Japanese Pet Clock counts time in dog years!

Posted in A+Featured Gadgets, Animals, Cats, Consumer, Cool, Design, Dogs, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, Gifts, Pets by max on the September 26th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Here’s a brilliant pet clock from Japan.  It’s a clock customized for your dog or cat as time accelerated 7 times so you get a real “dog” (cat) years for keeping track of how old your pet is. (in his/her terms)

Thankfully though, this Pet Care Clock from Sega Toys is designed to do the difficult math for you. It’s your standard LCD desk clock that shows the time and date, but once you enter your pet’s birth date and specify their approximate size, the clock will also show you their supposed age. (Calculated with a variety of different formulas.) And if you’re the type who likes to celebrate a pet’s birthday you’re in luck. In theory if your dog is aging 7x as fast as you, they should also have 7 birthdays a year, and this clock will actually alert you to every single one of them so you can remember to pick up a gift and a cake on the way home.

Finally, you wil be able to give your dog an automatic pet door that will activate via RFID.

PlexiDor Electronic “reads” the key code on the RFID key and opens only for your pet. Panel unlocks and slides up like a mini garage door. The main frame has a low profile of just 1 5/8″ in thickness. Door plugs into household outlet or can be hardwired.

Chocolate, Is it Bad for Dogs?

Posted in Animals, Consumer, Cool, Educational, Food, Medical, Pets, health by max on the July 16th, 2008 at 12:33 pm

If you are a dog owner, you might have heard that chocolate is poisonous to dogs.  Well, according to sources, it is toxic, but not unless the dog eats a certain amount.  In other words, chocolate may have to be treated sorta like alcohol for dogs and do in moderation.

We’ve all heard it, “Don’t give your dog chocolate it will kill him”. We’ll how true is it you’re probably wondering. Do I have to rush him to an emergency vet if he ate one of my M&M’s?

The truth is chocolate contains theobromine that is toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. This is a xanthine compound in the same family of caffeine, and theophylline.

The good news is that it takes, on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine 100-150 mg/kg to cause a toxic reaction. Although there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, animal size and chocolate concentration.

DIY - How to Make Automatic Cat Water Dispenser!

DIY - How to Make Automatic Cat Water Dispenser!

Here’s a really cool DIY that shows you how to make an automatic cat water dispenser so your kitty can drink water straight from the faucet!

So, I built the Cat Faucet so the cats could turn the water on and off for themselves. As a kit, I would rate this medium complexity. The electronics are simple and straight-forward but you also need to do some mechanical work and some plumbing to complete the project, which raises the complexity.

Dog Tracking GPS System!

Posted in Animals, Consumer, Cool, Gadgets, Pets, gps, technology by max on the July 2nd, 2008 at 12:00 pm

Dog Tracking GPS System!

Although the dog tracking GPS system from Garmin looks to be unnecessary for tracking dogs, (maybe its main purpose is for hunting dogs) I can recall countless times when I lost my dog in my neighborhood, only to find him 20 minutes, happy after his little lone-trip.

Now, this dog tracking system can be great if you tend to lose your dog a lot.

The Astro GPS Dog Tracking System requires very little configuration straight out of the box, and is extremely simple to use.  Once the transmitter and receiver acquire a GPS signal, the receiver automatically lets users know the location of their dog.  Unlike old radio telemetry collars, the Astro features a dog page that shows the precise direction and distance to a dog – even indicating if it is running, on point, or treeing quarry – and does it all without the annoyance of beeper collars.  Unlike cellular tracking systems, there are no subscriptions or setup fees required to use the device.

Pet Toilet Water Bowl!

Don’t drink out of the toilet!   This one’s okay though.

“Don’t drink out of the…” Oh well, in this case it’s OK. Our pet water bowl is a real conversation piece-guests will surely be amused when Fido quenches his thirst in the “commode”! It’s easy to use: Just place a filled, 2-liter plastic bottle (not included) into the “tank” and watch as gravity forces fresh water into the “bowl.” Bowl fills as needed.
