DIY Tool - Epson unveils smallest GPS chip ever

Posted in Business, Consumer, Cool, DoItYourself!, Hack, Microcontroller, Robots, Space, Suppliers, Travel, Wireless by max on the December 26th, 2006 at 3:41 pm

Here’s the smallest GPS chip ever! Great news for us
hackers and DIYers!

PhysOrg.com says “thanks to clever use of space-saving technology the S4E19863 series is the world’s smallest GPS module (7 mm x 6 mm x 1.28 mm), making it ideal for applications with limited component space, such as mobile phones. ”

Epson’s new GPS is already being massed produced and is already integrated into NTT DoCoMo’s FOMA 903i series mobile phone. It does look extra tiny on that finger there.

Electromagnetic Pistol using PIC!

Posted in Circuits, Consumer, Cool, Entertainment, Gadgets, Microcontroller by max on the December 22nd, 2006 at 11:49 pm

Wow, check this gun out that William submitted. Thanks William!
Check out the photos and how it works.  Nice big ass capacitors, wow!

  • Two coils are precisely pulsed in sequence (350 Amp peak) to fire a steel projectile
  • Two infrared sensors detect the projectile position within the firing tube
  • Controlled by a PIC microcontroller
  • Powered by 8 AA NiCd battery pack
  • Built-in battery charger
  • Bar display tracks capacitor bank charge progress
  • Battery and Fault LED indicators
  • Laser targeting sight
  • Makes no sound when fired
  • Finally the device the whole world has been yearning for since the beginning of time!

Zedomax DIY125 - HOWTO make a Music Syncing Light Orb Alarm Clock!

http://zedomax.com/image/200612/lightorb-alarmclock.jpg

Here’s the last DIY for year 2006!

Okay, we have seen some really cool Light Orbs while trying to make this Music Syncing Light Orb Alarm Clock.
We started with Tod’s creation and soon realize that 1 LED will not be bright enough in slightest light conditions though his Light Orb is tight let us say.
So we checked out RGB lights at Hackedgadgets.com. Which is cool and uses 4 Red, 3 Green, and 3 Blue LEDs.
Well during our google search for Light Orb HOWTOs, we came to the Ambient Devices schematic and their technical notes. Well it says that with the right voltage, you don’t need to use resistors.

We wanted to create a Light Orb that would be a mix of Light Orb, some cheap
Piezo music, and an alarm clock. We figured these would do very good Christmas
presents for our friends and family.

Unicycle Balancing Bot!

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Gadgets, Microcontroller, Motor, Robots, Video by max on the December 22nd, 2006 at 1:21 pm

Maurits sent us his unicycle balancing robot which actually has one wheel for moving.

Thanks Maurits!

Now meet another balancing robot. This one balances on one wheel and apparently uses two RCX bricks and four sensors along with three tires to maintain balance on the axis perpendicular to its unicycle. The robot balances on the main axis by directly powering the wheel. The axis perpendicular to its unicycle is balanced by the set of rotating tires. Check out the video!

HACK - Digitized Doodle Dome using PICAXE and 5.25″ floppy drives

Here’s a real cool doodle dome using a PICAXE and a 5.25″ floppy drive!

The Doodle Dome was a toy made by Tyco in the early 1990’s. It is basically an Etch-A-Sketch type deal, except that instead of a flat rectangle, it is (most of) a sphere. Like an Etch-a-Sketch, there are two knobs that move a little pointer around a drawing surface, and it scrapes some silver dust-like stuff off to draw a picture. Outside of the shape, the other notable difference is that there is a little lever that pulls the drawing point off of the surface, so the picture can have gaps in it, instead of being all connected by a line
