It is really surprising when we realise that 3D has been around for decades, there are movies dating back to sixties that were film in 3D of course the effect is not quite to standard of James Cameron’s “Avatar” but then again those filmmakers had limited budgets. but today 3D is creeping into all sorts of sectors and in this Top Five we are going to be looking at just a few of these technological breakthroughs and just to see if 3D is really all it is being cracked up to be!
Panasonic launch the LUMIX 3D1 camera
The doubles lens feature gives this camera away being capable of taking 3D video and images, but it can also take traditional 2D images and video too, because sometimes 2D is enough and it is great for the consumer to have a choice! However, there is much more to the LUMIX 3D1 making it 3D entertainment device.
According to Darin Pepple, who is the Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company;
“Panasonic continues to lead the industry in 3D entertainment, giving consumers the opportunity to create their own content and then view it within their homes, and the new LUMIX 3D1 is an innovative digital camera that excels with its 3D imaging technologies, but also offers outstanding 2D photo capture options. With its twin-lens design, the LUMIX 3D1 can even shoot HD video through one lens and 2D photos from the other – thus getting still and moving content simultaneously, a unique shooting feature which Panasonic provides so users can stretch their creativity.”
Prices will start at around $500

New 3D with no screens required
This is new 3D technology, it requires no screen in order to display an image, like a hologram, it projects the actual 3D image into thin air using a selection of green, red and blue lasers. This tech was initially worked on by AIST and Keio University back in 2006, but finished off by Burton who is currently showing this tech off!
According to the developers of new True 3D technology, Burton, they said;
“Most current 3D devices project pictures onto a 2D screen, and make the pictures appear 3D through an optical illusion. However, this device actually shows images in mid-air, so a feature of this system is that it enables 3D objects to be viewed naturally. This system can create about 50,000 dots per second, and its frame rate is currently about 10-15 fps. But we’re working to improve the frame rate to 24-30 fps.”
This is new tech and so is not on sale!
