterloo, lead by William Lam (no relation to our Brian Lam), have designed a touchscreen Smart Mirror. Widgets can be placed on the mirror and it can also play music, video and more. Check out the video above and see for yourself.

Wow, check out this cool audio spectrum analyzer you can make using an Atmel AVR MCU! Well, I’ve always wanted to make one of these but finally found it at HackedGadgets!

This is an experimental work to monitor a spectrum pattern in radio band, and is a continuous project from Audio Spectrum Monitor. To analyze the spectrum of an input signal, I chose an Atmel AVR microcontroller that used in the Audio Spectrum Monitor to process FFT. When think it easy, it can be thought that sample an input RF signal directly and analyze it will do. However, you will able to recoginize that there are some techinical difficulties from following reasons.

Ooooohhhh, check out this cool LED POV! You can do current time, signs, and more! Nicely done!

From the pictures you can see there’s a motor on the rotor shaft (with the blue housing), and an additional one below the mounting plate. The first motor turned out have too little power to give the rotor enough speed. So I added another motor and a gear, and put stream line wings on the LED bar. The first motor had the rotary encoder attached, so I left it where it was. The second motor came from a tyre pump that runs from a car cigarette lighter outlet. When I first connected the motor to a 6V lead acid battery, it drew 20 amperes and the rotor almost took off like a helicopter! I figured the motor would run hot in less than a minute and burn out. 6 volts, 20 amperes, that gives you 120 watts! So now it’s running from a power supply on a 3 A current limit, and the supply voltage is around 3 volts.

I am very bad with 3D Stereograms, but here’s a site I used to make the one shown above. I know what it says, but just can’t see it. Can you guess what it is?

Ok I’ll admit it this website has little technical value but in the course of another project it stumbled its way into my lap and is worth passing along. According to the numbers 85 – 90% of all people cannot view a sterogram which is what this website creates. I used to be in the group of people who could not seem to view it. Not wanted to be in some sort of inferior seeing group I practices using the methods below and with a little bit of coaxing from this website I can now see the 3D images created by a Sterogram. Thank you Flash-Gear lol.
