Buddy press is the best turn key solution but without good knowledge of theme modification with css and perhaps some plugin mod knowledge with some php it won't be the new facebook. Buddypress is becoming better and it is a solid foundation for peopl with some skills. I reccomend looking at paid scripts for social networking and you can likely find a more turn key solution. I am running Beaver.com ( www.beaver.com ) off of a paid script and I will be developing custom features for it soon too. http://beaver.com is much easier to develop from a true social betworking script than wordpress. I do love wordpress and it's my favorite script oin the net. Onc you master wpmu there is limitless possibilities.
