Check out this awesome hack that involves a handheld flame thrower.  There’s some schematics and build details here. The X-men-like handheld flame thrower uses hand gestures to control the amount of flame you want.   I think this is way cool that you can build such a dangerous device but just make sure if you are going to build one, you know exactly what you are doing as even small mistakes could possibly burn your hand off. (so have a fire extinguisher nearby)

Prometheus is version 3 of the Pyro System. This is the culmination of about 6 months of thought and 2 months of building during whatever spare time I could find. This is just a basic demo video. I’ll be uploading a detail video with some design and component discussion later.

Anyways, enough about me making thermite as a 9 year old, that was just plain, great chemistry fun, glad I didn’t lose an arm or leg during the process.  This can be great for removing rust on any of your garden equipment you haven’t used for years.

Here’s how to remove rust with an electrolytic rust removal system you can make.  Basically, you apply bunch of electricity to it as I have learned, well, the details over here.

How this works:

Several other sites do a better job of explaining the chemistry of this – but basically you set up a conductive solution and insert some sacrificial anodes. You hang your rusted tool in the solution and attach it to the negative end of the power supply. You attach the positive end to the anode and turn on the power. The current travels through the solution and in the process flakes off the rust – the flaking/softening occurs because of the reaction at the surface of the good steel that pushes the rust off.

I did try making some napalm back in middle school where I did a lot of tinkering by reading the Poor Man’s James Bond. (Yes, that was my favorite book then.)

Here’s how to make napalm yourself using some styrofoam and gasoline.  Just don’t burn anyone or any houses when you do this.

On the side note, I did burn down half of my lawn while I made my napalm when I was about 11 years old.  (long time ago…)

Check out this really cool Fireworks DIY that shows you how to make cellphone-triggered fireworks using a disposable cellphone.  Sorta ghetto the way it looks right now but the theory is there and I am sure you could easily package it to make it look better.

With this tutorial you will be able to create cellphone triggered fireworks. Initially this was designed for a hobby rocket launch, but I found it was just as practical with fireworks . You call the cell phone, and it will auto ignite the firework/rocket for you with a fuse.

If you were pyro-inclined like me back in middle school, you might have read “Poor Man’s James Bond” and tried making bunch of smoke bombs and whatnot.  Of course, nowdays you might want to be careful as people might mistaken you for a terrorist but heck, smoke bombs have always been pretty harmless, I don’t see why you shouldn’t make some.

About.com has a good detailed DIY on how to make a smoke bomb with the following ingredients:

Smoke Bomb Materials

  • sugar (sucrose or table sugar)
  • potassium nitrate, KNO3, also known as saltpeter (buy it online or you can find this at some garden supply stores in the fertilizer section, some pharmacies carry it too)
  • skillet or pan
  • aluminum foil

I remember buying whole bunch of this stuff and made so much smoke bombs.  I felt like I was batman, able to fire off smoke bombs whenever I wanted to disappear in a hurry.

Here’s a great way to make a water bottle rocket launcher with use of regular sodas and PVC pipes from Home Depot. I really like this water bottle rocket launcher as it can be a great way for students to learn about science while keeping things safe.

2-liter soda bottles turned water rockets are as shrieking good a time as a water park and a lot easier to build! They streak into the air faster than the eye can track while dousing everyone in the launch area with water. Occasionally, my middle school students host and teach classes of elementary school kids from across the street to make a take-home science project, and we always finish off with a couple of launches. Years later, when I teach those now-middle school kids, they never remember me, but invariably remember the water rockets!

I am sure many of you encounter situations where your nuts or bolts stay on the rim, causing you to accidently break it off.  Now, if you ever get those hard-to-remove nuts whether from rust or whatnot, you can use this method of heating wax with propane gas near the nuts and bolts to get them totally loosened.

I’ve personally broken a rim stud before, and needless to say, I wish I had known how to do this back then.

I have a trick that has been around for a long time. This is a trick we used to use for exhaust manifolds when the bolts were so rusted in that breaking a bolt was very likely to happen. To avoid having to remove the stud in a separate process we used this trick to get them loose. This works better with a fair amount of heat to start and then let the wax slowly cool for about 3-4 minutes before attempting to remove the bolt of nut.

You know when it comes to New Years and Independence Day, you always get to see some really exotic, beautiful fireworks.  Well, all those fireworks are nowdays controlled by an ignition control system but here’s how to make one for yourself.

At the heart of my firework ignition system is an SX48 running at 50 MHz. I was able to make full use of the SX’s 36 IO pins. Thirty lines are dedicated to the 30 channels. Two lines connect to a MAX233 chip for serial port control. Another line is connected to a 7805 (TO-92) which monitors the state of the arming key. The remaining 3 lines are used to communicate with the PIC A/D converter via an SPI interface. The system was built with cost as an important factor. At $10 the SX48 Proto board was an easy choice with its incorporated 5V regulator, led and all the difficult surface mount soldering already done for me. I also designed 2 pc boards using the freeware version of Cadsoft’s Eagle. The interface board connects the SX48 Proto board and contains the MAX233 chip, A/D converter and 30 LEDs to represent the state of each of the 30 channels.

Believe it or not, this guy claims that he can start BBQ charcoals faster with his homemade wire-mesh and hair dryer.

You might want to consider trying this method for your Independence Weekend BBQ.

Whenever I have trouble starting coals for my BBQ I grab a hair dryer, point it at my grill and pull the trigger. One minute later I have red hot coals and I never have to use any lighter fluid to get them started.

Here’s an interesting photography hacking tool.  Basically the image fulgurator inserts messages onto other people’s photos by displaying the letters at the exact moment the innocent photographer’s flash goes off.

Kind cool for sending messages in a tourist attaction.

It’s a reactive flash image-projector… or, to put it another way, a real-world hack of other people’s photos. Sounds sinister, looks sinister… works great. Adapted from a flash gun and an old SLR, it senses the flash of someone’s camera, and then quickly illuminates itself, projecting images or text onto the object that was being snapped. The video of bemused tourists in Berlin, peering in confusion at the screen of their digicams is priceless.

Here’s a great way to re-use your old light bulbs and turn them into oil lamps for your pleasures.  It does look dangerous though if you cracked the light bulb and the oil starts spilling out everywhere…  wait a minute, that’d cause some serious fires!

This instructable covers the entire process, from a new light bulb to a new lamp. It includes the hollowing out of the bulb. However, you’ll need to come up with your own base for the lamp.

Here’s a fun DIY for experimenting with some high voltage from spare TV parts.

In this Instructable you will learn how to make a High Voltage High Frequency power supply in 5 minutes and for less than $20.

All you need is a compact fluorescent light (CFL) and a flyback transformer.

Flyback transformers are found in TVs and CRT monitors. They make the high voltage, high frequency current necessary to trace the electron beam across the screen. They are small and compact, and you can take them out from an old computer monitor or TV.
