Windows 7 Not Working Well for Netbooks?

In my recent testing of Windows 7 Ultimate with a Triple-Core AMD and 4GB of memory, it performed flawlessly for installing all my XP/Vista programs plus ran about 3-5X faster for rendering HD videos. Well, it seems like Windows 7 has been reported to not work well with netbooks.

This figure is somewhat surprising actually as Microsoft hasn’t tried to keep that fact hidden; indeed they have openly said that Windows 7 starter edition won’t be able to do everything.

The problem seems to lie in the fact that most of the new netbooks on sale are running with the starter edition and upgrading to the more sophisticated Windows 7 Home Premium version is going to cost somewhere in the region of $80, something than many are not happy to pay.

Plus, most of these netbooks are coming with starter editions, meaning the users have to pay for an upgrade.

I don’t think it’s a big hurdle for those of you who know how to downgrade to XP, I don’t really see any advantages of running Windows 7 on netbooks anyways. With limitations in hardware, netbooks weren’t designed for full computing but rather for simply web browsing and things you need to get done on the go.

Of course, for me, I will be getting a slightly beefed up version of ASUS EEE PC netbooks, which is the 13.3″ ASUS UL30A with 12 hours of battery life, 4GB of memory, and a Intel Dual-Core ULV processor.

Well, I am going to be getting a new laptop soon because although my Eee PC 1000HE netbook is working great, I think I need a bit more CPU power and slightly bigger screen as my current netbook is great but may not work for longer travels to trips like the CES 2010 in Las Vegas where I will have to be using my new Canon 7d to upload HD videos in real-time as I interview people.

I just found this cool netbook/nettop hack on how to make your HD videos play flawlessly on Amazon, this might work well for my Eee PC as my Youtube videos lag badly.

Can be frustrating, but there is a solution:

> Deactivate deblocking filter on all the codecs that support it (H.264/MPEG-4 AVC)

How ?

Install klite codec pack, and at the end of the setup, choose deactivate deblocking.

If you use build-in codecs player programs such GOMPlayer, there are options for quit deblocking filters.

This way you can play even 720p hardly encoded videos, you will see some blocks here and there, but no frame skipping or audio cuts.

Alternately, if you need more performance, you can choose 16bit of color depth.

Mac Hack – How to Clean CPU Fan and Replace Hard Disk on a PowerBook G4!

Recently, one of my friends who is a plumber in San Francisco, gave me an old PowerBook G4. Well, since I am not an Apple fan boy (sorry Apple fan boys), I’ve figured I can install Windows XP.

I ran into the big problem that Windows XP is not supported on a PowerPC CPU, which is what the PowerBook G4 has. Since I do also run a bunch of linux machines at my home, I figured I could run some linux on the PowerBook. It turns out there’s a bunch of PowerPC-supported linux systems including Ubuntu, which I ended up installing. (I should have a HOWTO guide on that coming up pretty soon so watch for that!)

Of course, this Powerbook G4 has more problems as the hard disk was dead so I had to replace the hard disk. I also figured I could take some shots on how to replace the hard disk while I was doing it.

Most laptops are pretty easy to disassemble once you get the hang of it. You simply remove all the screws and most of the time, the laptop comes apart pretty easily.

So here it goes, step-by-step instructions on how to take an old Powerbook G4 apart. (other Powerbooks should be similar)

Note this is the very first time I have worked with Mac laptops in my whole life but I did it my first time so it must be easy. (and you should be able to do it too)

Tools required:

couple small screw drivers. (You can get a set of these at your dollar store by the way)

1 1.5mm hex screw driver.

Step By Step Instructions

1) You will need to get the battery out, simply use a coin and turn the big metal thing until the battery pops out like below:

2) Now, unscrew the 4 screws that hold the memory compartment in the middle of the laptop.

3) Pull the metal tabs on the left and right side of the memory. The memory should pop out easily.

4) Take all the memory out, usually no more than two since there’s two memory slots.

5) Take the four long screws at the top(where the LCD screen is connected to).

6) Also take the 2 screws off near where the memory slots are. (Oops, I lost one of the screws while trying to take a pictures. Don’t worry too much about lost screws when you open up a laptop, I find that you don’t have to be so perfect, your laptop will still function fine with couple lost screws.)

7) Next take the two screws off one of the sides of the Powerbook G4.

Take the three screws on the other side of the Powerbook G4. Don’t you just love Macs? They are so easy to disassemble.

9) Take the four screws on the top of the Powerbook G4.

10) Now using the hex screwdriver thingee and open the two hexa-nuts at the front of the laptop where your keyboard is.

11) The top of the Mac Powerbook G4 should pop right out easily like this.

12)Now jiggle the keyboard a little (being careful not to pull the too attached lines) and the whole thing should be fully detachable from the main board.

13) Set the keyboard laying against the LCD, and gently pull the orangish looking line, it should pop right off. (This is the touchpad connection to your Powerbook’s motherboard btw.)

14) Now, pull the side tabs off the keyboard connectors. The white-striped keyboard connector should slide out easily.

15) Now you have the keyboard/touchpad module completely detached! Yey, you can now pretty much access most of your PowerBook G4’s internals including the CPU fan (Left arrow), graphic card fan (Right arrow), hard disk (blue arrow), and more.

16) Since the hard disk was broken, I figured this Powerbook must be super old and checked out both the CPU and graphic card fans. (I found out that there were already super clean but this should be a handy guide for you if you have an old Powerbook that makes a lot of CPU fan noise and need to clean them.)

You can skip to Step 27 here if you simply need to swap out your hard drive on the Powerbook G4 but if you want to clean/check your CPU fans, keep going.

How to Clean the Graphic Card CPU fan

First, I decided to check out the graphic card fan (the one on the right), simply pop off the LCD connector horizontally. It should pop right off pretty easily.

17) Pull the LCD connector and stickers away from you. (Yes, VOID the warranty, you probably don’t have it on this old Mac anyways!)

18) Pull the fan connector out.

19) Unscrew the two screws and the fan assembly should be “bent” out. Check the metal fins to see if there’s any dust piled up and if it is, CLEAN! After cleaning, re-assemble the graphic fan card reversing the steps from this step to Step 16. (then continue)

20) Next, we can take a look at the CPU fan to see if dust has piled up. CPU fans are #1 cause of laptop failures these days so…

How to Clean the Main CPU fan!

Pull the metal connector thingee (the copper lookin thingee) up, it should pop right out. I am not sure what this is for but oh well…

21) Next, pull the CPU fan connector out.

22) Take the connector next to it out so you can access the CPU fan case.

23) Unscrew the four screws holding the CPU fan.

24) Clean the metal fans if it’s dirty. Like I said, mine was super clean. I think someone just dropped the Powerbook G4 on the ground and broke the hard disk.

25) Clean the fans, metal fins and put it back together by reversing steps from this step to Step 20.

How to Replace the Hard Disk!

Next, we will replace the broken 60GB hard disk with a new 80GB hard disk.

Simply pull the harddisk connector on the top of the harddisk.

26) Unscrew the 2 big screws on the left of the hard drive of the Powerbook G4.

27) Pull that thing out of the way…

28) There’s two screws on the right side of the hard disk you need to unscrew (red circles) and pull the metal tab thingee out.

There’s also two screws on the left side of the hard disk you need to unscrew a little (blue circles), you don’t need to take them out completely, just unscrew them so they are loose and you can pull the hard disk out. Also note to take the connector out (red arrow) if you have hard time accessing the screws.

29) Jiggle the hard disk out, it should come out. If you get to this step, swapping the new hard drive you be a piece of cake. Simply swap the harddisk connector and the plastic isolation thingee to the new drive and reverse steps from this step to Step 25.

30) Now you have done it! Give yourself a thumbs up for replacing the hard drive! Mac Powerbook is a really, really old laptop from the stone ages but the new Macbooks should actually be a lot easier than this. (or any other laptops for that matter)

Most of the new laptops also allow easier access to the harddisk and the CPU fans without disassembling most of your laptop. You might void warranty but if you learn to disassemble laptops, you should be able to open up most laptops today with a screwdriver. I find disassembling laptops addicting now, I didn’t know it was this easy.

31) Assemble everything back by reversing steps from Step 16 through Step 1.

32) Boot your laptop to make sure everything is working and you didn’t forget to connect any connectors. If you did, you will have to repeat and go into vicious cycle until you get it right. Just take a deep breath and take everthing SLOWLY. Don’t need to be in a hurry ever.

33) If you are like me, just install Ubuntu PowerPC version of Jaunty 9.04, which works well right out of the box including Touchpad, keyboard, LCD, Wifi, and sound.

This is the very first Mac laptop I own and disassembled, and of course, it doesn’t run Mac OSX. (will have to wait another 20 years before I consider doing that. But there’s Hackintosh for those of you who want to run Mac OSX on PCs… and why would I want to do that???)

(Breathing new, fresh open-source life into the old Mac Powerbook G4 with Ubuntu Jaunty…yey go Linus! Now I have 2 mobile linux devices, a Palm Pre and a Powerbook.)

I make T-shirts myself too and the only thing I would need to learn is “how to sew”. Well, I will get to that eventually or maybe I will outsource it to my girlfriend.

Since my mom’s birthday is coming up (Hi Mom!), I figured it might be neat to make her a nifty laptop sleeve emblazoned with the covers of her favorite newspapers (The New York Times and The Washington Post). Just to make it extra special, I used a photo-editing program to change the news a little, but you could also leave it as is – especially if something interesting was covered.

Wow, take a look at this video of these 5 “professional” burglars who stole 23 MacBook Pros in just 31 seconds! That is impressive regardless of what they did. These thieves must have done speed lap training beforehand.

Now, I am not saying you should ever steal anything but if you are going to be a burglar, you gotta be as fast as these guys and be smart. (I feel like I am watching a mini-version of ocean’s eleven…)

I’ve seen so many dumb criminals on COPS, it’s a relief that the media finally lets some truth through, that there are a lot of smart criminals out there. I truly wish there’s a live national show called THIEVES that also show how many criminals get away with things. (not that I promote that kind of stuff but I just don’t want to see dumb people on TV!!! I rather see the ALL OF IT! Wouldn’t you? That is why I don’t watch COPS.) I think the more people know about the truth, the better they will be prepared for it instead of lying in the dark. (and freaking out when stuff like this happens.)

As for Apple, I think they need to tighten up the security, I am sure they can easily install some software on the MacBooks so they can “trace” those laptops. I can’t believe that Apple store didn’t even have laptop locks at the least, that’s a shame on Apple, shame indeed.

It’s also the fancy glass doors that don’t do anything but leave the store vulnerable to thieves. (And I am sure we will start seeing some metal doors at Apple Stores soon.)

FYI, glass can easily be broken by throwing the ceramic from spark plugs. (something I learned from one of my old pals who used to be a real gangster in LA. I wouldn’t use it for stealing but would be a great idea for getting yourself out of your car if you drive your car into the water somehow.)

In a sense, it’s like you don’t have a virus protection on your computer and you complain when you get a virus.

In a sense, if you have vulnerability, it’s going to be exploited of course! Glass doors are probably the dumbest things to have at a store that sells gadget items ranging couple thousand bucks each.

For comparison, I hate shopping for gadgets at Wal-mart. All of their laptops on display are non-working plastic models, not even REAL laptops! Now I see why they do it.

Again, I think these criminals are probably a lot smarter than Steve Jobs, they probably won’t catch them.

Even, Engadget calls these thieves, “impressive”.

The ABC reporter, Dan Cuellar in the video below calls it, “spectacular”.

I am getting a sense that people are supporting this, am I right?

What do you think, impressive or should they be punished?

As for me, Apple deserves at least this for “forcing” iPods into proprietary audio files i.nstead of worldwide accepted MP3s.

After all the millions of dollars they racked in from iPods and iPhones, this isn’t really big news, maybe just a pimple on their face.

Face it. This all could easily have been avoided if you locked all the display laptops in a secure storage area before you close the store. (and it can obviously be done pretty quickly, less than a minute it seems.) Hmmm… I wonder why jewelry stores do that, does anyone have any ideas? (Sarcastic)

99% of most laptop problems are caused by your CPU cooling fans (these are the metal thingees that are next to your CPU) being blocked by dust. Most of the time, 6 months of everyday use will cause enough dust to collect in your cooling fans, which will either make your laptop run really slow or simply freeze up.

When dust collects in your cooling fans, your CPU fan will no longer work with you but actually against you, building heat on your laptop’s CPU, causing all kinds of havoc among frozen screens and boot up problems.

But don’t worry, it’s very easy to fix the problem, you simply usually need a screwdriver and carefully locate where the CPU cooling fans are. Simply take all the dust out and your laptop will be running good as new.

The reason I post this today is because my Dell 1525 laptop had the problem of making weird fan noises and freezing up after 9 months of constant use.

Remember I mentioned the steering wheel laptop stand for cars? Well, here’s a better version and one you can make for under $30 using PVC pipes from Home Depot.

One thing I’d have to say, this DIY is so clever, you make use of your cup-holder unlike commercial laptop stands where it must be bolted down. WOW, great job Mike!

Of course, don’t forget the “standing laptop stand” that lets you take the laptop stand with you while you walk.

The commercially made units are pricey though. Several models I have looked at cost close to $300. Ouch! I suppose I could make one like the commercially made units, but they are made of metal, and I’m not much of a metal-worker. The commercially made units also bolt to the floor and take time and tools to install and remove. I always thought there had to be a better way. One day I had a brainstorm. I figured out a quick and easy way to build a laptop tray for my Tacoma that cost a little over $30!

As I’ve mentioned, Eee PC 1000HE is probably the best netbook on the market today, that’s why I have one. If you got one of these mini beasts, you might want to also know that it’s possible to hack it with status LEDs that can tell you when your friend tweeted you on Twitter or even get notified when someone write on your Facebook wall.

This is an interesting little modification that i have completed on my EeePC901. Based on an Atmel aTiny45 processor it’s function is relatively simple, but as it is built from scratch, the build took some interesting twists and turns. Not only that, but it also has a nice little social story that for me was part of what made it such an engaging little project.

Best Netbook Review – Eee PC 1000HE!

For the last 3 months, I have been enjoying the best netbook ever, the Eee PC 1000HE. It’s the very first netbook I’ve bought but I can say that there’s enough cool little features that it allows me to be practically everywhere. I am no longer stuck in my home to get my work done. A lot of times, you will find me near Ocean Beach in San Francisco, firing away more blog posts. (Yes, I do setup my tent too.)

Anyways, let me tell you “everything” you wanted to know about this little Eee PC beast.

First off, this Eee PC 1000HE has a battery life of over 5 hours. (The specs say 9 hours but I found more along 5 hours, which is still great over conventional laptops.)

Second, this Eee PC 1000HE’s touchpad is just like the iPhone, you can scroll with two fingers, zoom in and out, and more. Just this feature let’s me do things with a 1024×600 pixel screen, much faster than traditional touchpads or even an external mouse. I just love the fact that I don’t have to carry a separate mouse to get my work done fast.

Third, Eee PC 1000HE is cheap, only $383.94 on Amazon. I don’t have to worry if I drop it or lose it, I can always get another one as it’s about the price of an iPhone.

If you are a road warrior, I highly recommend you to get one of these for those short trips where you do not need a full-fledged laptop. I also carry a Sprint USB broadband modem, which lets me connect to the internet practically everywhere I go where there’s a cellular connection.

Every one of my friends I have showed my netbook to are amazed and more amazed when I tell them how much I bought it for.

I even took it to Disneyland last month, all blogging away while I waited to take pictures with Mickey Mouse. Yes, you can actually computer while walking too because it weighs only 3.2 pounds.

This IS the best netbook on the market right now. ASUS practically “invented” netbooks and I don’t see how you can go wrong with this one.

I plan on actually getting a couple more, 1 for my bedroom, 1 for my bathroom, and another one for couch-surfing.

Here’s a great way to convert your MSI Wind netbook to be stereo-microphone capable. I am sure it’d be very similar with other netbooks such as the Eee PCs.

I bought myself a pink MSI Wind when they were first released last year with the intention of using it for university and as a perfect travelling laptop. The Wind is great in many aspects, but the stock inbuilt microphone is severely lacking. It is noisy and not sensitive enough for general use. You have to have your mouth 10cm away from the mic for it to be useable.
