RoofRay lets you calculate your home’s Solar Power potential!

RoofRay lets you calculate your home\'s Solar Power potential!

RoofRay is a site that let’s you calculate your home’s solar power potential using the power of GoogleMaps.

It’s very interesting as the site will caculate the solar power potential based on the roof area and the slope of the roof.

It’s probably pretty accurate as most data is using direct satellite images off GoogleMaps.

The greatest part about this site is that you can find out how much energy you will be able to make with new solar power cells.  Then you calculate how much it is to install new solar panels on your roof to see how long it will take you to payoff the panels itself.

The RoofRay site allows you to specify location, size and slope of your roof via Google Maps. It then uses this info to estimate how much energy can be generated from your available exposure.

Human Powered Mobile River Gyms for New York!

Human Powered Mobile River Gyms for New York!

Here’s a really cool mobile gym concept that might actually be a good idea for most metropolitan cities with rivers.    It’s a human-powered mobile river gym, all powered by people exercising in it.

What if you took every single calorie generated by people working out in New York City and put it to use like this?

You’d probably have a really great public transportation, just watch out for sweaty balls.

The River Gyms are, in essence, floating gyms designed to provide health amenities while floating along the Hudson and East rivers. Each gym is programed with a specific path set on a 15 minute loop moving from one point to the next. This means that each one of these devices can function both as a gym with a view and as a transportation system.

The design won the third place in New York Magazine’s 2005 Create a Gym competition, and it is certainly easy to see the appeal of one of these. Obviously, while the design proposal was specific for New York, pretty much any city with access to a river could be filled with these gyms.

Electric Bike with Automatic 8-Speed Transmission!

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Earth, Educational, Energy, Entertainment, Gadgets, bikes by max on the July 23rd, 2008 at 2:02 pm

If you thought you could have it all, this electric bike with 8-speed automatic transmission might be the way to commute your way to work.

This is the electric bicycle that uses automatic transmission to downshift into a lower gear when it senses a hill, upshifts for rapid acceleration up to 20 mph on flats, or allows you to pedal normally because the motor can be disengaged at your command. Powered by a 750-watt electric motor housed in the horizontal chain and motor assembly that provides 1 hp, the 8-speed automatic transmission is capable of four modes of operation, all controlled by a thumb toggle on the handlebars: a setting for rapid acceleration, a low gear setting for inclines (but slower acceleration), and a setting for manual gear shifting that disengages the motor to preserve battery life.

Here’s a cool solar powered called, Hyperbike, that is very solar-efficient.

Hyperbike was presented in Vienna at the Forschungsforum chaired by the Austrian Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology. The following video features the show bike, where the solar panel charges the supercaps. Measurements have validated that 8 supercaps (EDLC) with only 176 grams are sufficient to accelerate from still stand.
