Parrallel Wind Turbine!

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Design, Earth, Educational, Energy, Gadgets, Industrial, Motor by max on the May 15th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

Check out this awesome parrallel wind turbine that can generate easy 200 watts at 20mph wind!  Pretty simple concept but well executed with patent pending too.

An easy 200 watts in about a 20 mph wind or so, lighting the four 50 watt car
headlight bulbs you see at Doug’s feet. We get much more power than this in
higher winds. This kind of power output is unheard of for an 18″ diameter
horizontal axis windmill! – the secret? Multi-Rotor technology, made possible
by the strength of modern carbon fiber materials.
This rotor is really thirteen rotors harnessed as one, giving an order of
magnitude (~10 times) more power than a single rotor design of the same diameter.
In stronger winds this prototype blows out these lights like flashbulbs - poof!

Solar Powered Underwear!

Triumph, a world class lingerie company out of Japan, has just introduced a new solar powered bra that displays messages with the power of the sun. This must be for promoting companies not for consumers. Neverthless, it’s a cool device indeed for men who watch the women who wear it.

The world famous bra company Triumph have come up with a revolutionary new type of bra. This is solar powered, which means that it stores up energy and can be used to send messages out on the small digital display that is placed in the middle of the cups.

How to run your car on Water, Sugar, and Yeast using EFuel100’s Home Ethanol!

Posted in Auto, Cars, Consumer, Cool, Earth, Educational, Energy, Gadgets, News, Video by max on the May 11th, 2008 at 9:09 pm

How to run your car on Water, Sugar, and Yeast using MicroFueler\'s Home Ethanol!

EFuel100, a home ethanol convertor, has been buzzing all around the world and TV. Basically it allows you to turn water, sugar, and yeast into ethanol. What do you do with ethanol? You can mix 75% ethanol and 25% gas to power your current vehicle.

That’s right, it means you don’t need to drive an eco-friendly car to save the world. You simply need to pre-order one of these ethanol convertors at $10,000 USD, but don’t worry, the government will give you some tax breaks.

Here’s a video by the CEO Tom Quinn explains the history behind his creation and passion:

Basically, you add some water, sugar, and yeast, let it sit for a few days and you’ve got ethanol that you can use to power your car. The Micro Fueler can also take alcohol, and co-founder Thomas Quinn says he sometimes makes ethanol from discarded alcohol picked up from bars and restaurants.

Between supplies and electricity, it costs about $1 to produce a gallon of ethanol. But the up front costs are a bit higher than that. A Micro Fueler will set you back about $10,000, although with government subsidies, you can probably chop a few thousand dollars off that price.

Radio Charged by Hand Cranking or the Sun!

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Earth, Energy, Gadgets by max on the May 11th, 2008 at 9:38 am

Radio Charged by Hand or Sun!

Here’s a cool eco-friendly radio that can be charged by cranking or via the UV-rays.

This radio has its own rechargeable batteries, these can be charged by using the solar panel, but if this is not available for any reason, but if the sun low or you were in a shaded area, then solar would not work. Luckily it has a hand cranking device which can charge up the batteries using the internal dynamo.

DragonLasers Spartan 250mW Green Laser Reviewed! DragonLasers Spartan 250mW Green Laser Reviewed!2

(During the day killing a bug in my shoe and in my dark bathroom)

Remember I did a review on a 125mW Viper green laser last year?

Well Frank from DragonLasers sent me a Spartan GW 250mW green laser so I can show you guys how cool it is. The beam is much bigger this time and as you can see in the video, it’s WAY more powerful. Everytime my friends come over, they are hogging me to get them a free green laser. It’s really something you don’t need but once you see one in real life, you need it.

Nevada Lightning Laboratory Lightning demo at Maker Faire 2008!

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Earth, Educational, Energy, Entertainment, Industrial, Maker Faire, Shows, lights by max on the May 6th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

Well, these guys were at Maker Faire last year but I missed their show everytime since I had a Maker booth.

This year, I got the whole footage on tape:

Enjoy~

Btw, you can find more information about these super-gigantic tesla coils over at Lod.org.

Boy, these things are way cool, maybe there’s more uses for it than simply a show. Perhaps, power my back-to-the-future vehicle, De Lorean. (speaking of which, I heard they were going to sell them again soon…)

Here’s an excerpt from their website:

In 1998, LOD designed, constructed and commissioned the Electrum Project, a privately-owned lightning sculpture in New Zealand. Electrum provided a “real world test-bed” for the computer-based design methods needed to approach a large-scale coil design. Electrum’s spacious top electrode also allowed a unique opportunity to measure in detail the intricate dynamics of the streamer discharges — by enclosing a human observer inside the sphere, armed with test equipment.

In 2003, LOD completed the second Conceptual Design [CD2], using the test data and experience gained from the Electrum Project. The CD2 makes several optimizations to the tower and top electrode geometry, and incorporates recent technological improvements in the primary drive circuitry. In the CD2 each tower is now 122 feet high and features shielded observation areas for experimenters inside each top electrode.

Crank MP3 from Japan!

Crank MP3 from Japan!

Crank MP3 from Japan!2

Crank MP3 from Japan!3

Here’s a cool lookin’ MP3 you can crank to re-charge the battery.  Crank for about 10 minutes and you get 50 minutes of playing power.  Of course, the MP3 can also be re-charged via USB.   Now, THIS is what iPod  needs, ability to crank it up.

Sure, you can sit on the train and twiddle your crank but to save you from such embarrassing moments, this does allow for recharge via USB. It takes approximately 2.5 hours to get a full-charge but if you insist on cranking, it will take about 10 minutes at 2.5 rotations / second to give you the equivalent recharge of 50 minutes via USB.

Wind Power to power your gadgets!

Posted in Consumer, Earth, Energy, Gadgets by max on the April 28th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

Wind Power to power your gadgets!

Here’s a cool gadget called HyMini that will wind power to re-charge your gadgets.  Although it’s a hefty price to pay at $50, it probably beats building one yourself.  (You could make one for about $20 for sure.)  They did overprice this thing probably for the design.  If they mass-produced it in the near future, it should only cost you around 5 bucks.

If you drive to work on the highway a lot, this might come in handy as you can simply hang it out your window for some nice 80mph wind power.

There’s also an option to use solar power too, which is way too cool.

HYmini is a handheld, universal charger/adapter device that harnesses renewable wind power / solar power and conventional wall plug power to recharge almost all your 5V digital gadgets.

Top 10 Eco-Friendly and Green Gadgets!

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Earth, Energy, Gadgets, Household, Solar by max on the April 23rd, 2008 at 6:59 am

Hi All,

I must have had my watch set to a day earlier, Earth Day was yesterday but I figured 1 day late is never too late for eco-friendly gadgets.

So here’s a round-up of various different eco-friendly and green gadgets you can buy to save the world:

solaralarm

Solar Alarm Clock - Great stuff, they should make all alarm clocks with a solar panel. How hard is that? Probably not that hard, look at all the caculators made today, they come with a solar panel. I think it’s just a simple matter of “thinking” by engineers. (Yes, engineers should really focus on making the environment better too, not just numbers…)

solar-powered-usb-bikini

Solar Powered USB Bikini - This is great stuff, more celebrities like Pamela Anderson should promote solar-powered bikinis. (Think of how many hot girls would do the same…)

Recycled Bike Chain Clock

Recycled Bike Chain Clock - At $20, you can beat any other recycled bike chain clock out there, if there is any… Now, if you can make this thing solar powered by adding a small solar cell hacked off a calculator, it will complete the masterpiece.

Recycled partbs bike

Recycled Parts Collector’s Motorcycle - As a motor-head myself constantly trying to go fast on my 2007 GSX-R600, this one is a thing of beauty, simply priceless…

via Make

solar-cooker

Satellite Solar Cooker - This one is classic, you could probably cook almost anything as long as you have sunlight.

solar-skateboard

Solar skateboard - Wow, I love finding new inventions that people invent through Google Patent Search, this one is my favorite.

Solar Fan Cap/Baseball Hat

Solar Cap - Make sure to get one of these for your next ball game for sheezy.

solar-powered-jackets

Solar Power Cells for your jacket - You can now convert your jacket into a “solar-powered” jacket simply by lugging this device and re-charge all your daily gadgets such as cellphone, iPod, etc…etc…

via Engadget

solar-roof-1solar-roof-2

Solar Roof - That’s right, if you own a home, it’s time to get that Photovoltaic energy from your new Solar Roof. If you can afford it and you don’t have it, it’s time to serious think about getting one…

solar-laptop-charger

Solar Laptop Charger - Ha, this one is basically a gigantic collection of solar cells but hey, you can power your laptop using the sun’s energy. It’s a must if you are thinking about heading out to the desert and go camping. Make sure to bring a broadband card with you too so you can access the internet or use a blackberry as a broadband modem like me.

Yey, that completes our plethora of gadgets dedicated to the Earth day and making our Earth more green.

You can also check out the “Earth” section for more eco-friendly related articles on Zedomax.com or also check out “Gadgets” section over at Keetsa.com, our sister blog that focuses only on eco-friendly and green.
