I am sure it’s going to take some thought and time before you can finish this project but these pics should help you and be confident that it can indeed be done.

I love to tinker with hardware etc. so I wanted to make something quite unique for a case. I have seen many nice and creative cases before but none of them were made out of a bottle. In November I bought an industrial 3.5″ SBC board (with Socket370). For the project I selected a 1.5 litre Ballantine’s bottle for case. That was the proper size and shape for the task at hand.

Gadgets are becoming energy efficient these days and by looks of these covers, accessories are going back to the caveman days where the men used to go out hunting and bringing home an animal to eat, if they had gadgets back then this is probably what they would have covered it in.

Computer DIY – How to Clean Your CPU Fans!

Today, I decided to clean my desktop computer’s CPU fans since my computer kept slowing down a lot lately. I knew it probably was due to my CPU fans collecting with dust as I have been using this desktop PC for about 2 years without any cleaning.

To my surprise, I found that it was indeed my CPU fans that weren’t working at all as the metal fins have been all stuck with large collection of dust. You can see later in this DIY how dirty my CPU fan was…

So, here’s how to clean your CPU fans. (This is for most desktop PCs.)

1) First, you will need to open up your desktop. Usually, there’s either couple screws or some computers like mine have a “hand-screw” that allow the side cover to come off easily.

2) Once you open up the computer case, locate your CPU fan, it’s usually the biggest fan thingee.

3) Once located, you can unscrew the four screws holding it to the motherboard.

4) Also make sure to unplug the CPU fan wire that connects to your motherboard so you can detach it.

5) Once unscrewed and CPU fan wires disconnected, the CPU fan should come off the CPU easily. (You can see my Intel CPU on the lower-right here as I take the fan out.)

6) A quick look at the CPU fan assembly showed me that the metal fins (the thing that actually cools down your CPU) was stuck with “massive” collection of dust! Yuck, this is why my computer was running super slow…

When the metal fins are blocked like this, your CPU fan will actually have no real effect on cooling your CPU. Thus, it was like my computer was running with no CPU fan.

7) The CPU fan part should easily snap off the metal fins, just carefully un-snap it out.

Once I had the CPU fan and metal fins separated, I saw this picture below:

9) Next, clean your CPU fan fins and the metal fin thingee with a lightly wetted paper towel. You can also blow on it afterwards to get all the dust out. You don’t have to clean it perfectly, just get rid of the big stuff that’s clogging your CPU fan.

10) Assemble and put the CPU fan back on your motherboard and boot up your computer.

You should now see that your computer runs much faster like when you bought it new.

How often should you clean your CPU fans on a desktop?

I would say about once a year and maybe even every 6 months if you use your desktop computer a lot.

This method should work on all kinds of desktop computers including Macs. Procedure might be slightly different but if you know how to use a screwdriver, you should be able to clean your CPU fans pretty easily.

What are the benefits of having clean CPU fans?

Well, first, your computer will run much faster since your CPU doesn’t heat up as easily under load when you are running heavy applications like Photoshop, Outlook, or watching YouTube videos.

Plus, your CPU will practically last forever so long as they never overheat. I have a 20 year old 386DX-25 CPU that still runs after 20 years. Computer CPUs are generally failure-proof for a really long time so long as you make sure it’s cooled correctly.

Computers in general last a freakin’ long time, it’s usually the hard drive that dies first or CPU from not cleaning your CPU fans.

There’s also great free programs out there that will let you dynamically control CPU speeds so your CPU is more efficient, uses less power, and last even longer. I will have more on that soon but if you haven’t checked out your CPU fans in over a year, I highly suggest you to check them out.

You can also “replace” your CPU fans to better after-market ones. For that, I highly suggest getting one with bigger “amperes (amps)” ratings. For example, 2 Amp rated PC fan will run faster than a 0.20 Amp PC fan. You might have to shop around though for the best PC fan out there as it varies depending on where you go.

Well, that’s about it, you should now be able to have a computer that runs faster and last longer. Bye~

This is an interesting computer that has been designed to save space as it can fit into a gap where other desktop units cannot. It is still slightly larger than some other compact computers, but the idea is sound and its neat shapes makes it easier on the eye. These are currently being shown in Korea, so there is no pricing or availability at the moment, although there are several designs to choose from, so there is a lot going on with Ripple, we just need some more details.

The iPhone is a brilliant but as with any gadget that is carried around or moved about a lot the chances of it getting damaged or scratched get higher all of the time. Despite how great the iPhone is, with a scratch right across the screen nobody is going to want to know.

However, this case is the Factron Quattron version and as you can see, it is bomb proof or close enough. Yet despite being built like a tank the device can still be used as normal, now that is cool.

DIY Steampunk Frankenstein PC Mod!

DIY Pyramid PC Case Mod!

If you are looking to mod your PC, a pyramid PC case mod such as this one not be a bad idea after all. You might even be able to sell bunch of these as pyramid-scheme business too.

1- Drilled and installed 2x 80mm fans on each side of the case for better air flow.
2- Installed Sound Sensitive Cathodes in the bottom of the case with sensitivity control knob at the back of the case.
3- The 3.5 pay at the top of the case has been modified to fit the 500GB WD hard drive instead of the designed place at the bottom of the case.
4- Water cooling (Tide Water Plus meant for cooling dual GPU has been modified to cool Intel Q6600 with the help of Swift Apogee GT water Block CPU socket 775). Non conductive Fluid-XP has been used as the coolant of choice for extra safety.
5- A display LED screen on top of the CD-Rom has been installed to add an interactive touch to the Pyramid PC Mod. See you YouTube video:

The case is 7.5 lbs, made of laser cut very high quality black and silver aluminum. Its base is 19×19 and its 25 inches high.

It is a shame when you think about all of the work that goes into the production of an Apple device, only to find that when they have finished their usefulness they are broken up and discarded, or so we thought.

At least some parts do get reused like this side panel from the Mac G4 that has been made into a clock, it measures sixteen inch square and only requires a single AA battery for power. It has to be worth the $13 just for the work that has gone into it.

DIY Computer in a Briefcase

Check out this computer in a briefcase. It seems like a great idea for building your own rugged laptop for rugged work.

The next step will be to install my device programmer so it just shows a socket and indicator, and some black paint on the monitor brackets. The monitor is safely behind a piece of Lexan but it’s hard to see. The reason for this project is that I dual boot, which is easier from 2 seperate drives, and I need a third drive to use for storage of gigs and gigs of schematics. The drive in the middle was to be my windows drive but I found it had given up the ghost so a new WD3200 lives there now. The whole thing sends a little warm air out the back but nothing gets hot.

Do you need a custom PC that’s going to provide a LOT of cooling power? Well, you are in luck as there’s this hack that shows you how to make a mineral water-cooled PC without costing you an arm and a leg like the PC mod that uses no PC fans, or the pool-cooled PC.

We built this system because with all the oil cooled projects out there, no one built a system that looked good and functioned well! After seeing all the other projects, we had a lot of ideas of how we could do it better and more easily. Many projects used vegetable oil, which would go rancid after a short time. The mineral oil does not have this problem, and is completely clear. We also wanted to use an appropriate enclosure — the Toms Hardware system used a clear acrylic case, and they had to painstakingly seal each rear connector to keep the oil from leaking. We wanted to put the ports on top to solve that problem the simple way. Other people have built systems in aquariums before, but they were always oversized and square. When we found the Eclipse System 6 Aquarium, we were excited to see an aquarium that was absolutely perfect in size — you couldn’t go any smaller. In addition, we had questions about performance and long term effects. Our initial tests, which we go over below, answer the questions about cooling performance. At the bottom of the page, we’ve posted subsequent follow ups after a few months and even a year, to let you know how a system like this performs in the long term.

Sometimes it pays to really think out of the box and surprisingly, Antec, the company famous for making enclosures for custom PCs, have released their new “Open-Air” PC Case dubbed “Antec Skeleton”.

From what I can tell, this is a great idea for any of you trying to take your PC to the max by overclocking the sh*t out of it.

Okay, don’t get me wrong, this ISN’T the world’s smallest Linux PC. Actually, the smallest Linux PC maybe even smaller as embedded Linux has evolved.

But from PC users’ standpoint, this Linux PC pictured above isn’t big at all, in fact, it’s as small as an apple designed for use in spaceships.

What’s the point? It looks cool and eventually we should be able to replace bulky desktop PCs with these little min-versions.

So, would you like a Space Cube? Tough luck, at least for the moment. Outside of Japan – where the Cube has been developed by the Shimafuji Corporation – your best bet is to keep watching the Star Dundee website. It’s an offshoot of the Space Systems Research Group of the University of Dundee. They’re planning to sell the Space Cube once a few technical issues are ironed out and, unfortunately, it’ll be a bit more expensive than the price we found before – around $325. Instead, this remarkable PC will probably be going for around £1,500.

Here’s a really cool PC Case mod, a DIY on how to make mirror-finish PC Case surface.

Spray paint your PC case and give it a mirror finish.
You won’t need expensive painting equipment and supplies.
You’ll find most of the products I used at hardware and
automotive stores.

3M Perfect It III Compounds and 3M Imperial Hand Glaze is usually sold in Autobody Supply Stores, but I’ve linked them to an online resource.
I prefer using carnauba type car wax, but any automotive wax will work fine.
Regardless of wax used, you must allow paint to cure for at least 30 days before applying wax.

Wow, who would’ve thought you could make a Lego PC?

Most things worked out amazingly well, like the ATX power switches fitting perfectly snug in the space of a 1×1 brick, and the LEDs fitting perfectly in a 1×1 brick with hole. I hot glued a 1×1 brick to the power and reset switches to act as buttons. I also put a dab of hot glue on each corner of the ATX I/O plate, which was just a little too small to fit snugly.

I also realized that I underestimated the cohesive strength of Lego bricks. When I first put the top on, I couldn’t get it off! I had to add a nearly complete border of flat plates from my spare parts to get it to detach easily.

Here’s a cool PC, all made out of wood. Wait, is wood necessarily an eco-friendly thingee? Recycled wood maybe, just be careful that the PC manufacturers are not using “eco-friendly” terms to market the product when it’s really not.

In this case, I am not sure, anyone wanna clarify my ignorance on the matter?

This is the type of computer that every eco friendly person is going to want, it is sort of a cross between the style of the 1960’s and the technology of the today. Making it sort of eco tech in nature, but for this sort equipment you are going to have to pay the price, at the moment these computers start at around $1,500.

DIY – How to Make an Egyptian PC Case!

Anyone up for an Egyptian PC case mod???

Looks freakin’ authentic. Maybe they dugg it out of an actual pyramid…

Conceived and constructed by Chris Kramer (a.k.a “Jadragon”), his EgyptMod PC is detailed with intricate hieroglyphics and encrusted with jewels. I’m especially mesmerized by Eye of Ra detail crafted from brass and inlaid with polished malachite and verisite.

In the QuetzalMod Feathered Serpent case, I suggested that one did not have to use anything other than some simple craft techniques to create a unique, personalized, computer chassis. However, for this project, I applied some of my more specialized jewelry metal-working and lapidary (gemstone cutting and polishing) skills. Add a dash of rough stone working, sixty or seventy pounds of limestone floor tile, and a stuffed dog and I created my EgyptianMod case. Oh yeah, I did add a computer system board and some other components in there somewhere too.

You know I ran into this post today, it’s a Ford Bronco PC. Well, the first thing it reminded me was OJ Simpson. Weird what the media could do to your mind. I try to stay off TV and any real news these days for that reason. Maybe one day I will buy my own island and live there with a dog and a cool boat.

Anyways, check out the Ford Bronco PC, all custom built from scratch, lovin’ the pics.

I started with the idea of an mp3 player for my garage because all my CD’s were getting scratched and dirty. At the time (Jan. 2004) I was planning an upgrade to my gaming computer and figured I would have extra parts left over. So I tried thinking of something that would ”fit in” in a garage setting. Since I had recently finished working on my ‘69 Ford Bronco, I decided that would make a cool looking computer case and began taking measurements of the Bronco and major computer parts to find a scale that would work well. I found that 1/5th scale worked great. I also wanted it to be self contained and compact as possible and still use desktop components.

It seems that computer users are looking at the actual case of their PC’s as well as what is in the case. There are a lot people who doing some great work on these cases and why not, there is a market for them and why shouldn’t some make some cash out of a booming business?

Of course we have to blame Apple for this trend, they brought the iMac etc which made people think that they did not have to just stick to the conventional way of thinking when it come to a simple concept like the case of a PC.

Wow, check out this new awesome lookin’ Coolmaster COSMOS SPACEY Design ATX CASE! I’d love to have a sample, will they send us a sample? (This line does work by the way, we’ve gotten so many cool samples from various different companies…yey! DragonLasers is sending us their latest laser soon for review also….)

Weighing in at close to 17kg, empty, this is not a case you’ll haul around to LAN parties throughout the country, however you can be sure that what you install inside will be kept safe and cool. The Cosmos comes with 4x 120mm installed at different locations in the case.

You can install up to 7x 3.5” devices if you use the extra 5.25”>3.5” bay, otherwise the number is still an impressive 6 internal HDD bays. There are 5x 5.25” bays to fit a variety of CD/DVD and other 5.25” devices.

The case is large enough to fit ATX, a format used for most enthusiast motherboards on the market, but also Extended ATX boards, which makes this case a candidate for a high end workstation, where dual socket motherboards take up more room.
