There’s a slew of great USB motion controllers now on the market you can buy but for those of you hackers and DIYers who enjoy the challenge of making one, go ahead and refer to this site on how to make your own DIY USB motion controller. (Of course, don’t forget we made one couple years back before the days of Wii)

This is the schematics for a PIC USB gamepad that I have built in a steering wheel shell. The code for the firmware was written in PicBasic Pro and it implements a HID USB device with 2 axes and 4 buttons (only 2 buttons connected in the prototype). The device is detected by Windows XP/Vista as a standard USB gamepad and can be used with many games and applications.

Pac Man is back

As child, I always wanted a Scalextric and of course, it was never to be, naturally, my little brother did get one and you know what I was glad that I did not.

It was a tiny figure of eight track and the cars kept flying off the track on the bends.

However, James May from the BBC’s Top Gear show has built a serious Scalextric track in fact his attempt could actually break the world record.

Here’s some great news for Xbox 360 hackers who have been “banned” from modding your Xbox. Sorta complex but I guess it’s doable to unban your Xbox 360.

The new workaround, dubbed iXtreme LT (Light Touch) aims to provide a minimum amount of security checks and aims to make the firmware as close to the stock firmware as possible to prevent detection. This fix may allow modified consoles to return to playing backup discs and other forbidden materials without Microsoft noticing.

For those of you looking to connect bluetooth devices to your Nintendo DS (for whatever reason), there IS a way. It’s not easy but you can do it following this great articles on how to make a DS Bluetooth adaptor.

In our design, we use a tiny ATmega168 microcontroller to make the Nintendo DS speak to the RN-41 Bluetooth SMD module by Roving Networks. Using this piece of hardware the Nintendo DS can scan its neighbourhood and establish connections to other Bluetooth devices (supporting SPP). The module can also be remotely connected to, allowing for a range of interesting applications. We also developed a software library for the Nintendo DS, making it easy to use this new Bluetooth interface.

Call me a gambler but I think the world would have much more incentive to recycle if we had more of these recycling arcade games in every block of every city in the world.

Even better, I’d say legalize gambling legal just for these recycling arcade games except that you can only use recyclable bottles and cans as money. (but win money if you hit jackpot)

I think it’s a safe bet since most casinos do take the money, I don’t see how the government could lose.

Of course, with the amount of politics involved, this might not be possible but indeed would make recycling a whole lot more efficient and fun.

Even those who are broke from gambling in real casinos can collect cans/bottles to try again, perhaps win jackpot and another life.

That why this has been created, its uses a similar principle as an EEG, apparently as you relax your are able to control the streams of air and move the ball, yeah right!

The PS3 controller in wood

There is something about wood that changes the concept of most things that it graces, such as this PS3 controller from Singibigi, the Joytron is certainly that made from a veneer covered wood board this controller certainly makes a difference from all of that plastic. It is a shame that they do not make a case for the PS3 out of the same the material at least then it would all match up.

Here’s a video of DIY motion-sensing cue-ball video game from back in 1990! That’s almost 20 years ago and way before Nintendo Wii ever became popular, nevermind we didn’t have 32-bit processors for video games then.

the middle section of the video reveals the trick behind it all, and it turns out to be surprisingly simple. No complex sensors or computer vision algorithms; the ball’s speed and direction are calculated by an 8-bit processor and a clever arrangement of four infrared emitter/detector pairs.

Thinking about a great birthday gift? Well, recently I bought one of my friends a Nintendo DSi for their birthday, it features a ton of great games and fun things like being able to maneuver photos with it’s on-board dual digital cameras. (That’s right, there’s TWO!)

The most noticeable feature of the slim Nintendo DSi system are its two cameras – one camera is situated on the external body pointing away from the user, and the second one points at the user when the device is flipped open. As the first truly interactive digital camera in a video game system, the DSi Cameras feature 10 different interactive “lenses” that can manipulate your photos, offering an easy way to take and share your photos with family and friends. The cameras also present people with unprecedented ways to interact with their games, and in the process provide developers with a new tool to devise creative games and experiences. If the touch screen gave Nintendo DS a sense of feel and the microphone allowed it to hear, the two cameras give Nintendo DSi the sense of sight.

I am not much of a Nintendo addict other than messing around with my Wii, but if you know someone who enjoys gadgets, this might just be the perfect birthday gift.

The Nintendo DSi can also wirelessly connect to the internet easily and lets you upload photos/videos to social networking sites like Twitter. I have to give Nintendo kudos for trying to implement Web 2.0 into their gaming devices. It seems more and more companies are getting in this market of a multi-media devices including digital photo frame companies.

The new DSi does has its downfalls though like not being able to play Gameboy games like its younger brother DS.

Perhaps the biggest and most notable difference is that the DSi no longer has a slot to play Gameboy Advance games. If you’re still playing your GBA games a lot, this is probably a pretty big subtraction when it comes to the DSi, no matter how much it includes. If you’re someone who hasn’t used your DS for playing GBA games in a while, it’s probably not a big deal, but I would’ve gladly taken a slightly thicker handheld just to maintain the GBA slot. There is, however, a slot for an SD card to store more data. The first of these is the wi-fi service which you can get on and download some downloadable games for the DSi. Much like the Wii, you’ll spend points (100 points is equal to one dollar) to buy games. There’s also the built in web browser, but this is not something to jump up and down over really, as it isn’t a very good web browser.

P.S. Of course, don’t forget that you can always dissect your brand new Nintendo DSi and put it together to void warranty and add some hacking fun. Also refer to the solar powered Nintendo DS if you want to do that too. (Shouldn’t be too different on the DSi versus DS anyways…)

Here’s a great way to add your own DIY NES arcade machine to your home, make one yourself!

Inside is an old PC and a 17″ LCD monitor. The back of the cabinet has two USB ports and two NES controller ports. You can connect regular, un-modded NES controllers and play with those or use the joystick and buttons on the control panel.

The front end is a simple VB program that auto loads when the PC boots. You never need to connect a mouse or keyboard to load your games. The VB program gives a list of games installed. Using the joystick, you can select the game you want to play.
