DIY iPhone HACK - How to get Free Online Magazines!

Posted in Consumer, Cool, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, HOWTO, Hack, cell phones, iPhone by max on the June 11th, 2008 at 11:02 pm

Well, here’s another cool hack that lets you get free online magazines using the same hack to get free wifi at Starbucks.

You have an iPhone, or the handy User Agent Switcher for Firefox, there are a couple of sites that offer free digital versions of several popular magazines. I guess the idea is to try and capture email addresses, but you can cancel through the input boxes and get straight to the content fairly easily.

If you are using Firefox, you can fake your browser into reporting itself to web servers as an iPhone by downloading User Agent Switcher and adding an “iPhone” entry with the following user agent string under Tools->User Agent Switcher->Options:

Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419 (United States)

Once you’ve switched to that user agent profile, most sites will think you are browsing from the iPhone platform and display the content that is targeted to that device - in this case, free magazines. The two sites that provide magazine content targeted to the iPhone are:

DIY Wifi HACK - How to Get Free Wifi from Starbucks and AT&T Hotspots!

Here’s a cool little hack that let’s you get free wifi from Starbucks or AT&T Hotspots!

Basically, you change the “User-Agent” to iPhone User Agent, which is the header part of HTTP transmission.

Then you put in the phone number of any of your friends’ iPhone. I personally know about 3 people in my cellphone address book, so this should be piece of cake.

For Firefox, you can download User Agent Switcher Plugin to change the User Agent.

Definitely, this is the easiest hack I’ve seen so far for cracking Wifi hotspots.

Here’s how to do it on a MAC:

    1. Open Safari while connected to a AT&T wifi
    2. Enter the Preferences, select the Advanced tab, and then select Show the Develop menu in the menu bar
    3. From the Develop menu select User Agent
    4. Select the iPhone User-Agent
    5. The page will reload and ask for a geniune iPhone number. Everybody has a friend with an iPhone, right?
    6. Welcome to free internet from Starbucks

Nokia 8800 Arte - For Show and no Go!

Well, I have to tell you the truth now. The truth? I did get to test all the Nokia 8800 series at the Nokia booth couple weeks ago at Web 2.0 Expo 2008.

The reason why I didn’t post my pics or videos is partly I didn’t have time to and also because the web browsers on the new Nokia are so horrible. They are not even recommended for any kind of web browsing as most sites will break.

However, I did find Nokia E90 had a great browser. Nokia needs to put that browser on their new phones.

I think all cellphone manufacturers should at least have a phone that lives up to the iPhone standards.

iPhone’s Safari supports Javascript, AJAX, and CSS among many other things Windows Mobile and Opera Mobile doesn’t support.

Now, if we can just get some WiMax to come through, that’d make perfect combo.

My suggestion? If you don’t care about the internet browsing capability, the Nokia looks great and you can get one but for me, it’s really “for show and no go” if the browser isn’t up to iPhone standards.

DIY iPhone HACK - Jailbreak that iPhone!

DIY iPhone HACK - Jailbreak that iPhone!

Yey, although there has been numerous Jailbreak HOWTOs for the iPhone since the birth of the “Safari-browsing” device, LifeHacker shows you a clear and easy method to jailbreak that iPhone. (Jailbreak is btw a aftermarket firmware/software for your iPhone. jic)

The screenshot app does work; I’m not entirely certain on this point, but I think it required the reinstallation of the BSD Subsystem. Your mileage may vary. That said, I think the 1.1.3 trade-off is worth it, and hopefully—if Apple puts together a reasonable system for downloading and installing applications once the SDK is released next month and apps don’t cost an arm and a leg—this is the last jailbreak you’ll ever need.

Quick Browser HACK - Google and Yahoo Bookmarklets for Firefox, IE, and Safari

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Hack, Web by max on the December 20th, 2006 at 11:40 pm

Today, I was trying to bookmark some stuff on Google and Yahoo and noticed that there weren’t any bookmarklets for them that were available.

They have toolbars but I rather have a simple button to click then do click, scroll, click…

So I hacked one real quick. Now you can just click a button on your browser to save your favorite sites to Google or Yahoo Bookmarks
    In Firefox,

    Click and drag googlethis yahoothis

    http://zedomax.com/image/200612/google-yahoo-bookmarklets.jpg

    In Internet Explorer,

Right click on googlethis yahoothis and choose “Add to Favorites” and add to the “Links” folder.

    In Safari,

Click and drag googlethis yahoothis to your toolbar.

If you are still using IE or Safari, why haven’t you switched over to Firefox?

    Get Firefox NOW!
