Make your Linux box look like a MAC
I don’t know what it is lately, MACs have been very appealing to me lately. Maybe because the
new MACs are unix based or what… Regardless of how much money I don’t have in my pocket
to buy one, here’s a way you can make your PC look like a MAC and fool people if you have Linux
installed…
DIY HACK - Build a Skype Server for Your Home Phone System
Here’s a detailed instructions on building your own skype server for your home phone system.
One irritating feature of Skype is that it must be running on a computer for you to make and receive calls. That is, when your computer is off, Skype doesn’t work. Moreover, when you run Skype on the computer you use day in and day out, Skype’s performance (call quality, reliability and so forth) can suffer if you are doing other things that deprive it of the runtime resources it needs.
My solution was to build a Skype server that provides 24/7 phone service with the minimum of hassle and fuss. By dumping your regular phone company and taking back control of your home phone wiring using a Skype server, you will have not only a phone system with nearly the same capabilities as before-indeed, in some ways better-you will also save a bundle of money! In my case, I save a little less than $700 US each year (this year, next year, and the year after that, and so on), or about 82% off of my old phone bill.
Using a Skype server plugged in to the existing copper phone wiring of your home means that you can lift a receiver anywhere in your home, at any time, and get a regular dial tone. Incoming calls either from Skype users or regular phones ring all handsets throughout your home. Basically, you can make Skype behave like a regular phone line, but at a tiny fraction of the cost.

Help us find James Kim by watching the video on ipod and more! Every click will help the video get on top of YouTube.
We’ve received word that a respected member of our tech community, James Kim (whom many of you may know as CNET’s senior editor of digital audio), and his family have gone missing. As we understand it, last weekend James, his wife Kati (above right), and his very young girls Penelope (left) and Sabine (baby), drove from their home in the SF Bay Area to Seattle. They were expected back some time Sunday, but were last seen by a hotel clerk at 5:45 PM on Saturday in or between Gold Beach or Portland, Oregon. We sincerely do hope they are all safe, and our hearts go out to the Kim family.
We’ll have more information as we get it. If you have any information as to the Kim family’s whereabouts, please contact the SFPD at 415-558-5508 during normal business hours, and 415-553-1071 after hours.

HACK - Hacking the PS3
There are way to hack the PS3 via Linux:
You can now dump your BlueRay images into ISO format using Linux on your Playstation 3. All that is required to drop the images onto your 60GB hard drive is to run the following command “dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/imagename.img”. So far there is no way to play your backed up games, but this is a good start.
Well if you get further into hacking the PS3, you can always create a dual boot system.
Linux seems to prove itself as a good hacking tool for any system although we are still really “hacking” and there is no retail Linux solutions.
Hurray, thumbs up for Linux and Linux hackers!

More wii web browser hacking exposed!
Fred, the winner of our put MAKE on a Wii request sent in how you can get to websites on your Nintendo Wii… He writes:Basically it’s very easy but it didnt work until i restarted my computer. Most of the info was from here…
- Install Simple DNS Plus
- Go to Tools -> Edit DNS Records and Tools -> Quick Domain Wizard. Put oss.shop.wii.com for the domain and the comuter’s ip for webserver ip.
- Install Apache 2.2 with the computer’s ip for both domains and admin@ip for the email
- Install PHP 5.2 from http://us3.php.net/get/php-5.2.0-win32-installer.msi/from/a/mirror to the apache /conf
- directory (make sure there’s a popup asking if you want to change apache’s configuration, un/reinstall if it doesnt)
- Download WiiBrowse from http://kontek.net/mozy/wii/ or http://1337.lastunicorn.info/WiiBrowse.zip and extract to \htdocs in apache
- Restart apache from the taskbar
- Change the connection setting on the wii so that the primary DNS is your computer’s ip
- Launch the shop channel and you should see google. Done!
I think this only works when the wii is getting wifi through the computer. Pages on the wii are cutoff but people have fixed this by using frames and it cant browse pages with javascript (Gmail) or view flash. Anyways it was fun, and thank you very much!
Windows XP Running on PS3
Someone got Windows XP running on PS3 via emulator via Linux OS. Well, if
we wanted to run windows apps, we’d just rather use wine. But we give a thumbs
up for the news.
