Re-Make - DIY Dead (Death) Star Art made from old Batteries!

Posted in A+Featured Entertainment, Batteries, Consumer, Cool, Design, DoItYourself!, Earth, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, Re-use by max on the September 26th, 2008 at 3:08 pm

Here’s a great use for re-making stuff, use old batteries to make a death (or dead) star!

Dead Star is made from residual battery at the end of their duty. Left to itself, the sculpture will slowly cool down since there is no longer electronic activity taking place in it. The hundreds of batteries were once used to power appliances before they finish their cycle in a recycle facility. Retrieve from death, they were assembled again in this whole structure.

DIY Color-Changing LED Coasters!

Posted in A+Featured DIYs, Consumer, Cool, Design, DoItYourself!, Drinks, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, LED, Projects by max on the September 26th, 2008 at 11:49 am

Here’s a cool set of DIY colo-changing LED coasters.  Basically, it runs on solar power, LEDs light up in red for hot drinks and blue for cold drinks.

Looks pretty simple to make, maybe a good idea for your next circuits projects.

Smart Coasters are cast-plastic coasters for your drink that light up red when you put a hot drink on top and light up blue with a cold drink. The design is fully analog– no microcontrollers and no programming– and they incorporate a solar cell so that the whole thing is hermetically sealed: waterproof and washable. Complete step-by-step DIY instructions are included for both the electronics and the resin casting.

Blackberry Storm Leaked Pics!

Posted in A+Featured Gadgets, Blackberry, Consumer, Cool, Design, Entertainment, Gadgets, cell phones by max on the September 26th, 2008 at 10:28 am

Oh boy, here’s some leaked photos of the Blackberry Storm.  I do like it because it’s looks just like my Blackberry 8830 except everything is touchscreen.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Blackberry Storm outperforms iPhones as far as keyboards are concerned. (as they always have, Blackberry still leads iPhones in sales)

Here’s a fun DIY on how to make a bacon princess tiara out of bacon.  Now, can we eat this after we make it?

It’s not as simple as it looks so be prepared to dig into this if you want one for yourself.

You are going to be working with an enzyme that bonds protein. You are made of protein. Unless you want to glue your lungs together or glue your eyelids to your eyeballs, you absolutely must follow these safety rules. We cannot be held accountable for any mishaps you might have while working with transglutaminase.

DIY - How to Make an Electric Go-Kart! (or is it Go-cart!)

Posted in A+Featured DIYs, Auto, Cars, Consumer, Cool, Design, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, HOWTO, Hack, Projects, Travel, kids, technology by max on the September 25th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

I will probably never figure out the original name for Go-Karts but here’s a really cool DIY electric go-kart someone has made and you might want to refer it if you want to make your own in the near future.

This year, the Summer Engineering Workshop team was interested in making an electric go-kart. (Some kind of obsession with things you can ride…) But to make things more interesting, we decided to add a 110F ultracapacitor into the mix. Capacitors store electrical potential energy; much less than a battery, but you can charge and discharge them more quickly. Research into automotive applications of capacitors (in hybrids, for example) has led to development of ultracapacitors with increasing energy density and decreasing price.

Research is research. We were also interested in having some fun. So, we wanted to see if we could very simply integrate an ultracapacitor into a stylish electric go-kart. One of the simplest ways to do so is to use it exclusively to store energy recaptured from the kart as it brakes. Then, put this energy at the driver’s fingertips in the form of a power “assist,” or, less formally, boost! While it’s likely not the best solution for full-size autos, we wanted to make a tangible demonstration that the technology is closer to reality than many might think.

The site is very informative and even provides free circuit schematics for the electricity parts, I highly suggest you to check this one out.

DIY Life-size replica of Concorde Engine!

Posted in A+Featured DIYs, Consumer, Cool, Design, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Flying, Gadgets, Travel by max on the September 25th, 2008 at 5:29 pm

Concorde may be one of the fastest airplanes that most of us will ever ride in our lifetime and someone has made a 1:1 real life-size replica of the Concorde engine using what he learned from a $10 Concorde engine repair book he bought on eBay.

This engine might not run but I am sure the guy who made it knows almost every detail of what went into making the Concorde engine.

Design firm PostlerFerguson has created Olympus, a 1:1 model of one of Concorde’s engines, which will be on display in the window of Selfridges until October 22.

DIY Movie Hack - How to Make a Portable Movie Rail System!

Posted in A+Featured DIYs, Consumer, Cool, Design, Digital Cameras, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, HOWTO, Hack, Projects, Video by max on the September 25th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Do you ever wonder how to make a Portable Movie Rail System for making your own homemade professional movies?

Well, now you can hack one of these cool portable movie rail systems yourself by following some of these pics which are pretty easy to understand.

We often  see chase
scene movements in film. This picture needs to be rather stable.

Professional rail system is heavy, and expensive to use. We find it hard to carry around
and use.
What we need is a low cost, lightweight and portable rail system.

On one weekend, my colleague Murdoch has done some research online. He
found that low-cost DIY rail system is very doable. And use only common materials at we see every day.

Remember that one NES Cartridge that had the whole system embedded WITH an LCD?

Well, here’s a similar NES Cartidge except you can insert other NES cartridges too.

People are so smart these days, they are making NES 5-10 times smaller than its original size.

If you are into weird phones, you will definitely love this High Heel Phone.

Simply set this phone along with your other phones and if someone needs to use the phone, tell them that you gotta wear one of your pink high heels to use it.
