So a few months ago they made headlines on supporting Linux as they released the client as open source. While this got hopes up for many, it was only the client that was open source, the server is still proprietary. While slightly disappointing, this is fine, they’re a company trying to make money. I don’t fault them for this, it’s just that a free, portable service like that would be a killer app.

Here’s an amusing story about Unlimited Group, a financial company in South Africa, that uses a “racing” homing pigeon to transfer gigabytes of data between their 2 remote offices in South Africa. Since Telecom in South Africa charges about $10/gigabyte of internet data transfer, Unlimited Group has enlisted one of the “finest” homing pigeons Winston to deliver their data.

The Unlimited has hired a high speed consultant, Winston, a top class racing pigeon from Gillits (just outside of Hillcrest). And on 9 September 2009 (090909), he will be transporting 4GBs of information in a micro-sd card and racing our 1mbps ADSL data line from Howick to Hillcrest.

What do I think?

I think these homing pigeons are great, there’s no doubt about that.

Next time you need to transport something small, hiring one of these homing pigeons might just be the best thing for your business.

I actually didn’t know homing pigeons exists outside of computer games but I guess they do exist!

Homing pigeons are called carrier pigeons when they are used to carry messages. This is possible where a message is written on thin light paper (such as cigarette paper) and rolled into a small tube attached to the bird’s leg; this is called pigeon post. People often labor under the misapprehension that the pigeons know where to deliver the mail. The fact is that they can only go back to one “mentally marked” point that they have identified as their home. So “pigeon mail” can only work when the sender is actually holding the receiver’s pigeons. White homing pigeons are used in Release Dove ceremonies at weddings, funerals, and some sporting events.

Okay, I admit it, I am not an Apple fan boy, I am a linux fan boy, let’s forget about bad PR just for a minute here as I don’t really like getting mad anyways.

The BIG NEWS this week is that there’s a way to build a Perabyte (or 1,000,000 gigabytes) Cloud Server for under $120,000.

BackBlaze, a company that provides unlimited online backups for just $5/month, has just released their company’s secret. They can build this “perabyte” cloud server for just about $117,000. Compared that to Dell’s $826,000 or Amazon EC’s $2M equivalent storage space.

Perhaps they did provide this HOWTO as a marketing ploy but it’s a very honest marketing ploy and I am buying it.

I have to say I am highly impressed that BackBlaze had the courage to share their knowledge to the world. I see that their web traffic has skyrocketed overnight, must be getting a lot of new customers. (I am even thinking about signing up for their backup service, maybe they can give me one free so I can test it out for the next couple years? hahaha, I love free stuff.)

In essence, they just showed you how to start a storage server company at the minimal cost. Of course, there’s more involved than just making servers but still, they just solved 90% of the overhead for you.

Before realizing that we had to solve this storage problem ourselves, we considered Amazon S3, Dell or Sun Servers, NetApp Filers, EMC SAN, etc. As we investigated these traditional off-the-shelf solutions, we became increasingly disillusioned by the expense. When you strip away the marketing terms and fancy logos from any storage solution, data ends up on a hard drive. But when we priced various off-the-shelf solutions, the cost was 10 times as much (or more) than the raw hard drives. Here’s a comparison chart of the price for one petabyte from various venders:

Building a vehicle that can be powered by a human must be the Holy Grail of engineering and sometimes clever people actually produce something that is really interesting. They have managed to build a human powered hovercraft, which you would have thought would be a hard thing to make, but as you can see from the images they have done it.

The team behind this is the London Flight Club, they have been working on the Steam Boat Willy project for a long time, and they seem to have got to the point where they have a working model. It runs on pedal power and yes, it actually does inflate the skirt around the craft too, it is an amazing piece of engineering, but hard work you would imagine.

This interesting device offers the user to chance to create sophisticated music from only this small device. The finger orchestra as it has been named offers the user a series of seven joysticks that all have their own functions.

My blogger friend over at GetUSB.info has a great article on the difference between USB Copy Protection vs. USB Encryption technology. A lot of people might get confused by USB flash drive companies who try to market copy protection as encryption. Well, don’t get this wrong as it could be very costly for your classified information.

Greg also mentions TrueCrypt, a free open-source encryption software you can use to secure your USB flash drive.

In short; USB copy protection secures a file or set of files so they cannot be copied – thus copy protection. USB encryption scrambles the source files so they cannot be read unless you decrypt them. Take a moment and think about this…there is a BIG difference.
