For those of you looking to ways to hook up your desktop to your HDTV wirelessly using either HDMI digital connection or standard analog VGA, there IS a way, you can use Atlona’s AT-HDAir product which is a USB HDMI/VGA wireless converter. The unit also supports audio for HDMI connections as of recently (see press release), which means you will no longer need cables nor have your desktop close to your HDTV in order to watch crisp, clear 720P YouTube videos.

As for me, I have been looking for a solution like this one as I have most of my desktops just far enough away where cables will not be an option. I do have a netbook that I thought about hooking up to my HDTV but the CPUs on netbooks are still lacking and I can’t truly stream 720P videos from the internet with an Intel Atom 1.6Ghz processor.

It’s very easy to use a computer LCD monitor (with DVI inputs) as TV by simply plugging in an HDMI to DVI cable. Of course, you will need a separate sound system/speakers unless your LCD comes with speakers too.

Of course, it’s also easy to do the reverse, using your HDTV as computer screen, you will just need an HDMI cable from your graphic card to the HDTV. (all HDTVs have HDMI inputs)

LCD TVs have come down in price, but not enough. If you have a cable box, than your tv tuner is in the that box, not in the tv, so then why buy a tv with a tuner you will never use? Believe it or not you can save almost $200 when you buy a computer monitor instead of a tv.

Here’s a really cheap HDMI to DVI cable for those of you who want to connect your computer/laptop to your monitor that has an input for DVI but not HDMI.

I think this is the cheapest I found right now at less than $1.

Btw, you don’t need to shell out like $40 to $60 at your local Best Buy, these cables to the same thing. So long as they are digital, you won’t see any improvements by using better cables. (unless you have a TON of eletromagnetic interference, then it might make a slight difference)

In the analog days, you needed good cables with good eletromagnetic shielding but in digital, you don’t.

Here’s a rather cool DIY interactive Multi-touch display project that you can learn to make also. I like this multi-touch project as the display is actually not LCD but a projected screen on a whiteboard.

This rules as I think projected LCDs are slightly more safer for child use, spills, and whatnot.

Also, don’t forget about Ideum’s 100-inch multi-touch table, how to turn an HD TV into multi-touch table, and more on how to build a multi-touch table using regular LCDs too.

Between the Apple iPhone and Microsoft’s interactive table, multi-touch displays are all the rage. This instructable will show you how to turn your lcd projector into an interactive multi-touch display table using a few cheap components readily available from the hardware store.

LCD Hack – How to Fix Broken Backlights with Lightbulb and Old CRT Monitor Case!

Broken LCD? You might want to check out if your LCD is really broken of if it’s just its backlight. If its just a backlight problem, you should try reviving it using a lightbulb and an old CRT monitor case as this DIY shows you how. I think this could come in very handy for sheezy.

Fix any broken LCD backlight with an ordinary light bulb and a dead CRT monitor. Broken LCD monitors basically come in three categories: 1) Cracked LCD panel, rendering the unit completely worthless 2) Backlight problem 3) Power supply problem If it’s a backlight or power supply problem, it can be fixed. Usually, the problem stems from the high voltage inverter circuitry, either bad power transistors, capacitors, or thermal stress on the circuit board leading to broken solder joints. But fixing these problems can often be a short term solution. The bulbs themselves have a limited lifespan, and the high voltage power supplies are prone to failure. The panels themselves almost always outlive the backlights and high voltage power supplies. The 17″ Dell LCD monitor I found was no exception. When I first plugged it in, it would cycle power on and off continuously, with a notable burning smell. Further inspection revealed a fried power transistor. When i replaced it, the monitor stayed on, but the backlight would flicker on and off, then finally shut off after a few seconds.. The panel was good, but trying to fix the backlight with the proper parts wasn’t really worth it. But maybe I could still save it, or even make it better. After all, it’s just a light. Lights should be user-replaceable things anyway. I mean, a Lite-Brite was the cheapest toy, yet you could at least change the bulb. So here’s the result of my experiment, with help from an old CRT monitor:

Check out this cool Lego mod, a 15″ DIY Lego LCD!

The backlight would come on for a few seconds, off for a few seconds, then repeat. By freeing the Magnavox 15MF400T from its metal case he got it working again, but couldn’t find the source of the short. His solution: build a new case out of non-conductive material. Voilà! We have the 15″ LEGO monitor.

Al Linke, the creator of the DIY Magic Mirror, has just buzzed me on his cool Magic Mirror, which was featured on Instructables as winner of the Halloween contest.

Well, I don’t know how I missed it if it was on Instructables but here it is and Al is actually selling kits you can buy to make a magic mirror yourself.

I have to say, this is really cool stuff, I think I have seen something similar, the Magic Message mirror but this one beats it hands-off as far as using it for different DIY projects is concerned.

You supply the PC, monitor, picture frame, and choose which sensors to use. Build the Magic Mirror Sensor Hub yourself by purchasing this hardware and following these instructions or buy one pre-built. Then plug it into a PC USB port and install the DIY Magic Mirror Software.

This is a nice little hand held device named the PW AC900, that can store plenty of information from many of the worlds important dictionaries and organisations.

It’s nice looking with a cool touch pad that can be written on using the stylus and a five inch LCD colour screen, inside there is about 100 Mb worth of memory, so that will come in handy for storing a bit of data or notes.

Here’s a fun glowing Apple hack for any laptop modders out there who love Apple. An MSI netbook is used here but I am sure you can apply this to any laptop.

After you get the logo cut out and your clear logo fits in there, remove the clear logo and wetsand the whole top to remove the clear coat and MSI logo. You will notice if you centered your apple logo that it WILL NOT cover the “MSI” logo. So you gotta sand it out. This will also take some time, but has to be done! Make sure all the clear coat comes off and your down to the plastic.

Having a good furniture is part of the answer to working more efficiently. Guys over at Ikea hacker have figured out that you can make an LCD monitor stand easily by using some TV shelf and doorstopper parts from IKEA.

It took about 10 minutes to measure and then screw in the 4 door stoppers! Super easy and cheap project!

A Japanese company has released its new Grand HD Cinema, a converter device that will convert USB to HDMI. This will be great for those of you with no HDMI interface.

Just a note, when you buy a new laptop, make sure it has an HDMI output. My $600 Dell laptop does, I simply had to make sure it had one before I bought it.

Also read up on my DIY guide that shows you how to connect your PC to your HDTV.

The Grand HD Cinema does indeed take USB video (along with audio) and upconvert the stream to a 720p HDMI signal that can drive six different HDMI devices. As a means to get clips from PMPs to TVs it certainly makes a lot of sense.

As for how eco-friendly and green the new MacBooks are, here’s what Treehugger have to say on it:

Apple feels the new products are pretty dang eco-friendly. The new MacBooks are arsenic free glass, BFR free, mercury free, PVC free, is Energy Star compliant, the screen is LED and uses 30% less energy, they use 37% smaller packaging, and have earned an EPEAT Gold rating.There are definitely some real pros to the new process, but what happens to all that aluminum that is cut away?

It does definitely look like a great idea, especially if you can refer to the history of why Apple did this on Gizmodo:

It may seem revolutionary, but the method Apple is using derives from the early 20th century monocoque (”single shell”) technique of using an object’s external skin to support structural loads. It has its roots in the airline industry where a price drop in aluminum in the 1920’s made it affordable to meet the demand for stiff, strong, smooth skins that could handle the stress of high altitudes and increasingly powerful aircraft. By the end of WWII, almost all high-performance aircraft were built using monocoque or semi-monocoque technique.

Here’s a cool PSP Hack that shows you how to turn your PSP into a second monitor for your Windows XP-equipped PC.

Installation

Windows application, drivers, etc.

Download the installer below and execute it.

When it comes to the display driver installation, Windows will warn you that the driver is unsigned, let the setup program install it anyway.

After setup has finished, open your display settings and enable the new monitor then move it to the position you like.

Connect your PSP and copy the files from the “psp” folder in the installation directory to the memory stick.

HDTV Hack – How to Connect your PC to HDTV via HDMI/DVI Cables!

This weekend, I had the pleasure of hooking up my friend’s new 52″ Samsung LCD HDTV to his new gaming PC.

If you are like most people, you probably already know how to connect your PC to HDTV via an S-Video Cable.

Now, S-Video is perfectly fine for viewing your PC/laptop on your TV but it won’t give you “HD” resolution of 1080p, 1080i, or 720p.

Most S-Video outputs are only capable of producing upto about 1024×768 pixel resolution and that’s analog signals, meaning your signal will get somewhat affected by noise and not the best way to surf the web on your HDTV.

Now let’s say your TV is capable of HD AND you have DVI Outputs on the back of your PC as shown in the image above.

Then, provided you have a Video graphics card capable of 1080p (which means it can pretty much do 1920×1080 pixels on your HDTV), you will be able to get a perfectly crisp 1920×1080 pixels on your HDTV.

Now, to do this, you need a cable depending on how far your PC is from the HDTV.

The simplest way is to get a HDMI-M to DVI-M cable to connect the DVI side to the PC and HDMI to your HDTV. Here’s a site I found that has really low prices on it. ($32 for 50 feet, I found a 5 foot cable at BestBuy for $60, don’t go there)

Once you are connected, you should be able to surf the web pretty easily on your HDTV depending on how far you sit from it.

Here’s a re-cap of what I just told you in simpler terms:

S-Video – 1024×768 Maximum resolution, Analog signals (suck)
DVI (PC) to HDMI (HDTV) – 1920×1080 Maximum resolution, Digital signals (clean)

Required Hardware:

DVI-capable Graphic Card
HD-capable TV (HDTV)
DVI(male) to HDMI(male) cable

Most people who have bought PC in the last couple years will probably have all the required hardware except the DVI to HDMI cable. If that’s the case, I highly suggest you to buy one online. Don’t buy retail, you will pay 3-5 times more for it.

There you have it, now you know how to take full advantage of your HDTV and watch YouTube and other online videos crisp and clear. Perhaps you are a genius already at this but for those of you who don’t know, I hope this helps you surf on your HDTV. (and take advantage over the crisp, clear 1920×1080 pixel screen)

DIY Chumby HACK – How to hack a 640×480 VGA LCD onto a Chumby!

Here’s a really cool Chumby hack that will allow you to use a bigger 640×480 pixel LCD on your favorite little gadget.

Chumby is different; it is open source, and designed to be hacked. For example, the serial port is spelled out on the silkscreen for you and there’s a backdoor to enable sshd, so it’s not big deal to bring up the console. Because of its hackability, you are enabled to do significant modifications due to the availability of all levels of design documentation—hardware, drivers, and application software. While it would be an enormous task to, for example, open up a Zune and put a larger screen on it, here, in this post, I will show you how to hack a chumby to have a larger, higher-resolution screen without too much effort. The native chumby screen is a 3.5” QVGA (320×240) display, but after you complete this hack, you will be treated to a 5.7” VGA (640×480) display.
