DIY HACK - “Propeller Clock” Mechanically Scanned LED Clock

Posted in Circuits, Consumer, Cool, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, Graphics, Hack, Microcontroller, magic by max on the December 28th, 2006 at 3:11 am

Cool propeller clock you can make!

How this clock works:
A motor spins the “propeller”, and a small microprocessor keeps track of time and changes the pattern on seven LEDs with exact timing to simulate a 7 by 30 array of LEDs. It is an illusion, but it works nicely.

If you want to build this clock, you will need a few things, including:
Skill with motors and mechanical things.
Prior electronic experience.
A dead VCR or floppy drive or other source of a suitable motor and miscellaneous parts.
A programmer that will program a PIC16C84 or 16F84 microprocessor.

Wordpress Theme - Journalist 3-Column Theme 1.1

Posted in Cool, Web, Wordpress by max on the December 28th, 2006 at 1:53 am

http://zedomax.com/download/screenshot.png

Hey we’ve hacked the Journalist theme by Lucian Marin.

I have a sample of an empty blog with the Journalist 3-Column Theme.

It’s basically a stripped down version of our current theme without the
ads and the really cool stuff…hehe…

Anyways, I thought it might help some of you guys out there.

It’s not perfect yet but it is a good 3-Column version of the Journalist
theme
.

I will try to update it in the future if there’s anyone using it… hehe…

Leave comments if you are using it.

Wii HACK - Christmas Wii-remote xmms hack

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Entertainment, Gadgets, Games, Linux, Ubuntu, Video, digg, wii by max on the December 27th, 2006 at 8:26 pm

Cool XMMS hack for linux or ubuntu users using the wii remote!
The funny thing is he doesn’t even own a Wii console, just the Wii remote!
Well, we’d probably give it some good hacks if we just had some Wii remotes too.
Two thumbs up for doing XMMS on Ubuntu!

But I don’t own a Wii console. So I hacked away in linux and got it to control my xmms mp3 player. All buttons except power button work as follows:

Srchr seems to be an awesome search engine as you can customize it to your liking. For example,
you can easily click and drag Google and Yahoo to the main screen and search all at once without
installing any annoying toolbars. Nicely done guys!

Here’s hoverbike, which is basically a mix of a hoverboard and segway.
Actually we have been developing our own too. Well we just got
our prototype started so… we will see about the next Zedomax Hoverbike…

DIY HACK - Etch CNC

Posted in Consumer, Cool, DoItYourself!, Educational, Entertainment, Gadgets, Hack, Microcontroller, Motor by max on the December 27th, 2006 at 12:50 pm

Check out this cool etch CNC.  Actually we were thinking of making this too, but since it’s already
made, we can learn from it and make it quicker.  Awesome! :)

I am using a retrofit machine that fit within my budget. It’s a 2-axis machine with approximately 170×130mm travel.

The circuit board is my own design, using a ULN2803 per motor to supply approx. 0.3 amps per winding. The power supply is a standard AT hard-drive power connector, with the +12V used to power the motors. It’s a simple constant-voltage L/R drive. I made the circuit board using EAGLE, and milled it on Chris’s real CNC milling machine (which is powered by EMC and AXIS, of course).
