Here’s a cool solar dish that is capable of “vaporizing” water the second you hit the apex of its dish.  The MIT students have already formed a corporation, there’s no telling when this will be available for homes and offices.

The results are staggering — the completed mirror focuses enough solar energy at its focal point to melt solid steel.  The energy of typical sunlight is concentrated by a factor of 1,000.  This was showcased during a demonstration, in which a team member held up a board, which instantly and violently combusted, when brought within range of the focal point.

Wow, check out this awesome solar powered glowing flower pot that conserves the sun’s energy during the day and glow the pot itself at night.  This might be useful at replacing those outdoor lights with a double-whammy pot/light.

The length of time the pot glows is dependent on the amount of sunlight the solar panel is exposed to during the day, but in the UK you’re looking at about 6-8 hours in the summer and 2-4 hours in the winter - more than enough for your average evening garden soiree.

Here’s milkscanner, a 3D scanner that gets each slice of the 3D scan with a spoon drop of milk!

Friedrich Kirschner’s Milkscanner is a clever method for scanning 3D objects using only a webcam, some milk, and a camera rig made out of LEGO.

The basic idea is this: you place an object in a container, incrementally fill the container with milk, and take a photo after each tiny fill increment. The Milkscanner software mattes out the white part of the images, resulting in a silhouette “slice” of the object for each increment in the Z dimension. Each slice gives you information about the outer perimeter of the object at that depth (assuming the object is convex).
