Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft Review
Here’s a cool article on the new Ubuntu 6.10. The above picture i think is the 3D window system…
As of October 26, Ubuntu has released their latest Linux operating system, version 6.10 aka Edgy Eft, which can be downloaded here. Ubuntu has been the up and coming star company in the Linux O.S. scene for the last couple of years. They just seem to get more popular with each release and along with their releases getting better with each release. I would dare say they have nearly the cult following like Apple Computers or Google. Ubuntu, as you might be able to tell, is an unorthodox company, even for a company in the Linux scene!
Ubuntu was originally founded by Mark Shuttleworth, a South African multi-millionaire, who once paid $20 million to ride into outer space on the Russian Soyuz TM-34 mission. The company’s name Ubuntu actually derives from the South African (Zulu) concept of ubuntu, which means “I am because you are” or “humanity towards others.” Ubuntu tries to apply that concept into their business model. The companies slogan is “Linux for human beings” and they go as far as to offer to ship for free a copy of their distribution to anyone in the world. The concept of Ubuntu fits perfectly into the world of Linux and open source software. Without the work of others, there would be no way that Linux would be what it is today and the same applies to Ubuntu.
Ubuntu 6.10 released!
Well, I guess I am couple days slow, but, yes, Ubuntu version 6.10 released!
I can’t wait to play with it.
What is Ubuntu? It’s the most popular linux OS today, with the idea that linux should be made for human beings.
Kinda cool slogan.

Pet Feeding Automation Video - ubuntu cat feeder revisited
hmm… this cat feeder is great, simple to make,
all it’s using is a cron process to schedule a cd eject command…
but kinda bulky, let me see what we can do here to trim down a whole PC to a microcontroller level…
we will first need a cat though, don’t have a cat…maybe a dog?
DIY HACK HOWTO - Snoop Doggy USB
Here’s a cool howto on snooping your USB for linux hackers! Yes, modprobe is very useful…
Rad, Quiet Earth has a good how-to on listening in to what’s going on over USB, great for reverse engineering weird USB doo-dads… - “This is intended to be a howto to debug usb transactions under linux, or simply to reverse engineer propietary usb stuff. If you need to reverse engineer a windows only usb driver, you can do it easily running vmware under linux. We can snoop the usb traffic from windows using usbmon which is part of the linux kernel since version 2.6.11 (I think). Previous to that you had to use patches.”
mini Linux DIY - Re-partitioning your harddrive for Linux
Okay, today I was trying to re-partition my new HP laptop so I can install Linux without erasing my new Windows Media edition that came with it. After downloading about a dozen partitioning software that don’t actually let you partition your drives unless you pay them like $50, I found this GParted GOLive download, which is a Linux CD bootable disk that lets to repartition your harddrive with ease. Yes, this one is FREE, these are the days I love Linux over Windows… You don’t need any knowledge of Linux, it just runs on Linux, just boot it up, re-partition and bam, you are ready to go without reinstalling Windows… Well, one thing I had trouble was the video driver for my laptop, just select the mini-Vesa option at the start and you should be fine. Hmmm, these little boot CDs are neat with Linux, you can put a whole operating system plus a little partitioning software under 30MB, something you can’t do with Windows…
Linux DIY Hack - HOW TO - Scan the ‘waves with your TV card
Wow, here’s a cool way to put your old linux box to good use…TV wave hacking!
AMXL shows you how to use a SAA7134 based TV card and Debian to tune in to all sorts of waves you can’t normally get with your TV… Looks like it will work with many of the TV cards out there too… - “If you have a TV capture card in your computer, you probably already have all the hardware you need to listen in on much more than just TV and radio (only software changes are needed). The hardware will also allow you to hear emergency services, taxi and freight radios, UHF citizen band radio, aircraft transmissions, and more. In this article, I show you how you can make your Linux distribution (I used Debian Sarge, but other distros should work too, as long as you have a 2.6.x Linux kernel) and SAA7134 based TV card tune into those frequencies you can’t get at with a normal radio or TV.”
DIY Hack - Port Linux or Windows to your PSP!
cool way to get you started in PSP porting…
Windows 95 actually runs quite well but don’t expect it to be a speed demon. It takes about 10 minutes to boot but afterwards it’s pretty usable. I was able to do things like: open “My computer” and browse the virtual hard drive, complete a whole game of Minesweeper and run various other applications. Now you too can get your Minesweeper fix on the go
I’ve also tested DLX Linux which comes pre-packaged with Bochs and it works just fine. However, I couldn’t do much with it because there’s no keyboard support. If you want to do your word processing on it then wait until keyboard support is implemented (though I doubt it will be any fun using the joystick).
