There’s only one way to fly

Here is a classic example of mixing old technology with new technology; I cannot imagine why the soldier is sitting on the outside of the Apache.

One thing is for sure, he must be one of the bravest men there, and its dangerous enough being on the inside, let alone sitting on the outside, maybe he popped outside for a smoke!

Its a VERY unconventional way of extracting soldiers out of combat. It usually takes a Brigade Commander (Colonel) or Division Commander (Two Star Gen.) level of approval to do so in training or combat. When I was in Iraq, i think it only happened once...and that was in the conventional Army forces. I have no idea if Special Forces or Delta ever did it, but its definitely a last resort evac.

There was a recent case where two Apache crewmembers were rescued like this. One of those rescued rode the helo like this, and one of the two from the rescue Apache got out and rode outside too. One of those rescued flew inside. I believe there's a video online somewhere, shot from another helo with FLIR.
