Sandstorms from China hits Korea

Sandstorms from China hits Korea

Sandstorms hitting Korea from China has worsened over the last couple years. A Sandstorm can really make a city quicky sandy like the picture above. I remember living in Korea couple years ago but sandstorms weren’t as bad then. Due to China’s exponential growth of factories, pollution, and what not, Koreans are being killed and slaughtered by the mass sandy pollution.

“There is an increasing possibility that yellow dust will appear some time between Thursday night and Friday,” South Korea’s Meteorological Administration said on its website.

The dust, which originates in the Gobi Desert in China, picks up heavy metals and carcinogens such as dioxin as it passes over Chinese industrial regions, before hitting North and South Korea and Japan, meteorologists say.

Time Table!

Time Table 1

Time Table 2

Wow, check out this Time Table you can use to tell time while you are eating breakfast!

The entire top surface of the Time Table is a digital clock. The glowing digit segments are made of electro-luminescent film, which accounts for the thinness of the structure (6cm). The electronics include an alarm, and a timer to switch the light off at night. Additionally, the light can be turned on, or off anytime without affecting the time.

Virtual Reality Backpack

Check out augmented reality backpack from Tinmith! This seems almost like a physical layer of Second Life.

Welcome to the new Tinmith backpack 2006. As you can see from the images of our previous systems below, the new version is lighter and more robust than ever! We have taken our eight years of experience in the field and built a system using the best components that are currently available. We have designed our own custom housing to make the system robust and ready for use in outdoor conditions.

The whole system weighs 4 kilograms! Battery packs are an additional weight of approximately 2-4 kg depending on operating time and battery technology used. The profile of the system is almost to the point where a large jacket could be worn over the top and conceal the system. Compare this to the weight of previous systems which was over 12 kg on a hiking frame and with less functionality! The following photos show the left side (with ventilation fan and power switch), and right side (with antennas and helmet connector).

DIY - How to build BEAM Vibrobots

BEAM Vibrobots 1

BEAM Vibrobots 2

If you haven’t checked out these funny looking really efficient vibrobots (which sounds funny too), make sure you do. They seems to run primarily on solar power and you can do a lot with it. (hopefully… :P)

In the current issue of MAKE (Vol. 8), I have a piece on Pummers, a type of solar-powered robotic plant life. I’ve known about Pummers for years, but my inspiration for doing the MAKE piece was finding Zach Debord’s gorgeous Pummer set on Flickr. Being an artist and designer, Zach understands the value of making miniature robots that are as beautiful as they are functional. Mark Tilden, the “Big God” of BEAM robotics, has a wonderful adage that a human is a way that a robot makes another robot. One “evolutionary strategy” here is centered on aesthetics. Aesthetics drive interest. The Pummer piece is a prime example. I saw Zach’s bots, I was wowed by their beautiful designs, and wanted others to see them. The piece got published, and now, if you search on Pummer in the MAKE Flickr pool, you see other people are making them. The robots are replicating themselves.

Smalled RFID tags are smaller than human hair!

Smalled RFID tags are smaller than human hair

Check out the new RFID tags that are smaller than human hair from Hitachi Japan!

The minute devices measure just 0.05mm by 0.05mm (0.002×0.002in) and to the naked eye look like spots of powder.

They are thin enough to be embedded in a sheet of paper, Hitachi spokesman Masayuki Takeuchi says.

RFID tags store data about the objects they are attached to, and companies are vying to create increasingly tiny versions.

Recently, Hitachi unveiled another RFID tag, the Mu-chip, which measures 0.4mm by 0.4mm (0.02×0.02in).
