Sony Accelerating Production of Larger OLED TVs

Sony Accelerating Production of Larger OLED TVs

Sony is accelerating their production of larger OLED TVs.

Why?

OLED TVs are obviously better than traditional TVs due to their lower power while high output, meaning brighter, better pictures. There’s also Samsung, who is working on their own OLED TVs.

The question will remain which big TV manufacturer will win the race. The competition might be all too good for consumers and we should expect to be able to buy a 102″ OLED TV for around $2000 in the next couple years.

According to a Sony report straight from its Japan headquarters, its young OLED TV-display production unit will be funded with a $210-million investment in larger screens (over 16-inches at least) and will ramp-up by the end of 2008. This will put it in place for a full-line release of TVs in late 2009 or early 2010. Sony was the first manufacturer to launch a legitimate (if very expensive) OLED TV option, the XEL-1, late last year.

Quick Tips: What is an OLED? (via WIkipedia)

A significant benefit of OLED displays over traditional liquid crystal displays (LCDs) is that OLEDs do not require a backlight to function. Thus they draw far less power and, when powered from a battery, can operate longer on the same charge. Because there is no need to distribute the backlight, an OLED display can also be much thinner than an LCD panel. OLED-based display devices also can be more effectively manufactured than LCDs and plasma displays.

Suntronic 102 inch HDTV for your backyard!

Suntronic 102 inch HDTV for your backyard!

102″ TV for your backyard can be a lot better than the LED TV we mentioned yesterday.

Not only are they large, but these tough-guy TVs can function in temperatures ranging from -40 to more than 120 degrees, have built-in heaters and air conditioners, and of course are waterproof.

The ESPN Remote!

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Gadgets, Household, TV by max on the May 22nd, 2008 at 4:27 pm

ESPN remote is here! Well, at best, it’s really bringing the TV Guide to your remote, which is a genius idea in itself. Looks like they are going to get like million orders before they even start selling it.

Looking for an alternative to the Harmony? It now exists. As I was leaving the floor at the Cable Show, I got the lowdown on the new Ultimate Remote from tvCompass. In a quick demo I was particularly impressed with the TV Guide EPG rendering - not an easy thing to get right on such a small screen. Even more important, however: the remote is WiFi-enabled, meaning plenty of extras like messaging and content applications. It’s launching with ESPN and associated sports content, but the partnership opportunities are really limitless.

Wow wee, this is an awesome DIY 56 inch multi-touch television!

I have built a nice multitouch display during my spare time as a hobby. In this article, I will share plans and explain how to construct a 56 inch multitouch screen that looks like a TV. It’s totaly homemade, it’s not made from an old tv but you could do so. This article is for people who already have basis in this kind of thing. It’s not an easy setup and it’s not suitable to be commercialized but for personal use it’s fine to test new soft.

Fake TV - LED TV really...

Anyone up for a fake tv for home security?

Nothing says “people are home” like a window with the flickering light of a TV coming out of it. I mean, if I was a thief I certainly wouldn’t try to break into a house that looked like it had people plopped on the couch inside it. I’d just move on to the next dark house on the block.

DIY TV HACK - How to hook up your TV to your computer! (Or 2 Monitors)

DIY TV HACK - How to hook up your TV to your computer! (Or 2 Monitors)

DIY TV HACK - How to hook up your TV to your computer! (Or 2 Monitors)

Well, this is a real short hack (or a howto really) for hooking up your TV to your computer.

First, you will need a dual-monitor graphic adaptor or extra graphic adaptors.  (1 per monitor) If you don’t have one, go buy one with lots of RAM over at your favorite electronics store.

*If you have a laptop, you don’t need a dual-monitor, just use the S-Video or the video outputs. You will need to hit that monitor shaped button along with Fn button couple times usually to make the screen show.

You can also get DVI to TV cables if you want better resolution but I simply hooked up via S-Video since most TVs support that and I don’t feel like shelling out another 30 bucks for the cables.

After you have your graphic adaptor installed, hook up your PC Monitor and your TV as shown above. (The picture shows how I hooked up S-Video but even better if you have that DVI connectivity on your HDTV or DLPTV. You can also hook up to another monitor if you’d like. I only used TV example since I only have 1 monitor.)

If your graphic adaptor comes with some software, install that too.

DUALMONITOR3

Now go to your Display Settings. Click on #2 and select on “Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor” and hit “Apply”.

You should now be able to drag any of your windows into your TV and enjoy SiteHoppin or watch YouTube videos in full screen.

Here’s a video explaining the whole thang:
