Blogging naturalmente!)

Laser Etching at Techshop

Posted in Cool, DoItYourself!, Garrett's DIYs, Industrial by garrett on the April 28th, 2007 at 12:56 am

Laser etched laptop

I decided to run down to Techshop in Menlo Park this evening and get OK’ed on the laser cutter/engravers. There are a few projects coming up that may need some fancy parts. Anyway, I had my old nearly-dead laptop along and decided to make it my first project ever, after the training class. I copied a fractal image that was stored on the laptop’s hard drive and etched the design onto the back of the lid. I probably could have dialed the DPI down a little, the file took an hour to run. Anyway, it looks pretty cool! Thanks to Jim Newton for setting up Techshop so anyone can have access to the best tools (toys)! I keep trying to convince Max to come check it out, maybe this will do the trick…

Garrett’s USB Mouse Prank Device

I was at work trying to draw some stuff and Garrett came over with his USB Hid Portal device and plugged it into my USB hub (which was annoying at first) then suddenly my mouse started making circles on its own! So we decided to call this the USB Mouse Prank Device… There’s really no howto on this but you can check out Garrett’s past USB projects such as:

USB HID Portal Device

SixAxisController HOWTO using a USB HID Portal

and we will be bringing the USB HID Portal device to Maker Faire in San Mateo, California so c’ ya there!

(I am thinking about live blogging and maybe setup a live camera or somethin’… what do you think???)

You can get Youtube version here but it’s hard to see.

You can get the Blip.tv version here too which is a lot better resolution.

I went to the Silicon Valley Electronics Fleamarket in San Jose this morning. It was great, I wanted to buy everything! I was too busy looking at all the cool stuff to actually buy much. I’m definitely going to this every time they have it…next one is May 12th, 5am to noon. Here’s a Flickr photoset with some pictures and comments from the fleamarket.

DIY Video Howto: Analog Meter Control

Posted in Circuits, Garrett's DIYs, Microcontroller, Video by garrett on the April 3rd, 2007 at 8:54 pm

Here’s a video demonstrating analog meter control with a Cubloc microcontroller. It’s really easy to do, and adds a retro look to any project. It’s kind of a long video because I’m taking the time to explain everything I’m doing, but it’s a very simple concept and works perfectly. Now you can make an analog hit-meter for your website, or something else cool! Also, I got cut off a little at the end, but don’t worry, I was just about say goodbye. :)
