DIY - How to make an ant farm!

DIY Ant Farm

Cool, I’ve always wanted to make an ant farm. I remember making one out of some glass jars when I was little but wasn’t really all that successful.
Here’s how to make a luxurious ant farm!

If you don’t want to build an ant farm, you can always check out these ant farms you can buy.

A few weeks ago a friend of mine was reminiscing about their old ant farm and so I decided to make an ant farm and give it to them as a gift.

This ant farm is made from old windows, has a warm LED “sun”, some structures for the ants to play on, and is tricked out with a few laser etched/cut accouterments that hopefully make this more than just any regular ant farm. I like to think of it as a luxury ant farm, or mANTsion.

Laser Etching at Techshop

Laser etched laptop

I decided to run down to Techshop in Menlo Park this evening and get OK’ed on the laser cutter/engravers. There are a few projects coming up that may need some fancy parts. Anyway, I had my old nearly-dead laptop along and decided to make it my first project ever, after the training class. I copied a fractal image that was stored on the laptop’s hard drive and etched the design onto the back of the lid. I probably could have dialed the DPI down a little, the file took an hour to run. Anyway, it looks pretty cool! Thanks to Jim Newton for setting up Techshop so anyone can have access to the best tools (toys)! I keep trying to convince Max to come check it out, maybe this will do the trick…

DIY HACK - How to make a Solar Heater under 50 bucks!

Posted in Consumer, Cool, DoItYourself!, Earth, Educational, Energy, Entertainment, Gadgets, Hack, Projects, Solar by max on the April 26th, 2007 at 11:44 pm

Solar Heater

Here’s a great DIY on how to make a solar heater. Although the one he made is not functional you can probably easily make it functional by adding an inlet pipe and outlet pipe plus a small PC fan. But the theory is very impressive and this thing could be made more efficient with a little bit more work.

Using the same equipment and methods, I determined the outlet temperature to be about 95 degrees - thus a 15 degree temperature differential. Not 110 degrees, but not bad , considering I didn’t even break $50 in materials - most of that being the plexiglas window.

Obviously don’t have the inlet and outlet attached to the garage - figures that the day I finish the furnace, it’s 80 degrees and sunny and it looks like we’re finally done with winter. Dad recommends wiring a pusher fan at the end of the inlet tube to keep the air circulating through the furnace.
