HD DIY – How to Render 1080P HD Videos!

With my recent purchase of the new Canon 7D, I have been rendering HD videos for days on my old XP computer. Well, it turns out rendering is completely useless for HD movies longer than like 10 minutes.

If your computer freezes while rendering using programs like Sony Vegas Pro or Adobe Premier, it’s probably your computer hardware.

You will want to use 64-bit versions of any video editing software in order to render videos faster and in reasonable time.

Plus, Windows XP only supports upto 4GB of memory (and for some AMD processors even less). Even with a 4GB Windows XP setup I had, rendering came to a crawl and never rendered completely.

So, I had a 64-bit Triple-Core AMD with 4Ghz that was running Ubuntu. I decided to install Windows 7 64-bit version coupled with Sony Vegas Pro 9.0 64-bit version.

For Windows operating systems, you will need either Vista or Windows 7 to take full advantage of extra memory you have on your computer.

For decent rendering, I recommend at least 4 gigabytes of memory and perhaps 8 gigs if you can afford it.

Anyways, I just got the new Windows 7 64-bit plus Sony Vegas Pro 9.0 64-bit working flawlessly. Also, I am very impressed with Windows 7 as this is the very first time I am using it. I like how Windows 7 is more compatible with my older XP programs plus you can use most of Vista drivers for hardware.

Now, I can finally start rendering 1080P HD videos and make long movies too.

Whether I am uploading them to YouTube or making a home DVD, having the right hardware makes sense if you are going to render 1080P HD videos.

Of course, 32-bit machines will do short clips well, they just can’t handle the long ones.

Well, I hope that helps you. If you are having trouble with rendering HD videos, try upgrading your operating system to a 64-bit OS and the software also. (minimum Dual-Core CPU and 4GB of memory)

Here’s a really cool hack that uses GoogleVoice to translate voice into words and to his LED sign. This should save a lot of time anytime you want to change the message on your LED sign. Brilliant!

I made the LED sign following instructions from this tutorial on Nerdkits.com. The hardware is some LED’s, a nerdkit, a piece of cardboard and a bit of wire that I got from some Cat 5 cable laying around. I cut out the cardboard and printed a grid to help me lay out the LED’s. I think mine were 1 cm apart. The soldering took forever and it was the first real time I did any soldering so it looks kinda crappy. Oh well. It works. The sign itself is powered by a 9 volt battery and receives data from my laptop through the serial port via a USB adapter. All that stuff was included in the Nerdkit when I bought it. The microcontroller is running code from the tutorial I mentioned earlier. One of these days I’m going to make an enclosure for this thing.

Check out this great DIY that shows you how to make a DIY webcam-based laser distance finder. This is great for implementing distance-sensing projects along with a live webcam.

The author also included some Visual Basic code you can use to implement on a Windows-based program. I am sure you can easily hack the code to use elsewhere with other projects out there.

Miniature robotic rotorcraft for example can carry about 100g of payload. It is possible to perform machine vision tasks such as obstacle identification and avoidance though the use of a webcam (or mini wireless camera interfaced to a computer via USB adaptor). Better yet, two webcams can provide stereo machine vision thus improving obstacle avoidance because depth can be determined. The drawback of this of course is the addition of the weight of a second camera. This page describes how a mini laser pointer can be configured along with a single camera to provide mono-machine vision with range information.

For those of you who have read the Top 10 reasons why XP will be around longer and still want to fiddle with Windows 7, you can as Windows 7 upgrades are now officially available:

For the record, you will need to get the Windows 7 Ultimate if you want language support for international languages. For myself, I need Korean support since I do often and on write to some of my old friends in Korea. I think if you are an early adaptor, get it now but if you are happy with your current setup, don’t waste your time upgrading, just wait until at least Windows 7 SP2 comes out.

As for me, I will be getting a new netbook anyways, I will get it along with that.

Most of these old computers like the Sega SC-3000H from 1983, if they qualify as a computer at all, are probably long gone by now, but that is a shame because here is a mod that has beefed up the Sega machine and it is now running Windows XP!

This machine was bought for $4 and after around $800 worth of investment it now runs Windows XP, of course, I won’t look at it because I want Windows 7, XP is just so yesterday!

This is device that many people have been waiting for, but because it is merely in the concept stages that means long painful wait, which is true to Microsoft traditions. They tell us about something we want it so badly that people would resort to anything for to their get their hands on one, and then it is taken away from us for a couple years or more.

However, this is a cool looking device that clearly has potential, but right now. The images make this look so useable and it comes with decent seven inch dual display, these are of course multi touch and therefore can be used for writing and surfing without the need for a mouse or keyboard.

The word is that this device is currently in the prototype stage, but hopefully as time moves on and further details are released we will be able to gather more detailed information, you never know there may even be an estimated release date.

If you are not too computer-literate on Photoshop and similar photo-editing tools, you might be happy to learn that there’s a program called LightBox that will let you just do all that good stuff without knowing any Photoshop skills.

This just seems like the perfect software my mom would love, she is still using Photoshop skills I taught her 10 years ago.

How user friendly is LightBox? When you run the program you’re presented with a sidebar of common tasks like color balancing and red-eye removal. Mousing over each of them provides not only an explanation of the tool but sample pictures showing the results and every tool within the editor itself has mouse over tips. Once you’re actually editing your image you can easily—as seen in the screenshot above—divide the image to show how the alterations are effecting it compared to the original. The divided and side by side comparison feature is great for photo enhancements where your goal is to make the picture more appealing without giving it an unrealistic appearance. So there you have it, is this what the new packaging is going to look like, will Microsoft really follow the old style that Vista used, especially as they would want to forget Vista just quickly as they forgot about Microsoft ME.

As tricky as it may sound this app can actually allow the user to take control of a remote controlled aircraft and fly it around as if you had the proper flight controls. The program allows the iPhone to access a Linksys router to get an IP address and from there on its just plain sailing. I am not sure that is as easy as all that, but there are further details available on site.

What you get:

1. Throttle Lock/Cut

2. Visual Throttle Cue so you can see if the throttle is at full and you are not getting power to the plane. In addition, the phone will vibrate depending on different throttle positions. Full throttle gets a hearty shake out of the old girl.

3. Network status (Based on ping latency)

4. Really difficult to accidentally quit.

5. Ability to eventually use more than one engine. (Just in case).

6. Cool looking throttle levers like the big boys use.

What I like most about this is the remote mouse, it’s like having a wireless motion-sensing mouse, great for those of you with trouble even getting out of your bed. Would love to see this end up as an actual consumer product some day soon. (I’ve seen some already.)

Using the accelerometer and touchscreen of either an iPhone or iPod touch, Air Mouse works over a local Wi-Fi network to control you computer’s mouse and keyboard. GooseGrade one of those friendly companies I talk to at the Web 2.0 Expo this year. It’s a social networking site where people can submit their grammatical/spelling errors to be corrected by members of GooseGrade, who also earn status based on their previous corrections.

(You can read about exactly what the site is about by reading previous reviews from TechCrunch and ReadWriteWeb.)

At the Web 2.0 Expo, GooseGrade has launched a new Wordpress Plugin that will allow your readers and GooseGrade members to correct your blog posts. It’s a free service and if you are always running out of time like me, this Wordpress plugin can help you correct/edit/finalize your blog posts, mostly done by your readers while you approve of their correction if any are found.

I think this is a cool service and more bloggers should take advantage of it. Based on their market research, people tend to visit blogs more often when there are no grammatical/spelling errors. Probably true and I am guilty of not re-checking my blog posts too.

It seems a life time ago when the Sinclair ZX81 was the considered the height the technology, yet when we think bad there was little that could be done with this machine as this was the pioneering days of personal computing. There was not even a proper market established back them, but we still knew that small unassuming device was the future, we just had to wait for everything to catch it up.

But now it seems that the Sinclair ZX81 is able to perform with the rest of the big boys, according to the making of this Sinclair based PC. The old machine was taken apart and had an update motherboard installed, along with Linux, 8 Gb SDHC memory card instead of a bulky hard drive. Now this computer from yesteryear has had new life poured into it.
