DIY Hack - Make your own Fabber!

Posted in Circuits, Consumer, Cool, DoItYourself!, Entertainment, Gadgets, Hack, Industrial, Microcontroller, Motor, Robots by max on the November 25th, 2006 at 11:33 pm

Check out the Fabber wiki for a complete Do-It-Yourself topics on how to make your own fabber.
What is a fabber?

Fabbers make three-dimensional, solid objects that can be used as models, as prototypes, or as delivered products. They are widely used by manufacturers for these purposes. Fabbers use a wide range of techniques to make products from a wide range of materials. The quality of these materials and the precision of fabrication can be a major constraint on functional applications.

Windows XP Running on PS3

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Entertainment, Gadgets, Games, Hack, Linux, Video, ps3 by max on the November 25th, 2006 at 7:52 pm

Someone got Windows XP running on PS3 via emulator via Linux OS. Well, if
we wanted to run windows apps, we’d just rather use wine. But we give a thumbs
up for the news.

DIY - Extra a High Powered Laser out of a Blu Ray DVD Player

Posted in Consumer, Cool, DoItYourself!, Gadgets, Hack by max on the November 25th, 2006 at 4:44 pm

http://zedomax.com/image/200611/wicked_laser.jpg
You gotta check out wickedlasers, they make anywhere from a laser that’s simply
visible to lasers that can melt plastic. In the HackedGadgets article, we can see
how the high powered laser is being extracted from a blue-ray player. In short,
DIYers and hackers will now be able to get hands on one of the more powerful
lasers to be able to be used for their next gizmo.

AirScooter II Ultralight Helicopter for 50Gs!

Posted in Consumer, Cool, Entertainment, Gadgets, Travel, Video by max on the November 25th, 2006 at 8:32 am

http://zedomax.com/image/200611/airscooter.jpg

You gotta check out the supposedly $50,000 personal helicopter. It is now becoming more and
more practically for people to actually own a personal helicopter. The only thing is, it doesn’t look
like it’s too sturdy for any kind of bad wheather. Well, looks are not everything, maybe it will
perform under pressure.  Hackedgadgets have some more cool pictures…

The AirScooter uses a dual coaxial rotor system that eliminates the need for complicated swash plates and greatly simplifies the aircraft’s controls (unlike a traditional helicopter, the AirScooter II uses motorcycle-style handlebars). The design also eliminates foot controls and the tail rotor. The company reports a maximum speed of 55 knots (approximately 60 mph, in keeping with ultralight regulations) and a 2-hour range from the 5 gallon tank. Power is provided by a 65 HP AeroTwin 4-stroke engine.

For those who like the concept of a coaxial rotorcraft but don’t have $50G to burn, the company also makes the AirScoot R/C coaxial rotor hobby model. The complete radio controlled package with 10 cell battery pack sells for $695.

T-ray Camera

Posted in Business, Earth, Educational, Government, Medical by kenji on the November 25th, 2006 at 12:13 am

A fully clothed man imaged by a QinetiQ millimetric wave camera. Note the concealed gun. T-ray cameras are said to be similar but more powerful.

Here’s a little explanation on what a T-Ray exactly is. T-Ray or Terahertz radiation are electromagnetic waves sent at terahertz frequencies which travel in line of sight. These waves can pass through clothes, paper, wood, plastic, and fog. However they cannot penetrate metal or water. Here are some ways it could be used.

Medical - Since Terahertz radiation is non-ionizing it is not expected to damage DNA unlike X-rays. It can also detect differences in water content and density of a tissue.

Security - Nothing to tell that you haven’t figured out for yourself :P

DIY HOWTO - Linux Temperature Monitoring using the DS1820

Posted in Circuits, Cool, DoItYourself!, Hack, Linux, Microcontroller by max on the November 24th, 2006 at 10:37 pm

http://zedomax.com/image/200611/linux_temperature.jpg

Here’s how you can make your own Linux Temperature Monitoring system coupled with a DS1820
chip using the 1-wire communication protocol. Note that you could easily do this with a Basic Stamp,
which supports 1-wire protocol and just simply add a serial LCD.  But if you are a Linux lover like us,
you will want to try this out, maybe using an embedded Linux system like one from Atmel.

Check out STK1000 video and running Doom on STK1000, which is one of the best embedded Linux
platforms out there.  The AVR32, which is the processor for the STK1000, does outrun most ARM
processors.
